HIGH-SCORING ‘AVS ADD ANOTHER WEAPON

The Colorado Avalanche quickly responded to the broken hand that will keep team goal-scoring leader Anthony Stewart on the shelf for the next four-to-six weeks. Colorado, the league’s highest-scoring team, dealt rugged blueliner Scott Hannan to the Washington Capitals on Nov. 30 in exchange for 26-year-old forward Tomas Fleischmann.

Fleischmann had emerged as one of the top secondary scorers on a loaded Capitals’ squad, improving his point totals three straight years. Last season he established career highs across the board with 23 goals, 28 assists and 51 points. Colorado head coach Joe Sacco told NHL.com he expects Fleischmann to begin his Avalanche career on the team’s top line with Paul Stastny and Milan Hejduk.

LEIGHTON CLOSE TO RETURNING

The Philadelphia Flyers, tied with the Penguins for first place in the Atlantic Division as of Nov. 30, are on the verge of having a logjam in the crease. Goaltender Michael Leighton, who helped lead the Flyers to the Stanley Cup Final last spring, was sent on a rehabilitation assignment to Adirondack of the American Hockey League on Nov. 30 for a three-game conditioning stint.

Once Leighton plays his three AHL games, the Flyers must decide whether to move him to the active roster. With Leighton missing the first two months following back surgery, rookie Sergei Bobrovsky has taken over the starting reigns, going 12-3-2 with a 2.19 goals-against average. Veteran Brian Boucher is also on the Flyers’ roster.

LEHTONEN CARRIES THE STARS

Knowing that long-time netminder Marty Turco was on the verge of unrestricted free agency, the Dallas Stars made a preemptive strike to combat his potential loss at the trading deadline last March when they swung a deal to acquire 27-year-old netminder Kari Lehtonen from the Atlanta Thrashers.

That move has paid off in a big way for Dallas this season, as Lehtonen’s strong play has carried the Stars to the top of the Western Conference. Always high on talent but often times injured during parts of five seasons with Atlanta, the former 2002 No. 2-overall Entry Draft selection has starred for Dallas during the first months of the 2010-11 season. Through his first 20 appearances, Lehtonen posted a 12-7-1 record, 2.61 goals-against average and .914 save percentage as Dallas sat in first place in the Pacific Division as of Nov. 30.

RONRONRON BURKLE BURKLE BURKLE

MARIOMARIOMARIO LEMIEUX LEMIEUX LEMIEUX

Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world.Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in

retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins.

Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal.

Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less.

Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

Mario Lemieux will always be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable business career came this season — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s

new multi-purpose entertainment venue.Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and co-

owner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise. The Penguins have been named No. 1 in Fan Relations by ESPN the Magazine, sold out a team-record 166 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits.

Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to two Stanley Cups.

A gifted centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points.

In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org.

Mario, his wife Nathalie and their four children live in Sewickley.

DAVIDDAVIDDAVID MOREHOUSE MOREHOUSE MOREHOUSEPittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the

Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center.Morehouse had served as team president since 2007,

overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs.

Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine.

As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic.

Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

JASONJASONJASON BOTTERILL BOTTERILL BOTTERILL

Ray Shero, 48, was named GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins on May 25, 2006.

His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the

playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09.

One of his first acts as GM was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization.

Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators.

Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office.

The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group.

Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockey-

related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League.

Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins. Before joining Pittsburgh, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars.

Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo.

In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009,

Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season.

Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim.

Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh.

He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.

Tony Granato, 46, begins his second season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw

the NHL’s ninth-ranked penalty killing group with an 84.1-percent success rate, and second best on the road at 85.3 percent.

Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 215-104-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003.

Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers, Los Angeles and San Jose. In 1997, he was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He appeared in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993.

Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary.

Tony and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children and reside in the South Hills.

Todd Reirden, 39, joined Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL defenseman

for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen.Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 2009-

10, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs.

Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green.

coach/consultant during much of that time. He was also part of the staff when the Penguins won Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992.

A native of Montreal, Quebec, Meloche spent 18 seasons as an NHL goaltender with Chicago, California, Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh. He played the final three seasons of his career in Pittsburgh following a 1985 trade.

Meloche appeared in 788 NHL games during his career, posting a record of 270-351-131 with a 3.64 goals-against average. In 45 career playoff games, he posted a 21-19 record and a 3.48 goals-against average.

CONSOL Energy Center opened in August, 2010 as Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue — home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins as well as other professional and collegiate sports, concerts, children’s shows, skating shows and more.

It replaces the old Civic Arena/Mellon Arena, which had operated since 1961 and was home of the Penguins from their inception in 1967. It was the oldest arena in the National Hockey League.

“CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins,” said David Morehouse, CEO of the hockey team. “With open concourses, comfortable seating, cutting-edge technology, a state-of-the-art scoreboard and sound system, and an extensive array of food and beverage options, it is a spectacular symbol for the Pittsburgh of the 21st century.”

CONSOL Energy Center was completed on time and under budget, thanks to the combined efforts of architectural firms Populous and Astorino; the owner’s representative, ICON; the construction company, PJ Dick/Hunt; and the excellent construction workers and skilled trade workers of Western Pennsylvania.

The new arena seats 18,087 for hockey, 19,000 for basketball and almost 20,000 for concerts. It is a green building and is the first NHL arena to attain LEED Gold certification.

Even before its doors had opened, CONSOL Energy Center landed commitments from shows that would have bypassed the old arena — the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament first and second rounds, the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, and back-to-back concerts by music legend Paul McCartney.

McCartney, who first played Pittsburgh with the Beatles in 1964 but hadn’t performed here since 1990, christened the new arena with a grand opening concert on August 18, 2010.

In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years.

A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others.

The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.

THE SERIESTonight the Penguins and New Jersey Devils meet for the second time this season and

the first time ever at CONSOL Energy Center . Pittsburgh earned a 3-1 victory in New Jersey on Oct . 11, its first victory of the season, as Alex Goligoski, Mark Letestu and Paul Martin scored goals and Brent Johnson stopped 30 shots . Martin, a former Devil, scored into an empty net to seal the victory . . . Patrick Elias had the only New Jersey goal . . . That victory snapped a six-game losing streak to the Devils, who swept last season’s series . It stands as the only season in which Pittsburgh failed to win a single game against New Jersey . . . Zach Parise, who led the Devils in scoring against the Penguins last season with three goals and nine points, remains out of the New Jersey lineup after knee surgery . . . While losing six of their last seven games to New Jersey, the Penguins have scored only eight goals . Pittsburgh has been held to two or fewer goals in 10 of its last 14 games against the Devils . . . THE PENGUINS

The Penguins took a seven-game winning streak, the NHL’s longest current streak at that point, into their home game here last Thursday against the Atlanta Thrashers, matching the fifth-longest in team history . They had compiled two eight-game winning streaks, most recently from Dec . 23-Jan . 10 during the 2007-08 season, and had a 10-game win streak Jan . 28-Feb . 15, 1999 . Their team record is also the NHL record, 17 straight, from March 9-April 10, 1993 . . . Sidney Crosby extended his scoring streak to 13 games (12+14), his second-longest ever, with an assist in the Penguins’ 3-1 road win over the New York Rangers one week ago . Crosby had points in 19 straight games (11+19) from Oct . 6-Nov . 17, 2007 . . . Pittsburgh was 9-0-1 in its last 10 games and had points in 11 of its last 12 (10-1-1) before facing the Thrashers . . . Kris Letang had three assists, including his 100th NHL point, in a 4-1 home win over Calgary here Nov . 27 . . . Marc-Andre Fleury was 8-0-1 in his last nine decisions, with a 1 .64 goals-against average and .943 save percentage, heading into the Thrashers game . He had stopped 112 of the last 114 shots he faced and had allowed two goals in a 213:13 . . . The Penguins had killed 32 straight penalties and 37 straight road penalties before hosting Atlanta and then playing in Columbus this past Saturday . By going nine games without allowing a power-play goal, Pittsburgh had matched the longest such team streak in the last 13 years . . . The Penguins had won five straight road games heading into the game in Columbus, two shy of the team record matched at the start of last season .

Kris Letang recorded his 100th point in the Penguins’ 4-1 win over Calgary on Nov . 27 .

After tonight’s game, the Devils will play Friday in Ottawa and then return home to play seven of their next nine games . . . Through its first 24 games, New Jersey was averaging a league-low 1 .79 goals per game . The Devils’ power play was ranked 29th at 9 .9 percent . . . Ilya Kovalchuk had just four goals in his first 23 games, while veteran Jason Arnott led the team with eight . Kovalchuk was also minus-11 at that point . . . 2010 PITTSBURGH PENGUINS CHARITY ORNAMENT AUCTION

During select November and December home games, the Pittsburgh Penguins

Booster Club sold holiday ornaments for the benefit of the Autism Society of

Pittsburgh.  The ornaments were handcrafted by artisans at Wendell August Forge

and each set includes three icicle ornaments, tied with a festive red ribbon and

nestled in a custom box.

A limited number of ornament sets were also cast in bronze or copper and each set

individually numbered, then autographed by Penguins players, coaches, and Penguins

great — Mario Lemieux.  These beautiful

bronze and copper ornaments were created

especially for online auction and our friends

at Wendell August Forge donated the

set up and die creation to ensure that the

Autism Society of Pittsburgh would receive

the largest donation possible.  Because of

Wendell August Forge’s generosity and our

outstanding fan base, we know that this

auction will be a huge success.

The auction can be found through the

Penguins website and will end at noon on

Friday, December 10.  Thank you and happy

bidding from the Pittsburgh Penguins and the

Penguins Booster Club.

On Sunday, October 10, sixteen youth hockey teams from the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) in the Squirt age group (age 9 - 10) participated in a shootout competition at CONSOL Energy Center. The event was videotaped to be shown in episodes at Penguins home games.

The first round of competition featured heats between two teams striving to advance to the next round. Sixteen teams fielded five skaters shooting against the opposing team’s goalie.

After each team competition, an individual shooter and goaltender squared off against the opposing team’s individual tandem for a one-on-one competition. Each winning team and pair of individuals advanced to the next round of eight teams/tandems.

The format repeated as teams and individual pairs advanced through the quarter-final heats to move on to the semi-finals.

Robust competition marked the semi-final round for teams and individual tandems. The remaining two teams and individual tandems then had to “leave it all on the ice” in vying for the championship.

Early in the second intermission of each Penguins home game the various heats in the competition will be featured. Enjoy each episode.

There are certain types of hockey players that reporters are drawn to. Usually those players share some common traits:

J They are insightful.

J They are honest.

J They are willing to be insightful and honest in times both good and bad.

For whatever reason I’ve found defensemen to be players to whom I’m most drawn — maybe because they were my favorite childhood players, perhaps because I played the position in pickup games, and probably because they generally seem happy to share stories with the so-called stinkin’ media.

Despite my affection for defensemen, I wasn’t sure about Paul Martin when I first met him during training camp. He struck me as at the very least shy, maybe even standoffish. I had high hopes for him based off reports from former New Jersey teammate Mike Rupp, who had described Martin as “one of the all-time great guys.”

Well, I didn’t get that feeling during the opening days of training camp in September. Don’t get me wrong; Martin wasn’t a bad guy, but he certainly didn’t strike me as a guy who in a few months would be helping me craft a list of the top-five musical acts to play Madison Square Garden over the last decade.

Yes, that was the conversation Martin and I before the Penguins’ first game this season at “the world’s most popular arena.” Tops on his list: Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood, and I have to take his word for it since he actually saw those two rock legends play the Garden.

“I’m into the older acts,” Martin said.Turns out, Martin is an older act, at least in spirit.By the end of Week Two of camp he and I were talking every day, very rarely about

hockey-related matters. This is part of the way I “work the room,” a term beat reporters

commonly use but one that means something different to everybody.

To me “work the room” means building relationships with players, and the way I go about this is to chat with them when I don’t need a quote for a story. Basically, I try to treat them like somebody I would see in any other work setting. Mine is a hockey dressing room, and if I only talked to players when I needed something they probably wouldn’t be all that helpful in those moments.

Once Martin and I got to talking it became pretty clear to me that the hang-up was of my own doing. I had presumed Martin’s soft-spoken ways meant he wasn’t a fan of chit-chatting. Actually, in addition to being one of the more insightful players regarding subtle details of the sport, he also is a great guy to kick around a topic with.

The first one we kicked around was traffic patterns in Pittsburgh, and his difficulty with navigating the city’s many one-way roads. I offered some advice (higher a driver) that he laughed off, and pretty soon we were speaking almost daily about nothing in particular.

Martin morphed into a go-to guy for me after games, somebody I could count on to speak when the room had cleared. The days I had enough content from other players, Martin and I still had brief conversations on topics ranging from his youth hockey days in Minnesota to Italian restaurants in New Jersey.

Still, despite clicking as reporter-player relationships can, there was one topic I had to discuss with Martin that had me concerned. For my Sunday column on the Trib’s “Hockey Day in Pittsburgh” page I wanted to write about Martin being probably the softest-spoken athlete I’ve been around in 15-plus years as a sports reporter.

I broached the idea with him after a Saturday afternoon win against Calgary, bracing for him to take it the wrong way.

Once again I had presumed incorrectly regarding Martin. “I get that all the time,” he said of his soft-speaker reputation. “I’ve never been that

loud of a person.”I wondered if he could be loud — like, say, if his life depended on it.“Right, right, right,” Martin said, smiling while mock raising his voice with each

repeating of that word.Again, I’ll take his word for it.

To say the Penguins were on the brink of elimination heading into Game Six of the 1999 Eastern Conference quarterfinals series would have been a bit of an understatement.

Yes, the Penguins were heading home to enjoy home-ice advantage, and yes, captain Jaromir Jagr was expected to return to the lineup for the first time since Game One after missing the previous four contests with a groin injury.

But the Penguins had lost two straight games in the series to fall behind, 3-2, after finding a way to take a 2-1 series lead early without their leader. Factor in that Jagr was far from 100 percent, and it seemed inevitable that the Devils would find a way to close out the Penguins in the postseason for the second time in five seasons.

However, New Jersey couldn’t take advantage of everything seemingly falling their way, as they allowed a hobbled Jagr to score late in regulation and during the overtime period to lead the Penguins to a dramatic 3-2 come-from-behind victory that evened the series at 3-3.

New Jersey’s chances of eliminating the Penguins got off to a quick start when Devils forward Sergei Brylin notched his third goal of the series just past the midway portion of the opening period.

Martin Straka, who had carried the Penguins on his back offensively during Jagr’s absence, evened the score at 1-1 6:44 into the second period when he one-timed an Alexei Kovalev pass behind Martin Brodeur from the top of the crease.

That’s the way the score remained through the remainder of the middle frame and early into the third period. However, New Jersey was able to take advantage of a power play 4:34 into the final period, as Jason Arnott’s slap shot was deflected first by a Penguin and then off the shin pad of Scott Niedermayer to give the Devils the 2-1 advantage.

Just when it looked like New Jersey would escape, Captain Courageous — Jagr — sent the game into overtime by jamming home a German Titov rebound from the side of the net.

As if that goal wasn’t enough to bolster Jagr’s big-game reputation, he made sure to cement his status as one of the franchise’s all-time clutch performers in overtime.

Almost nearing the halfway mark in overtime, Straka beat Niedermayer to a loose puck on the near boards. Straka skated the biscuit to the bottom of the near circle, where he fed a perfect cross-ice pass to Jagr on the other side of the cage. Jagr took care of business from there, tossing a shot past Brodeur to give the Penguins the dramatic 3-2 overtime defeat.

Two days later the Penguins finished off the Devils, 4-2, in Game Seven.

Penguins fans seem to know exactly when a player needs support.

Certainly, there are times throughout the grueling 82-game schedule when a hockey

player finds himself in a bit of a slump. Marc-Andre Fleury was in one of those little funks at

the beginning of the 2010-11 season, opening the year with just a 1-6 record.

Fleury’s luck quickly changed with one simple chant by Penguins fans.

Prior to the team’s Nov. 12 tilt with the Tampa Bay Lightning, the crowd gave Fleury a

vote of confidence when he was announced as the starting goaltender.

Chants of “Fleury! Fleury!” rained down on the ice, and more cheers for the netminder

echoed through the bowl of CONSOL Energy Center shortly after the puck dropped.

“That was awesome,” Fleury said after the game. “The crowd tonight was behind me

right at the start cheering. It was a good feeling.”

“It was pretty cool what [the fans] did for him at the start of the game,” Maxime Talbot

said. “I’m sure that gave him a little extra jump when they were screaming his name.”

“FLEURY! FLEURY!” RAINED DOWN ON THE ICE. . .

The fans on Nov. 12 showed tremendous support for Marc-Andre Fleury by chanting his name at the beginning of the game.

By the end of the month, Fleury would notch eight wins, one overtime loss, and —

perhaps the most impressive stat — zero regulation losses to earn the Penguins 17

valuable points in the standings — giving the team the second-most (tied) points in the

National Hockey League as of Nov. 30.

“Physically, I don’t feel different [from the beginning of the season],” Fleury said. “I still

feel the same way that I did. But I’m just a little more relaxed and confident.”

That first win of this stretch against the Lightning was his 150th victory, making the

26-year-old netminder the seventh-youngest goalie to ever hit that milestone.

During his hot stretch, Fleury posted a .944 save percentage and a goals against

average of 1.64. For comparison’s sake, Buffalo’s Ryan Miller put up a .929 save

percentage and a 2.22 GAA last season when he won the Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s

best goaltender.

“Flower is playing well,” Paul Martin said. “He has that edge and he’s playing with it.

Fleury’s victory over Tampa Bay on Nov. 12 was the 150th win of his NHL career, making him the seventh-youngest goalie to ever hit that milestone.

It’s always fun to see that he’s having fun and enjoying the game. We need that and he’s

providing it.”

“Part of Flower and his game is that confidence level,” head coach Dan Bylsma said.

“Early in the year, he’s a serious competitor and a big competitor for our team, and not

getting the results the team wanted affected him. But to see him play games in a row, to

see him be confident, to see a little bit of the smirk and the smile underneath the mask

in practice voices to us where he’s at.”

Fleury has regained enough confidence to start letting loose and having a little fun

in practice.

Last month, the Penguins were practicing at Southpointe on a Sunday — a day that

always draws a large crowd. During the team’s shootout contest at the conclusion of

practice, Fleury performed tricks and stunts while stoning the rest of the team on shots —

including push-ups, spin-o-ramas, squats and windmills.

“I just had some fun with the guys,” Fleury said. “It was a big crowd there. They

always cheer when [the skaters] score goals, so I tried to make them cheer for the goalie

this time.”

That confidence is contagious, and the rest of the Penguins lineup seems to be

following Fleury’s lead as the team finished the month of November on a 9-0-1

unbeaten streak.

“Now [Fleury] is back to himself,” Talbot said. “I think it gets everybody around him

better, because we’re like, ‘Okay, Flower’s there,’ and that’s awesome.”

“It feels good to get some wins,” Fleury said. “I just have to keep it going.”

Max Talbot is excited that Fleury is back to himself, it helps to get everyone around him better.

THANKSGIVINGTHANKSGIVINGTHANKSGIVING CLASSIC CLASSIC CLASSICThe Penguins Elite Girls’ teams cruised through

the Thanksgiving Classic Girls’ Hockey Tournament, with the five participating teams capturing three championships during the Thanksgiving tournament, which was held in Pittsburgh.

Of the teams the Penguins fielded, the U12’s, U14’s and U16’s each won their bracket and staked claim as champion to one of the largest girls’ tournaments in the U.S. or Canada. The Thanksgiving Classic hosted 97 teams and allowed over 1,000 girls to compete in 12 divisions. Teams traveled from as far as Ottawa, Nashville and St. Louis to participate.

Perhaps the biggest win for the girls’ teams came from the U14 squad which won the tournament for the first time. After round robin play, the U14’s faced a daunting final against Ontario’s Bluewater Hawks. Aside from being ranked No. 5 in Canada and boasting a 19-2-2 record, the Hawks outscored the U14’s 10-0 in their two previous matchups. However, the Penguins fought through overtime to beat the Canadian powerhouse in a shootout to earn their first championship.

“The girls gave 150 percent every shift,” said Kathy Pippy, manager of the girls’ elite teams. “They’ve struggled this year getting it together, but it looks like they’ve turned things around in a big way at the right time. The 14’s are coming together to be the team we know they can be.”

Also capturing championship banners were the U12’s, who won their second title going 5-0 for the weekend and pulling out a shootout victory against Ontario’s Sudbury Wolves, who were previously undefeated.

Also defending its title was the U16 team who rode the backs of terrific goaltender play by Jenny Wisniewski and Lisa Roberts. The pair allowed four goals in five games to help the team claim its third straight title after defeating Ottawa’s Rideau St. Laurent, 2-1.

Although two teams didn’t win their brackets, each had an excellent outing. The U10’s reached the semifinals and continued improving as they have all year. In a heartbreaking loss, the U10’s battled Ontario’s Belleville Bearcats to a 0-0 deadlock until, with only nine seconds remaining in overtime, Belleville netted the game winner.

The U19’s faced a similar snag when they met Boston’s East Coast Wizards in the final. Though the girls skated tough and fought all game, the loaded Wizards proved to be too much, winning the championship game, 5-1, leaving the Penguins as the runner-up.

“We’re so proud about how the girls played, win or lose,” Pippy said. “I can honestly say, this is the best our teams have ever done and the girls should know this and be very proud of their accomplishments.”

It’ll be as much of a confrontation as it is a celebration. The presence of Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin at the Bridgestone NHL Winter

Classic will see to that.“Nobody really wants to turn it into two individuals,”

observed the NHL Network’s Brian Duff, “but how can you not?”

Now that the calendar has turned from November to December, it’s seemingly become much easier to begin counting down in earnest to the Jan. 1 collision between the Penguins and the Capitals — between Crosby and Ovechkin — at Heinz Field.

Duff, the co-host of the NHL Network’s nightly “NHL on the Fly,” has been doing that since July, when he journeyed to Pittsburgh to check out firsthand how the home of the NHL’s Penguins would be aligned for what has quickly become one of the NHL’s showcase regular-season events.

Duff was so excited then he could barely contain himself while anticipating the next “Crosby vs. Ovechkin” installment.

A sampling of Duff’s take: “Talking to [Capitals General Manager] George McPhee, to [Penguins General Manager]

Ray Shero, to Mario Lemieux, who’s lived the pressure of having to step up against a Wayne Gretzky, limited opportunities, I know, but Mario knows what it’s like. To hear them talk so highly of how even this far into their careers, how they can still find a way to ramp it up in the head-to-head games.

“You just go back to [the 2009-10] regular season, in four head-to-head games Ovechkin had 10 points, seven goals, Crosby scored four times [seven points], both of them scored in shootouts. And yeah, Washington swept the season series, but Pittsburgh was right there, lost in a shootout and lost in overtime. So it easily could have been a saw-off, two games apiece. And that was on the heels of what is still one of the most memorable seven-game series we’ve seen in recent NHL history, so bring it on.

“I only wish they were in the same division so they would play a little more often. I can’t

wait to see this year’s meeting. I don’t know how one of them doesn’t emerge as the star on New Year’s Day.”

Duff is likewise enamored with the Winter Classic’s 2011 setting. “As a hockey guy at heart I’ve enjoyed every one of the Winter Classics and I’m thrilled to

see it back in a football stadium,” he said. “I love Fenway and I love Wrigley; I don’t know how many times you can do the historic route when it comes to venues for this.

“It looks like a natural at Heinz.” The Winter Classic began as a shot in the dark the league first fired in 2008 when the

Penguins played the Sabres at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y.Since then it’s been hosted by Chicago’s Wrigley Field (Blackhawks-Red Wings, 2009)

and Boston’s Fenway Park (Bruins-Flyers, 2010).Duff doesn’t see the momentum generated by the first three such events fading

any time soon. “Maybe I’m speaking on behalf of a lot of Canadians that I deal with on a regular basis, I

think there’s still a fear for some of them, has the NHL gotten to the point where it’s going to kill the golden goose?” he said. “Can you do this every year? Will it lose its luster? Will it become just a bit of a novelty but not a must-see?

“I think of it the opposite. I really think that somehow, some way, and I say that in comparison to when I grew up watching sports and what I expected to see on television on New Year’s Day, I think I’ve seen a league take advantage of a window that was barely open and they just rammed right through. And I think with the star power, because youth is serving the NHL so well right now, I would expect that you’re going to be able to push this continually forward.

“Every sport goes through ebbs and flows where maybe the product isn’t at its peak. But I think because you’ve established yourself as kind of an attention-grabber on New Year’s Day, I think we’re seeing this forever and a day, really.

“I don’t know why they would ever turn away from it.”

On January 1, 2008, in a game for the ages at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, NY, the Penguins and Sabres took to the great outdoors … and the NHL Winter Classic was born. A National Hockey League attendance record setting crowd of 71,217 witnessed as the Penguins prevailed, 2-1. Sidney Crosby’s shootout-winner amid the snowfall turned the final page on the game’s storybook ending.

The success of the 2008 NHL Winter Classic led to it becoming an annual event played on New Year’s Day in a different NHL city. Here’s a summary of the matchups and locations for each game.

SAULT STE. MARIE, ONTARIO

What was it like growing up in Sault Ste. Marie? It’s a good town. It’s a small town, but they’re really hockey-oriented. We have all four seasons, which is nice. When it’s winter, it’s really cold. In the summer, it’s pretty hot. So it’s nice, with a good mixture of everything.

Where did you and you’re friends hang out? Usually around the hockey rinks or ice fishing. We were always outside. There are a lot of things to do outside.

What was your favorite restaurant? I would say Giovanni’s. It’s a little Italian restaurant. We have a lot of Italians up in the Sault. It’s pretty good food.

What’s something that most people don’t know about Sault Ste. Marie? Some people think there’s nothing to do up there, but there’s a lot of outdoor activities. If you really look at it, there are a lot of things to do. Lots of sightseeing, snowmobiling, ice fishing. During the summer, we go four wheeling and stuff like that.

Defenseman Alex Goligoski summed up the Penguins’ November hot streak thusly: “It’s

crazy, when you do the right things, how they work out.”

Part sarcasm, part relief, all reality. The Penguins finished November with seven straight

victories, capping the month with a 3-1 conquest of the New York Rangers on Nov. 29 at

Madison Square Garden. Goligoski dished an assist and was plus-1.

The win also continued a run which saw the high-octane Penguins show that they can

play close to the vest and still get the job done. Prior to the triumph at MSG, the Penguins

had beaten Calgary 4-1, Ottawa 2-1 and Buffalo 1-0.

Goligoski provided the winning goal vs. Ottawa, sinking a power-play wrist shot 5:05 into

the third period to break a 1-1 deadlock.

“The first part of the season, we won a few games, but we were leaving Flower

[goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury] out to dry,” Goligoski said after beating the Senators. “We

were giving up a lot of two-on-

ones. But the last 10 games, we’ve

really cut down on that. We’ve

played more percentage hockey.”

Goligoski, 25, played solid

hockey the first two months of

the season. He had five goals and

eight assists in 26 games, going

plus-7 in the process. Goligoski

had three power-play goals and

five man-advantage assists.

The Penguins’ power play

proved a maddening process

throughout October and

November. Often sputtering

despite a plethora of talent, the

Penguins’ PP went a respectable

6-for-19 during the team’s seven

straight wins.

As November became

December, the Penguins’ power

play ranked 16th in the NHL with a

conversion percentage of 16.2.

Alex Goligoski has played solid hockey so far this season recording three power-play

“We seem to be kind of streaky,” said Goligoski, who saw action with both the first and

second PP. “When things are going good, they’re usually going really good. We need

to keep the same attitude. Right now we’re attacking, we’re winning battles and we’re

getting pucks to the net. That’s how we have to play to be successful.”

Goligoski rifled home a pretty PPG to beat Ottawa.

“I was kind of waiting for their defenseman to move out of the way and take away a

passing lane. I waited and waited,” explained the Minnesota product. “Finally, he came

at me, so I put it short-side. Piping one in.”

Goligoski, a Minnesota native and a product of the University of Minnesota, is one of

several Penguins defensemen that

display offensive flair. That many

isn’t too many — as long as Goligoski

and teammates like Kris Letang and

Paul Martin are judicious in picking

their spots.

“We’re all pretty responsible,”

Goligoski said. “As long as you’re

responsible, it shouldn’t really matter.

It’s trying not to force things. Let the

play come to you.”

Goligoski is in his second full NHL

season. He played 45 games (and

two playoff contests) during the

Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup-winning

campaign. The 6-foot, 178-pounder

arrived in Pittsburgh to stay last

season, collecting eight goals and 29

assists in 69 games. Goligoski had a

red-hot postseason, racking up two

goals and seven assists in 13 Stanley

Cup tilts.

Playoff success is nothing new to Goligoski: He got four goals and 24 assists in 23

games as the Penguins’ Wilkes-Barre/Scranton farm team made it to the American

Hockey League Final in 2008. Goligoski’s 28 points ranked him second in Calder Cup

scoring and were the most ever posted by a defenseman in that competition.

Goligoski was satisfied with his play through October and November. But he’s still

hoping for improvement.

“I feel good,” Goligoski said. “Things are going great right now for our team. But you

can always get better. I’m definitely looking forward to that. Every game is different. But

you try to go out and play the same game every night.”

Mark Madden hosts a radio show 3-6 p.m. weekdays on WXDX-FM (105.9).

continued from page 139

On Nov. 26, Goligoski scored a power-play goal at 5:05 of the third period to break a 1-1 deadlock against Ottawa.
