The ICOS labelling procedure is now open! At the moment only those stations that are on the Master ICOS Station List have access to the application process. To apply for station labelling please go to the application website: https://meta.icos-cp.eu/labeling/. The evaluation of the first requests from the atmospheric and ecosystem stations has already started. Station PI’s can always contact their respective thematic centres for advice and support in the application procedure. Newly proposed stations and/or changes and updates to existing stations of the Belgian ICOS network (e.g. change of Principal Investigator, station name, class etc.) should be communicated to the National Focal Point (contact information below) who will inform the ICOS Head Office and the Belgian GA

representatives.

The first draft of the cooperation agreement between the national ICOS stations and ICOS ERIC has been prepared. This agreement – called the ICOS ERIC – National Network agreement – has been reviewed by the Monitoring Station Assemblies (MSA) of the ecosystem, atmosphere and ocean networks. It was presented to the GA at their latest meeting on April 15th 2016 in Lund, Sweden. The agreement has to be signed by either the institutions hosting one or more ICOS stations, or by a national ICOS consortium. The agreement will be send to you as part of the meeting material for the ICOS Belgium Consortium Study Day (read about this further in the newsletter). During the Study Day we would very like to welcome your feedback on the agreement.

2016 ICOS Belgium Consortium Study Day As a follow up to our fruitful meeting last year, we will organize a second ICOS Belgium Consortium Study Day on Wednesday May 4th 2016. Once again we invite you to come and give an update of the work realized at your ICOS stations during the past year and together think of ways to strengthen our national network even more the coming years. The Study Day is jointly organized by the University of Liège (prof. dr. Marc Aubinet) and the University of Antwerp (prof. dr. Reinhart Ceulemans, Belgian Focal Point). The meeting will take place at the University of Liège Agro-Bio Tech campus in Gembloux. Just as last year we will end the day with a round table discussion.

Topics for the round table discussion are very welcome and can be send to [email protected].

Upgrading the network The University of Antwerp has recently renewed the cabin for housing instrumentation at the Brasschaat ecosystem station. The new cabin is more spacious and better climate controlled to ensure proper working of the analyzers. Also at the Brasschaat forest, new eddy covariance set ups have been installed at a lower height on the tower to ensure a more accurate footprint. The new sets will run in parallel to the one on top of the tower. Also the soil plot sensors have been installed according to the ICOS protocols.

ICOS Belgium leaflet updated! The leaflet about the Belgian ICOS network has been updated to include the atmospheric and oceanic stations of BIRA and RBINS respectively. The new leaflet is attached to this newsletter. The Belgian, Walloon and Flemish ICOS leaflets can be downloaded from http://www.icos-belgium.be/ and can be ordered via [email protected].

ICOS website The Belgian ICOS website has been recently updated. Have a look at www.icos-belgium.be. News and upcoming events of the ICOS RI are announced on the ICOS RI website www.icos-ri.eu.

The official launch of the Belgian ICOS network took place on Tuesday March 22nd 2016 in the national park de Hoge Kempen in Maasmechelen. Sadly, the event was overshadowed by the attacks in Brussels. The Belgian ICOS community, however, was not discouraged and researchers, university representatives and stakeholders joined the inauguration nevertheless. ICOS Director General Werner Kutsch came all the way from the ICOS Head Office in Helsinki, to officially open the ICOS Belgian network. He subsequently inaugurated the newest ecosystem station operated by the University of Antwerp in Maasmechelen. In his speech, Werner Kutsch emphasized the importance of climate change research at both the European and the global scale. ‘By facilitating long-term measurements of carbon and greenhouse gasses in Europe, ICOS will deliver the invaluable knowledge needed to take effective measures against climate change both at a European and a global scale’ Next Ignace Schops, director of the national park de Hoge Kempen, gave an account of the history of the park, which was celebrating its 10th birthday that same week. We would like to thank all the partners in the Belgian ICOS network for making this ambitious project possible!

The launch event got some coverage in the press despite the terrible events in Brussels. Visit http://www.icos-belgium.be/ to find a number of newspaper articles.
