August is one of the most fun times to be on the water. The pressure of the AuSable is gone, the weather is nice, and there are plenty of new

paddlers wanting to dive into the sport.. It is the time that we can give back, and reflect on how our seasons have progressed. On August 20 ,

we can honor deceased paddlers at the Canoers’ Memorial Monument Induction Ceremony, with many beloved Michigan paddlers being rec-

ognized this year. Back to racing, some members have recently returned from the USCA Nationals in Dubuque, IA where Michigan paddlers

placed 2nd in the overall standings. The end of August is marked by the last race on the AuSable for 2017, the Mio “First Dam” Canoe Race.

Mio is the women’s feature event this year, with separate women’s purses for C-1 & C-2, and a special raffle of Susan William’s Activewear!

Youth, Mentor and Old Timers races round out a fun weekend, plus don’t forget the paddle clinic on Saturday afternoon. Our final race and

banquet take place at the Paradise Tahquamenon Wilderness Canoe Race on September 16th– a great event where top paddlers usually

switch from their regular season partners, creating a race full of surprises. After the race, we join together to celebrate at the end of season

Awards Banquet– make sure to submit your nominations today! Don’t forget– the C1 prize raffle– each race entered gives you another

chance to win! This year the MCRA is promoting youth in the sport, with a series of junior and mentor races, plus a 19 & under bonus in the C-

1 races. Not to leave the seasoned paddlers out, we are continuing to promote an age group bonus in races with more than 4 C-1 paddlers

over 70. See you on the water! —Rebecca Davis

Jr.. Bob Proulx, Paul Short, Doug Welch, Larry Cool, Edward Mar-tella III, Bill Martella, Stevey Staples (non-paddler), & Mort Neff (non-paddler).

Classic Innovation! Shawinigan -

The entire team of the Classique internationale de canots de la Mau-

ricie is proud to announce chang-

es to the event's competition

component. The 84th Classique

to be held from September 1 to

September 4, 2017, will be better

than ever. GETTING BETTER EVE-

RY YEAR: IT'S CLASSIC! This

year's competition features new

categories. The 84th edition will

include senior (50 to 60 years)

and veteran (60 years and over)

categories. An accessible chal-

lenge, now that's Classic! REGIS-

TRATION FEES Registration fees

remain the same as last year,

that is to say $250 for K2 and C2

categories. The R9 category remains at $1,200 and the C4 category is

$500. Please visit our Web site, www.classiquedecanots.com, for the

fees modulation based on your registration date. NEW PRIZES This

year's new categories will also feature new prizes. $2,250 in prize

money will be awarded for each of the senior and veteran categories.

Prizes for the mixed and women's teams will be awarded once again

this year. ADAPTED ROUTES AND TAKING CHARGE OF THE ATHLETES

This year's routes will be adapted to each category. Since new catego-

ries were added to the 84th edition, the different aspects of each one

are taken into account. The routes

for each category will be more de-

tailed. The buoys will be easy to

identify. In addition, specifically for

the K2, the Classique will take

charge of the athletes for the entire

weekend (transportation, provi-

sioning team, accommodations and

kayak loan). RULES AND TRAINING

FOR OFFICIALS The rules will be

the same as last year. They will be

streamlined to make them clearer

for the athletes. This year, the offi-

cials will receive specific training on

the competition procedure. The

training will enable the officials to

supervise the paddlers in an exemplary manner. The athletes, our top

priority, it's Classic! From September 1 to 4, the Classique internatio-

nale de canots de la Mauricie will take on the majestic Saint-Maurice

River from La Tuque to Trois-Rivières. Follow us on social media for

upcoming promotions. -
