THREE DAYS SELF DRIVE IN A 4X4

The U-Drive 3 day’s+ summer packages starts from Reykjavik were your route is set towards the highland of Iceland. On day 1 tour is set towards Fjallabak North with various stops on the way. Day 2 the route is set to Fjallabak South and day 3 towards Fljótshlíð Valley. If you don´t think three days are enough time in the highlands you can add 1 to 2 days to the basic 3 days.

Day 2Fjallabak South - Öldufellsleið along Mýrdals-jökull glacier - Mælifellssandur - Hvanngil - Álftavatn – Hrafntinnusker - Accommodation

This day will be dedicated to the amazing track Fjallabak South and the ever chang-ing landscape in this area. Follow the track through numerous un-bridged rivers, black sandy deserts, mud and rocks. Enjoy views toMýrdalsjökull glacier on one side and diverse mountains and nature colours on the other. Visit along the way geothermal areas, beautiful lakes and waterfalls and hike to a nature bath. Experience travelling in a uniquewilderness that is only accessible in a modified vehicle or by foot.

Driving distance during the day is approx. 130-150km

Day 3Laufafell - Hungurfit- Fljótshlíð Valley - Road nr.1 towards Hella and Reykjavík

The last day on the tour we travel through very demanding tracks on our way through Hungurfit towards Fljótshlíð. This area is at the moment cowered with fine grey ashes from the volcano eruption in Eyjafjallajökullin 2010. Giving the nature a very unique appearance and a lot of depth. The tracks today are demanding and lead you amongst other through large and small rivers, up and down steep hills and through a narrow canyon.

VATNAJÖKULL GLACIER TROPHY

On this 5 day glacier tour, participants drive the modified 4x4 self-drive vehicles (Land Rover Defender, bigger tires 38“, Snorkel, VHF radio intercommunication, GPS, air com-pressor). With these vehicles the participants will explore Vatnajökull glacier, which very few people in the world have done.

Day 1 Reykjavík – West Edge of Vatnajökull GlacierOur staff will pick you up in the morning from your hotel in Reykjavik. Before the tour starts we will have a short reminder on off-road techniques and driving skills in Iceland and the car equipment. We board the ISAKs and drive out of town towards the west side of Vatnajökull glacier. To reach this area, we pass Þjórsárdalur Valley and the northern part of the Fjallabak area. We will use the opportunity to stop at some nice spots on the way. We spend the first night in a remote hut in the secluded surroundings at the edge of the glacier.

Day 2; Ascending the glacier – Grímsvötn Volcanic AreaIn the morning your guide will refresh your memory on how to drive on the glacier. An unbelievable adventure starts. We make our way with our super jeeps on the snow covered plateau and drive to the top of the glacier. And as we are on an exploration tour anything can happen, and timing gets less important. After a full day of driving in the snow, it is heavenly experience to reach the huts in Grímsfjöll (1.724 m), as they are warm upon arrival and prides themselves of a SAUNA on the top of the glacier.

Day 3; Day on the glacier – Kverkfjöll geo-thermal areaThis morning we gear up, and get ready to spend a whole day of exciting and challenging glacier driving. We will attempt to reach Kverkfjöll geothermal area located on the north side of the glacier. At Kverkfjöll we will go for a short hike to the top in order to get an amazing view over the geothermal area and also, over to the Askja crater and Dyn-gjufjallajökull glacier.

Day 4; Saying goodbye to the glacier In the morning, our convoy sets course to the southern part of the glacier. This can be an adventurous task, and in good weather you will have a magnificent view down from the glacier to the south coast and the Atlantic Ocean. In the afternoon we will reach our accommodation close to the glacier lagoon Jökulsárlón on the south coast. We will enjoy a local meal at the guesthouse and celebrate conquering Europe´s largest glacier together.

Day 5; Back to Reykjavik – South Coast - Goodbye dinnerToday we head back to Reykjavík. On the way along the south we will explore the Skaftafell National Park in more depth and stop at various sites along the coastline. At arrival in Reykjavík we will have a goodbye dinner.

ItineraryDay 1: Reykjavík – 1000 Water Way – Nature Bath - Thorsmörk ValleyOur staff will pick you up in the morning from your hotel in Reykjavik. Before the tour starts we will have a short demonstration on off-road techniques, driving skills in Iceland and the car equipment. We will also go over the planned route for the coming days and make sure everyone is well prepared. Your modified 4x4 self-drive vehicle is ready for you outside.

We board the ISAKs driving out of town east towards the 1000 Water Way, our first challenge of the day. Here we get to practise and learn the basics on how to drive in water by crossing un-bridged rivers. After this fun ride it is time to stop the engine and go for a short walk to a secluded nature bath. Get your first experience to soak in natural warm river. Remember to pack your swimsuit and towel, this is something you do not want to miss outon! After this unique bathing experience it is time to head back to the main road and continue our trip to glacier valley Thorsmörk. There are three glaciers that surround Thorsmörk, those are Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull and Tindfjallajökull. We enter the rough and adventurous tracks into Þórsmörk Valley and cross numerous un-bridged rivers on the way. We visit the former glacier lagoon by Gígjökull glacier. In the late afternoon it is time to go to our accommodation and prepare a delicious bbq dinner with the guide. Enjoy a bright summer night while relaxing after a long day in the outdoor Jacuzzi.

Day 2: Black Sandy Beaches – Geysir Hot Spring – Gullfoss Waterfall – Highland tracks – Þingvellir – ReykjavíkAfter breakfast we head down to the unique black beaches by the Atlantic Ocean and put the ISAK´s to the test and try some fun beach driving. From the beach it is time to head inlands again and drive up to the famous Geysir Hot Spring area. From there we visit the renowned Gullfoss. We enter the highlands south of Langjökull glacier and make our way through the mountains down to the well-known Thingvellir national park. Late arrival in Reykjavík. We return the ISAK´s and drive you back to your accommodation so you can have a night out on town.

Day 1; Friday: Reykjavík – Landmannalaugar – Fjallabak North – Langis-jór - HólaskjólOur staff will pick you up in the morning from your hotel in Reykjavík and bring you to our headquarters. Before the tour starts we will hold a briefing on off-road techniques

and driving skills in Iceland, the car equipment as well as discussing the program. We board the ISAKs driving out of town south towards the highland track Fjallabak North.After about 2 hour’s drive we reach the highland tracks and head to the pearl of the Icelandic highlands, Land-mannalaugar. Once in Landmannalaugar we take a short walk in the amazing lava fields and enjoy a relaxing bath in the natural hot pool before continuing our drive in the highlands. We will make several stops during the day enabling us to enjoy the varied nature and landscape as we pass by. Before arriving to the hut we make a detour and visit Lake Langisjór. The lake is among the purest mountain lakes in Iceland. There are many islands on the lake and the landscape is spectacular. On the way back from Langisjór we stop at Eldgjá Volcano Fissure. Arrive in the early evening to our hut in time to prepare a traditional highland bbq dinner and sing along to some songs under the evening sun.

Day 2; Saturday: Fjallabak South – Strútur – Mælifellssandur – Hrafntinnusker - Landman-nahellirAfter breakfast we gear up and head over to Fjallabak South for more challenging roads and terrain. One of the first stops this morning is by mountain hut Strútur, from there we go for a moderate hike to reach the secluded pool Strútslaug. After a nice hike and bath we continue our drive along glacier Mýrdalsjökull and through the black and mysterious desert of Mælifellssandur. From the desert we head over to the colourful geothermal area Hrafntinnusker. Hrafntinnusker is located next to glacier Torfajökull and the area consists of countless hot springs and steam clouds. We continue our drive along de-manding mountain tracks and reach our hut in the early evening. We fire up the grill and start cooking another delicious mountain dinner.

Day 3; Sunday: Krakatindar – Fjallabak South – Fljótshlíð - ReykjavíkToday it is time to get back to civilisation but first we will drive some challenging tracks passing mountain Krakatindar and over to Hungurfitjar. On our way to Fljótshlíð valley we drive between three glaciers and get good views over the recent volcanic eruption site in Eyjafjallajökull. We leave the highlands behind and make our way to the south coast. We arrive in the late afternoon or early evening back to Reykjavík. Drop off at your accommodation in Reykjavík.

SIX DAYS ICELAND SUMMER TROPHY

The Iceland Summer Trophy is a guided self-drive tour showing Iceland off the beaten track. The tour takes you mostly to places in uninhabited areas of Iceland far away from civilization. On adventurous trails participants use modified 4x4 self-drive vehicles (Land Rover Defender 110, bigger tires 38“, Snorkel, VHF radio intercommunication, GPS, air compressor) which were especially designed for demanding terrain.

Day 1: Saturday; Golden Circle with a highland touch - HveravellirOur Iceland Trophy staff will pick you up in the morning from your hotel in Reykjavík and bring you to our headquarters. Before the tour starts we will hold a briefing on off-road techniques and driving skills in Iceland, the car equipment as well as discussing the schedule of the tour. We board the Defenders driving out of town towards the famous sights of National Park Thingvellir. North of there we will encounter the first rough terrain close to the mountain Hlöðufell and turn into Linuvegur track close to Langjökull glacier

where we get acquainted with our utility vehicles. We visit the Geysir area with ever-spouting Strokkur and the majestic waterfall Gullfoss, and having seen these sights we make our way into the interior. We stay overnight in the mountain huts of Hveravellir and enjoy a bbq dinner in the mountains.

Day 2: Sunday; Eyfirðingavegur north of HofsjökullWe leave the mountain track Kjölur behind and turn onto the trail Eyfirðingavegur north of Hofsjökull, a hardly ever travelled road with a tough crossing at the river Blanda and more rivers ahead. The highland expertise of our Iceland Trophy staff will get you safely through these waters. We pass the hut Ingólfss-káli and stay overnight in the mountain hut in Laugafell. We enjoy the evening in the great outdoors and take a bath in the warm and natural geothermal pool.

Day 3: Monday; Sprengisandur – MöðrudalsöræfiWe leave Laugafell behind and drive with our convoy onto the historic track Sprengisandur and down Bárðardalur valley back to civilization. We will pass the beautiful lake Mývatn before coming to Möðrudalsöræfi plateau where we find our accom-modation at Möðrudalur, Iceland’s highest farm over sea level.

Day 4: Tuesday; KverkfjöllWe begin the day with a stop at Sænautasel a restored 19th century’s heath cottage and visit Laugavalladalur where we have the unique opportunity to take a natural shower in a geothermal waterfall. We visit the breathtaking canyons Hafrahvammagljúfur close to the huge hydropower dam at Kárahnjúkar before we venture towards the mountain range and geothermal area Kverkfjöll, at the north eastern edge of glacier Vatnajökull. Once there we have a hike to an ice cave and we stay one night at the Kverkfjöll hut.

Day 5: Wednesday; Askja and Southern GæsavatnaleiðWe leave Kverkfjöll and drive north to Askja crater. We go for a hike up to the crater visiting Öskjuvatn and those, who dare, take a warm bath in the crater of Víti (Hell). From there we take the rough trail Southern Gæsavatnaleið which leads us adventurously along the edge of Vatnajökull over the challeng-ing „Flæður“, the origin of the river Jökulsá á Fjöllum again into Sprengisandur route. Here we stay overnight at the close-by hut Nýjidalur.

Day 6: Thursday; Thjórsárdalur - ReykjavíkWe follow the Sprengisandur route down to Thjórsárdalur where road number one takes us back towards Reykjavík, stopping on the way for beautiful sites like Gjáin “The Gorge” and Hjálparfoss waterfall. We turn back to our vehicles and head back to Reykjavík to enjoy an exclusive farewell bbq dinner at a really unique Trophy house. Drop off in the evening at your accommodation in Reykjavík.
