CONSOL ENERGY1

THE PRICE IS RIGHTThe Montreal Canadiens were faced with a

difficult decision over the summer. Due to the salary cap, the team had to decide between former first-round draft pick Carey Price or playoff sensation Jaroslav Halak as their No. 1 netminder heading into the 2010-11 season. Montreal went with Price, dealing Halak to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for a package of prospects.

As great as Halak has played for the Blues through the early going, it appears as though Montreal’s gamble in Price has paid

off. Price, who started 16 of Montreal’s first 17 games, ranked third in the National Hockey League as of Nov. 15 with 10 wins, while ranking in the top-10 in goals-against average (2.18) and save percentage (.923). He was rewarded for his outstanding play by being named the NHL’s No. 1 star for the week ending Nov. 14.

ADDING TO THE COREWith 26 points through the first 18 games of the

season — the second-highest total in the NHL as of Nov. 15 — the Philadelphia Flyers have established themselves as one of the league’s top Stanley Cup contenders. So it should come as no surprise that Philadelphia general manager Paul Holmgren has been busy trying to keep his team together.

Just days after inking Claude Giroux to a three-year deal, he took another step towards maintaining his core by locking up center Jeff Carter to an 11-year contract. Carter, the first of Philadelphia’s two first-round draft picks (11th overall) in 2003, joins Giroux, captain Mike Richards and defenseman Chris Pronger in signing long-term deals with the team over the past year.

BACK WITH A BANGThe fact that the New York Rangers have spent

much of the early season at the top of the Eastern Conference standings is amazing when you

consider they have played much of the year without the services of three of their top forwards — sniper Marian Gaborik, all-around center Chris Drury and playmaking pivot Vinny Prospal.

While the latter two continued to miss time, Gaborik returned to the lineup with a bang. In just his second game back, Gaborik lit up the Edmonton Oilers for three goals and one assist in an 8-2 thrashing at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 14. That was a welcomed sight for New York which, despite its record, missed the Slovak star, who last season tied a career high by scoring 42 goals during his first season with the Rangers.

RONRONRON BURKLE BURKLE BURKLE

MARIOMARIOMARIO LEMIEUX LEMIEUX LEMIEUX

Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world.Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in

retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins.

Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal.

Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less.

Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

Mario Lemieux will always be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable business career came this season — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s

new multi-purpose entertainment venue.Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and co-

owner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise. The Penguins have been named No. 1 in Fan Relations by ESPN the Magazine, sold out a team-record 166 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits.

Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to two Stanley Cups.

A gifted centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points.

In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org.

Mario, his wife Nathalie and their four children live in Sewickley.

DAVIDDAVIDDAVID MOREHOUSE MOREHOUSE MOREHOUSEPittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the

Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center.Morehouse had served as team president since 2007,

overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs.

Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine.

As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic.

Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

JASONJASONJASON BOTTERILL BOTTERILL BOTTERILL

Ray Shero, 48, was named GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins on May 25, 2006.

His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the

playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09.

One of his first acts as GM was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization.

Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators.

Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office.

The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group.

Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockey-

related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League.

Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins. Before joining Pittsburgh, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars.

Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo.

A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan, where he earned his MBA, and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996, helping his team win gold medals in all three tournaments.

He resides in Pittsburgh along with his wife, Andrea.

In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009,

Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season.

Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim.

Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh.

He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.

Tony Granato, 46, begins his second season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw

the NHL’s ninth-ranked penalty killing group with an 84.1-percent success rate, and second best on the road at 85.3 percent.

Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 215-104-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003.

Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers, Los Angeles and San Jose. In 1997, he was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He appeared in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993.

Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary.

Tony and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children and reside in the South Hills.

Todd Reirden, 39, joined Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL defenseman

for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen.Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 2009-

10, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs.

Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green.

coach/consultant during much of that time. He was also part of the staff when the Penguins won Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992.

A native of Montreal, Quebec, Meloche spent 18 seasons as an NHL goaltender with Chicago, California, Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh. He played the final three seasons of his career in Pittsburgh following a 1985 trade.

Meloche appeared in 788 NHL games during his career, posting a record of 270-351-131 with a 3.64 goals-against average. In 45 career playoff games, he posted a 21-19 record and a 3.48 goals-against average.

Gilles and his wife, Sophie, reside in Pittsburgh. His son, Eric, is a pro player who was a member of the Penguins organization from 2000-04.

CONSOL Energy Center opened in August, 2010 as Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue — home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins as well as other professional and collegiate sports, concerts, children’s shows, skating shows and more.

It replaces the old Civic Arena/Mellon Arena, which had operated since 1961 and was home of the Penguins from their inception in 1967. It was the oldest arena in the National Hockey League.

“CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins,” said David Morehouse, CEO of the hockey team. “With open concourses, comfortable seating, cutting-edge technology, a state-of-the-art scoreboard and sound system, and an extensive array of food and beverage options, it is a spectacular symbol for the Pittsburgh of the 21st century.”

CONSOL Energy Center was completed on time and under budget, thanks to the combined efforts of architectural firms Populous and Astorino; the owner’s representative, ICON; the construction company, PJ Dick/Hunt; and the excellent construction workers and skilled trade workers of Western Pennsylvania.

The new arena seats 18,087 for hockey, 19,000 for basketball and almost 20,000 for concerts. It is a green building and is the first NHL arena to attain LEED Gold certification.

Even before its doors had opened, CONSOL Energy Center landed commitments from shows that would have bypassed the old arena — the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament first and second rounds, the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, and back-to-back concerts by music legend Paul McCartney.

McCartney, who first played Pittsburgh with the Beatles in 1964 but hadn’t performed here since 1990, christened the new arena with a grand opening concert on August 18, 2010.

In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years.

A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others.

The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.

snapped a three-

game losing streak

against Carolina . . .

Pittsburgh has won only two of its last seven games against the Hurricanes (2-2-3),

although each of those five losses has been by a single goal . The last time Carolina beat

Pittsburgh by more than a goal was Feb . 14, 2008, a 4-2 Hurricanes’ home victory . . . The

Penguins have not scored more than three goals in any of their last seven games against

Carolina . The last time they did so was in a 5-2 road win Dec . 4, 2008 . . . Four of the last

six games between the teams have gone past regulation, with Carolina winning three of

those — all in overtime . . . Pittsburgh has lost three straight home games to the Hurricanes

and hasn’t beaten them here at home since a 4-1 win Oct . 23, 2008 . Pittsburgh is 4-5-1

in its last 10 home games against the Hurricanes and has scored the first goal only twice

in that span . . . The Penguins have held the Hurricanes to three or fewer goals in seven

straight games played here in Pittsburgh . . . While winning three of the four games played

between the teams last season, Carolina was led in scoring by Ray Whitney, who had four

goals and seven points . He signed with Phoenix this summer . . . Evgeni Malkin (2+2) and

Dupuis (0+4) led the Penguins in scoring . Dupuis thus has six points in his last five games

against Carolina . . . The teams’ next game is here Jan . 22 . . . The Penguins are 52-47-11-5

all-time against the Hartford/Carolina franchise, including a 27-22-6-1 mark at home .

THE HURRICANESCarolina hosted Ottawa on Wednesday

night and will return home after this game to face Nashville tomorrow night and Washington next Wednesday . The Hurricanes are in a stretch where they play five of eight games at home . . . One thing Carolina is trying to fix is its defensive game; headed into Wednesday’s game against Ottawa, the Canes had allowed 15 goals in their last two games, an 8-1 home loss to Philadelphia and a 7-2 loss in Montreal last Saturday . At that point, Carolina had allowed seven or more goals in three of its last five games . . . Before facing Ottawa, Eric Staal led the Canes in scoring with six goals and 17 points, while rookie Jeff Skinner had six goals and 15 points — tops among NHL rookies at that point . . . Former Penguin Tom Kostopoulos scored his first goal of the season in the loss to Montreal .

Eric Staal led the Canes in scoring with six goals and 17 points before

Gilles Meloche has worn

a lot of hats during his

25-year run with the

Penguins organization.

Meloche manned the

pipes for the team from

1985-88. He was a

scout during the

Penguins’ two Stanley

Cup championships in

the early 1990s and he

was the goaltending

coach during the

team’s 2009 championship

— a position he

currently holds.

“I can thank him for

going around [scouting]

for me and helping me get

drafted here in Pittsburgh,”

said Marc-Andre Fleury, the

first-overall draft pick of

2003 NHL Entry Draft.

“I was a full-time scout

throughout [Fleury’s] junior

career, so I saw ‘Flower’

play when he was 16

years old,” Meloche said.

“In his last year of junior,

when you could tell we had a chance at picking up a goalie in the early picks, I started

following him more closely and I made a few trips to Cape Breton.”

Meloche said the team needed an “impact goalie” and that he saw that potential

in Fleury.

A few years after the Penguins drafted Fleury, Meloche became the full-time

goaltending coach and helped Flower blossom into a Cup-winning goaltender.

“When [Fleury] came out of juniors he was an all-reflex goalie,” Meloche said. “He

was one of the quickest goalies I’ve ever seen or worked with. But we had to work

more on positioning, because in this league reflex-only is not going to work.”

“Controlling rebounds was something that I had trouble with early on,” Fleury said.

“[Meloche] has been helping me out with that a lot.”

“Earlier in his career, Marc’s legs were really active, so he kicked everything back out

straight in front,” Meloche said. “Now it’s going more to the side and staying close to

him. That’s more about habits and repetition.”

It certainly helps that Meloche was a professional goalie for 19 seasons, and that is

something that draws admiration from both Fleury and Brent Johnson.

“I really respect him,” Johnson said. “I think that’s what matters most. You have to

respect the guy that is telling you what to do or suggesting you change something

here and something there, and Flower and I both do.”

“He’s played in the NHL for many years and has a lot of experience,” Fleury said.

Meloche scouted Fleury in juniors and is a part of the reason the Penguins drafted Fleury in 2003.

“It’s been cool to hang out with him and learn from him.”

Meloche believes that a goaltending coach needs to

be a former goalie, or at least have some experience with

the position.

“The mental part of the game is different, you’re a

loner back there,” Meloche said. “Yes, it’s a team game,

but you’re like a pitcher or a quarterback. If you make a

mistake, 20,000 people will be all over you. Goalies

decide games and you have to know how to relate to

them game-in, game-out and after giving up bad goals

and bouncing back.

“I believe that it is just by experience that you achieve

throughout your career that you can help a goalie.”

“I’ve had a few goalie coaches over my career, but he’s

great,” Johnson said. “He’s a goalie coach because he

knows exactly what the guy goes through. He played for a long time, and he knows if you

could have done something different on a play. We talk about it and go through it, and try

to make it right.”

Meloche worked with several different goalies in his time with the Penguins, but he said

that no matter who he

works with, the idea is

the same.

“A goaltender has to

stop the puck,” he said.

“Nobody has the same

style. Johnny will stand

up on more pucks than

Flower will, it’s just his

style. The base is always

there. You have to be at

the top of your crease

and you have to be able

to cut the angles and

follow the puck the

same way.

“It doesn’t matter

what style you have,

it all comes down to

the basics.”Meloche believes that a goaltending coach needs to be a former

goalie, or at least have some experience with the position.

Both Fleury and Brent Johnson respect Meloche

because of all of his experience in the league.

On Sunday, October 10, sixteen youth hockey teams from the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) in the Squirt age group (age 9 - 10) participated in a shootout competition at CONSOL Energy Center. The event was videotaped to be shown in episodes at Penguins home games.

The first round of competition featured heats between two teams striving to advance to the next round. Sixteen teams fielded five skaters shooting against the opposing team’s goalie.

After each team competition, an individual shooter and goaltender squared off against the opposing team’s individual tandem for a one-on-one competition. Each winning team and pair of individuals advanced to the next round of eight teams/tandems.

The format repeated as teams and individual pairs advanced through the quarter-final heats to move on to the semi-finals.

Robust competition marked the semi-final round for teams and individual tandems. The remaining two teams and individual tandems then had to “leave it all on the ice” in vying for the championship.

Early in the second intermission of each Penguins home game the various heats in the competition will be featured. Enjoy each episode.

Ask a grieving child how they’re feeling and you may get a lot of answers. Or none at all. For many, finding the words to express their feelings can be

difficult. But while finding the right words may not be easy, finding the right place to turn to for help can be. At the Caring Place, we’re here when grieving

It’s often said that Game Two is the most important contest in a best-of-seven series, particularly when the home team captures Game One.

On May 21, 2009, Evgeni Malkin made sure the Penguins — who were 3-2 victors in Game One of their Eastern Conference finals series with the Carolina Hurricanes — left Pittsburgh with a 2-0 stranglehold on the series as it shifted back to Carolina for Games Three and Four.

Malkin, who finished that regular season as the National Hockey League’s leading scorer, tallied his first career postseason hat trick — with his final tally being a goal that will live in Penguins’ postseason lore forever — and added an assist to lift Pittsburgh to a 7-4 victory.

Both teams exchanged goals and quality scoring chances throughout an entertaining first two periods.

Sidney Crosby started things off 1:51 into the contest with his NHL record-tying sixth goal to start a playoff game.

The two teams then began exchanging goals, with Malkin notching his first goal of the night and setting up a Max Talbot marker for Pittsburgh, and Chad Larose, Jussi Jokinen and Dennis Seidenberg scoring for Carolina to make the score tied at 3-3 late in the second period.

That’s how it appeared the score would remain heading into the final period, but instead the Penguins took advantage of a late power play as Chris Kunitz beat Cam Ward by firing a wrist shot from the near circle into the back of the cage with just eight seconds to play in the second period to put Pittsburgh ahead, 4-3.

Carolina evened things again, 4-4, on a Patrick Eaves goal early in the third period, but Malkin took over from there.

At the 8:50 mark, the eventual Conn Smythe Trophy winner gave the Penguins the lead for good when he scored his second goal of the night by banging home a Kunitz rebound from the left of Ward.

Then, 3:35 later, Malkin capped his hat trick with a signature tally.Taking the faceoff to the right of Ward against Matt Cullen, Malkin pushed the puck

forward to the corner. He then beat Seidenberg to the puck in the corner, skated around the back of the net to the bottom of the near circle, stopped and spun quickly, roofing a turning backhander over Ward, electrifying the crowd.

Pittsburgh went on to win, 7-4, en route to a series sweep of the Hurricanes and a second straight Stanley Cup Final appearance.

ROLEXEric Tangradi may be gone, but he’s neither forgotten nor out of the picture in terms of

the Penguins’ future plans.

In stressing that very point,

head coach Dan Bylsma cited

historical precedent.

“It’s not uncommon to see

this kind of situation for a kid

to come into camp, play really

well, kind of have his eyes

set on the goal line, which is

making the team,” Bylsma

explained. “Once you cross the

goal line you kind of feel like

you’ve finished the race, but

there’s lots more to go. There’s

an adjustment when that really

kind of happens.

“It’s happened lots in the

course of hockey. In Penguins’

history you’ve seen Kevin

Stevens and Mark Recchi do the

same thing, go down and tear

up Muskegon (Mich.) in the IHL

days and then get a chance to

come back here and never look

back. That’s Eric’s challenge, he’s

gotta go down there (to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton) and tear it up and be ready to come

back here and be a force when he comes back.”

Bylsma’s knowledge of Penguins’ history as it relates to Stevens and Recchi is impressive

but unnecessary.

That very scenario, more or less, is being played out this season by Mark Letestu.

Letestu didn’t make the team out of training camp last season, as Tangradi did this season

prior to being sent out again in late October. But Letestu did manage to get himself recalled

five times from AHL Wilkes-Barre Scranton in 2009-10.

He was re-assigned back to the AHL five times, as well. But Letestu’s persistence and

continued on page 99

Eric Tangradi is faced with the challenge of playing well enough in the AHL that he’s ready to be a force when he returns to the NHL.

growth with his repeated NHL experiences helped result in his appearing in four postseason

games with the Penguins last spring (his first was Game Three of the Montreal series) and all

18 of the Penguins’ first 18 regular-season games this campaign.

“I think any time you’re up here for a bit there’s a lot to learn,” Letestu said. “It’s a whole

different game, a whole different speed. In my situations having to go back down and still

play at an NHL speed was something I had to work at.

“Definitely this year for me it’s feeling that way, that it’s not so scary or intimidating. The

first time I came up it was definitely awe inspiring. I mean, look at some of the guys in the

room here. They do commercials, for goodness sake. Now that I’ve been here for a while

and I’m starting to get accustomed to the guys in the room you start to get the confidence

that you can play here and contribute at this level.”

Coming to grips with sharing a locker room with endorsement all-stars such as Max

Talbot, a guy who’s renown for always getting the “superstar treatment,” can take a while.

So can becoming accustomed to all the other perks NHL status provides.

Mark Letestu is tied for fourth in the NHL among rookie scorers with nine points, not including his shootout winner on Nov. 6 at Phoenix.

“I think the plane was the coolest thing,” Letestu said of his early life-in-the-big-league

discoveries. “The meals are all catered and they come out with snacks right after.

“The bus in the American League isn’t like that.”

On the ice, the pressure to perform goes beyond what it means to an individual’s career

in terms of promotion or demotion.

“Playing with certain guys can be tough,” Letestu said. “You don’t want to let them down,

you want to impress them. It can be difficult.

“Now, I’m really getting

used to my teammates and

that I can play with these

guys and I can make them

better just as they can make

me better.”

The numbers backed that

up through 18 games.

Letestu’s four goals, five

assists and nine points had

him tied for fourth in the

NHL among rookie scorers.

Included in his goals total

were a pair of power-play

tallies and two game-

winning goals. Not included

was the shootout winner

Letestu produced on Nov. 6

at Phoenix.

Tangradi had one goal

and one assist in nine

games with the Penguins.

His first seven games in

the AHL produced one goal

and one assist.

“I think in Eric’s case he’s

going down there to play

more, to dominate at that level

and then come back up here

with a boatload of confidence and contribute at this level,” Letestu said. “Eric’s not the type

of guy who’s going to go down and pout. He’s going to go down and work his tail off.

“He’ll be back here for sure. And he’ll be back contributing in a big way.”

Eric Tangradi netted his first NHL goal on Oct. 15 against the Islanders—assisted by Mark Letestu.

201120112011 WINTER WINTER WINTER WORLD WORLD WORLDUNIVERSITYUNIVERSITYUNIVERSITY GAMES GAMES GAMES

continued on page 117

Perhaps the longest running, yet least-known, international competition will resume action in January 2011. The 25th Winter World University Games will be held Jan. 27 through Feb. 6 in Erzurum, Turkey.

In a similar fashion to the Olympic Games, the World University Games are a biannual international

sporting event. The competition is sanctioned by International University Sports Federation (FISU), and features

collegiate athletes from countries across the globe.Much like the Winter Olympics, Ice Hockey is considered a marquee event at the

Winter World University Games. While the competition takes place in the Republic of Turkey, the contests will

certainly have a local feel. Throughout the years, the Penn State University Icers have established a presence

on the United States Men’s National University Team. Continuing this tradition, the 2011 squad features PSU Icers defensemen Kevin

Miller and Dan Petrick, along with forwards Eric Steinour and Tim O’Brien. Icers head coach Scott Balboni was named an assistant coach with the 2011 men’s team.

Not to be outdone, the United States Women’s National University Team will compete for the first time in 2011 and hope to make a lasting impression in Erzurum.

The U.S. Women are guided by Penn State Lady Icers head coach Mo Stroemel, and highlight a total of nine players from universities within our region.

Forwards Denise Rohlik (Penn State), Ramey Weaver (Robert Morris), and Tiffany Juha (California University of Pennsylvania), aim to light the lamp. Defensemen Becky Katz, Rachel Black (RMU), Kate Christofferson and Lindsay Reihl (PSU) look to protect the USA blue-line with Heather Rossi and Katie Vaughan (PSU) working as backstops for coach Stroemel and the inaugural women’s team.

The 22-player Team USA rosters are comprised of student-athletes on teams who participate in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA).

Be sure to check back for a feature on the 2011 Winter World University Games as the event date approaches.

On January 1, 2008, in a game for the ages at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, NY, the Penguins and Sabres took to the great outdoors … and the NHL Winter Classic was born. A National Hockey League attendance record setting crowd of 71,217 witnessed as the Penguins prevailed, 2-1. Sidney Crosby’s shootout-winner amid the snowfall turned the final page on the game’s storybook ending.

The success of the 2008 NHL Winter Classic led to it becoming an annual event played on New Year’s Day in a different NHL city. Here’s a summary of the matchups and locations for each game.

When Marc-Andre Fleury beat Tampa Bay, 5-1, on Nov. 12 to finally get his first win at

CONSOL Energy Center, he faced just three shots in the first period. After the game, a

reporter asked Fleury if he thought his teammates tried extra-hard to help him.

“I think they do every night,” Fleury said. “We never go into a game

trying to lose.”

 Neither does

Fleury. And the

usual sellout crowd

at CONSOL Energy

Center seemed

to perceive that,

chanting Fleury’s

name during warm-

the game. The

25-year-old goalie

greatly appreciated

the aural boost.

“The crowd

tonight, cheering

right from the

start. . . it was a

good feeling,”

Fleury said. “It

was awesome.”

His hiccup at

season’s start aside,

Fleury has been

awesome most of

his NHL career. The

victory over Tampa Bay

was his 150th, making

him the seventh-youngest goalie (25 years, 349 days) to reach that plateau. Fleury, of

course, backstopped the Penguins to the Stanley Cup in 2009 and to the Stanley Cup

Final the year before.

Fleury has achieved a lot in a short time. If you think he’s anything less than a

franchise-caliber netminder, you’re wrong.

Fleury followed up the 15-save triumph over Tampa Bay with a more demanding

performance the next night in Atlanta, stopping 31 pucks as the Penguins won, 4-2.

These were Fleury’s first back-to-back wins of the campaign.

But beating Tampa Bay was far from easy. Goaltending is about quality of saves,

not just quantity. About big saves at big times.

Fleury validated that against the Lightning, stopping Martin St. Louis on a second-

period breakaway with the score still 0-0, then holding Tampa Bay scoreless during a

5-on-3 power play with the Penguins leading, 2-1.

“He played great tonight,” coach Dan Bylsma said after. “He had some big saves

and stayed tall. It was a great game for Marc-Andre Fleury.”

Added Tampa Bay sniper Steven Stamkos, “[Fleury is] a good goalie. He’s won a

championship. He knows what it takes. He’s just been struggling, but he’s not going

to struggle all year. He made some big saves.”

Fleury didn’t overhaul his style in the game against Tampa Bay: “I don’t think

technically I did anything different. Maybe I felt more relaxed. I tried not to worry

too much. Just go out there and play hockey. It was fun.”

Fleury has often had trouble in a game’s early going. That was no problem against

Tampa Bay. The Lightning didn’t even register a shot until the game’s seventh minute.

“It went pretty good,” Fleury said. “We didn’t give up much. I just like to

keep it simple and not look at the clock too much. Stop one puck at a time.

Stay calm. Focused.

“We blocked a lot of shots, we came back in the [defensive] zone a lot, we didn’t

give up many odd-man rushes. That was big. We played good defense.”

Fleury allowed that being down two men against the Lightning was alarming:

“They have some good players. They had a lot of room and a lot of time to shoot.

But I knew with the guys we have, and the way they work, we could get out of it.”

The victory gave Fleury cause to look ahead.

 “It feels good, definitely. It’s a win,” said the 6-foot-2, 180-pounder. “I think we’ve

got to put a couple wins together. Get rolling, get some points, and get up there in

the league standings.”

The Penguins can do that with Fleury’s help. And Fleury seems to enjoy doing his

part a bit more when he has your help.

“It’s been tough [this season],” Fleury said. “You never know how the fans are

going to be. But to skate on the ice, and have them cheer for me already. . .

that’s good.”

Said Brooks Orpik, “That was awesome. The whole bench was talking about it.

If we hear it, he definitely heard it. That was really cool by the fans to get him

going there.”
