Siemens’ single-board STM-1 multiplexerSMA1K-CP is setting a new standard ofcompactness and flexibility. The highlevel of integration employed allows forimplementation of a fully functional ter-minal and add/drop multiplexer by a sin-gle laptop-size unit. Having one univer-sal type of network element supportanywhere from 2 Mbit/s to 100BaseTsignals over star, bus and ring topologiesguarantees a maximum of flexibility innetwork planning. The Ethernet interfaces allow the opera-tor to easily connect packet-based datanetworks (e.g., IP networks) in a cost-effective way without having to deployadditional expensive third-party equip-ment (switches or routers)

Due to the ingenious and optimizedhousing concept, SMA1K-CP is suitablefor rack and desktop installation as wellas wall-mounted applications. This highflexibility allows simple and rapid instal-lation in local exchange offices, streetcabinets and at customer premises.

Optical interfaces applicable for alldistances from intra-office to long-hauland the AC/DC converter with batterybackup supplement off its versatility. As is usual for all Siemens TransXpressSDH products, SMA1K-CP complies

with ITU-T and ETSI recommendationsand standards. This ensures operatorflexibility and interworking with existingand future SDH/SONET and IP equip-ment.

Top 10 features

The SMA1K-CP supports a wide rangeof system features to meet networkoperators’ requirements.Key features include:

TransXpress SMA1K-CP in brief

The TransXpress SMA1K-CP multiplexer family is part of a comprehensive

range of SDH products offered by Siemens, the market leader in SDH network-

ing.This new-generation, cost-effective and compact STM-1 multiplexer is

optimized to deliver a low to medium number of 2 Mbit/s and higher bitrate

services (34/45 Mbit/s and 10/100BaseT) to residential and business customers

including offices, business parks and Internet POPs.Thanks to its compactness,

SMA1K-CP is extremely well-suited for installation within cabinets and in

offices at customer premises.

Ethernet-based networks

TransXpress SMA1K-CP combinespacket-switched data interfaces withthe widely implemented and tested reliable and flexible SDH platform. The Ethernet interface allows the opera-tor to easily connect packet-based datanetworks (e.g., IP networks) in a cost-effective way without having do deployadditional expensive third-party equip-ment (e.g., switches or routers).Geographically distributed corporatenetworks can be interconnected in avery cost-effective way using simplebridges (plug and play). These bridgescan be easily connected in pairs throughpoint-to-point links that are transparentfor higher level protocols.TransXpress SMA1K-CP is a very econom-ic way of delivering leased line servicesto interconnect these LAN networksand providing other corporate services(e.g., voice and video), with additionalbenefits such as SDH managementand protection facilities.

Fiber-to-the-Business applications

TransXpress SMA1K-CP also offers ahighly cost-effective way of deliveringleased line service to small and medium-size businesses. In the access network, SMA1K-CP canbe installed at customer premises forfiber-to-the-business applications, enabling either star or ring configurations. The compact and versatile housing issuitable for rack, desktop and wallmounting in customer workplace envi-ronments.The SMA1K-CP also provides smoothand easy network evolution from PDHto SDH/SONET, as well as IP, with theadded benefit of network control throughmanaged SDH solutions.Improved quality and availability of net-work services for the subscriber andreduced operational costs for the networkoperator result in network solutions thatare far superior to existing PDH networks.

Inter-connecting FTTC infrastructuresand wireless base stations

With bandwidth demand out-growingthe capacity available in today’s FTTCand wireless base station interconnec-tions, solutions are needed that can bothcope with size and cost requirementswhile satisfying the continually increasingtraffic volume created by applicationssuch as Internet, teleconferencing, tele-medicine, tele-education and others. The logical step would be to move tothe technology already used in the back-bone of regional transport networks. That technology is SDH and has provenefficient and reliable.

Both FTTC and cellular environment putnew physical demands on SDH equip-ment in terms of compactness andinstallation flexibility. These demandscannot be met by traditional systems.SMA1K-CP was designed for solutionswhere compactness and optimizedfunctionality are especially important.

It is particularly well suited for applica-tions where 2 Mbit/s and higher bitratesignals are distributed from the core toremote access units.

Network termination and access tocore networks

TransXpress SMA1K-CP is fully compat-ible with otherTransXpress productsand can be deployed as an access solu-tion in point-to-point and ring configura-tions.

Besides traditional access to core net-works, SMA1K-CP can be deployed asa network termination node to create a clear definition of each operator’s/customer’s responsibility.

In the event of network fault, extensiveperformance monitoring functionality, for instance, tandem connection moni-toring, guarantee exact QoS measure-ment and rapid identification of thesection or subnetwork in which theerror occurred.

SMA1K is also available with anextended number of 2 Mbit/s ports(dedicated information is available).
