Interview: Ben Ogu (Fame and Faces Boutique/designs)Franc: We’ve seen a few of your designs and we got to say, WOW!!! I’m

really impressed, but at what age did fashion start interesting you?BEN: At the age of five.

Franc: And any major influences while growing up, from any designers, local and international?

BEN: my greatest influence was my mum, in her own time she was one of the greatest designers.

Franc: Now I’ve seen the Bold & Beautiful a few times (I won’t say how many!) is it that glamor-ous?

BEN: It can be very glamorous but it’s my pas-sion to design that drives me.

Franc: I’m sure you also put fashion shows to-gether, what has been your biggest to date?

BEN: My biggest was the VAAL FET COMPETI-TION last year where i put together 145 garments on the ramp and gave away about 5 of it.

Franc: I’m sure a few of our readers would love to know have you ever been to any of the big fashion shows overseas?

BEN: Not yet but looking forward to itFranc: If you had name to 1 fashion designer

who you think is an icon in the industry, which would it be and why?BEN: Herme’s from France, his designs are precise and wearable, his atten-

tion to details is fantasticFranc: Now I’m not very clued up when it comes to fashion trends, but how

do you predict and know what will be “in” every winter or summer?Ben: Nature and trends gives you clear pictureFranc: We at ICED* wear jeans and black/white shirts, what would you sug-

gest to improve our look?BEN: Innovation has caved in to designs, people are not glued to known

colours this day, is a matter of complimenting this un-known colour to another. I prefer taking colours that represent your brand and twist it to a very fantastic outfit.

Franc: I’m sure there will be a few aspiring designer reading this, what advice would you give them?

BEN: My advice is stay focus, have passion and put God first in your dreams, a designer is born not made.

Franc: If any of our readers would like to buy some of your dresses, where can they get hold of you?

Ben: You can reach us at Shop No. 34b Mark park shopping Centre Vereeniging, or you can contact us at 016-4211-739 or 083-9456622.

Cape

Tow

n! Winter slowly starting to come closer in Cape Town but we have some cool stuff to keep you warm!

So my job as a freelance writer is quite cool, seeing that it gets me to mingle and catch a jingle with some awesome people in the music biz. Had the opportunity to go and watch Mark Haze and his band 12th Avenue at Die Boer in Durban-ville this month. Die Boer is a “lekker” restaurant theater and is owned by the iconic Dowwe Dolla. So Allison and I hit the place on the Friday night, not knowing what really to expect seeing that an old Vaalie “don’t really have been ex-posed perse to a cultural event” in some time.

Nice awesome setting with a stage, great sound equipment, sound engineer setup the whole lot, all combined into a restaurant. To my amazement when doing the research a lot of well-known top Afrikaans artist frequently do some shows here, so do pop in here when you’re in the area. The food is great!

So back to the show… now by know some of you have seen Mark do his thing on Idols, and there is a real rock n roll story behind it really, the man has been blessed with a voice from the rock gods themselves. Back that up with a band that has been jamming for quite some time and you have a winning recipe! I think I was in shock\amazement\awe until

the 5th song into the show. We really have some remarkable talent in our country! The band consists with Mark on Vocal\guitar, Bjorn Faree on lead guitar, Gareth Haze on drums and Brian Lee on bass. Very rarely do you see a well-knit band have so much fun. Jamming songs from their new album and some great old school rock n roll covers!

The new album “Where angels fear to fly” is a must have for your collection, tracks that will feed your moods and soul for any occasion. The album tells a story that will have you jumping up and down and thinking of love in no time! Singles such as “Wake up” has been airing all over the country. Best part in this long road to hard work of making it, labels have rejected the sound because it was “too rock n roll”? And in quoting Mark –“Rock n Roll will save the world!” So get out there and give the guys a listen, well worth it and amazing talent from South-Africa!!

Keep Rocking ICED ReadersJ.

Krav MagaKrav Maga is essentially a tactical defence skill. Its philosophy empha-

sizes threat neutralization, simultaneous defensive and offensive manouvres, and aggressive endurance in a ‘him-or-me’ context. Tech-

niques generally focus on training combatants in conditions approximat-ing real-life scenarios.

Krav Maga trains combatants for situations where losing would be potentially fatal. Its attack and defence manouvres aim to neutralize the threat and facilitate rapid and safe escape. These include a variety of fast and fluid crippling attacks to vulnerable body parts through various ef-ficient and often brutal strikes.

The improvised use of any available aids is encouraged - maximizing personal safety in a fight is emphasized. AIKMA SA (Authentic Israeli Krav Maga Academy South Africa) is administrated by Master: Lenord Le Hanie (VDBJ) and instructors Arnold Bosman and Willem Harding (Vereeniging) under guidance from Grand Master Danny Hazan (Israel). Playing Dress Up From a very young age we as women (and even some

fabulous men) have been programmed to enjoy playing dress up, from princess’s and princes to doctor doctor

and teacher teacher – Our childhoods are ones of fun and make believe. That shouldn’t have to end as you get older.

Being in the fashion industry I meet people on a daily basis who use clothing and playing dress up as a way to portray who they are, and even sometimes to help others into believ-ing what’s inside to gain freedom, acceptance or even respect. Fair trade? I totally agree.

A few days ago I was catching up on some much needed blogging time when I came across a blog post entry about fes-tival fashion and the likes of what people wear to different events to fit in – I can completely relate to this idealism.

I, myself enjoy playing dress up as it is a moment in time when I can be something else and not be judged or rushed off to an institution for having a personality dis-order. Jokes aside however; floral head-

bands and Wellingtons at festivals allow me to tap into the wild child in me, strutting my stuff in my favourite LBD on a night out with my girls shows off my inner diva; whereas rocking a pair of sneakers and tights on the weekend Kate Moss style relaxes and frees my mind from a busy work week.

Designers and philosophers (don’t quote me here it just sounded more believable if I added in a few “reliable” sources) have lived and succeeded by these very feelings that clothing conquers up in fashion loving divas.

Please don’t take what I am saying the wrong way; I don’t condone pretending to be something or someone you are not. But if it brings a little joy to your life being able to let go, or show off your inner vibrant and colourful personality using clothing as your catalyst then why not? If it worked for Superman and Cinderella it is a definitely ‘yes’ for me.

Be a modern day Cinderella

How did State Society first begin? State Society began mid 2011 with Clifford Barnard (front man vocals and guitar) and Petri Burger (drums and percussion) playing around with song ideas trying to understand the sound concept of this new project. In August 2011 we started writing for the self-sponsored album now called “State Society - This Life”. Enter Jonathan Hughes to fill the Bass playing position even though 80% of the recording process had been completed. Through-out the rest of the recording process of the album and our 30 show “2012 Club tour” we remained a three piece mostly. We made a decision to add a second guitarist, a good friend Marchant Pre-torius to full the “second guitar role” on the album. Thus, the true birth of State Society. What is the ultimate goal for the band? The ultimate goal for our band like any other is to have to leave our jobs and become full time musicians not only that but write great music that the masses can relate to and connect with. Short term – State Society would love the opportunity to play on stages nationally with some of the bigger names e.g. Prime Circle, Parlotones, Dan Patlansky, Straatlig-kinders, Tree 63, Gangs of Ballet and the likes. We would like to accom-plish an independent sale of this album between 2000 and 4000 copies in the next two years while building our fan base which is vital to any band. Long term - 2014 record our second album, get signed to a major label and tour South Africa and other countries. What are your plans for the future? Our plans for the future are completing radio interviews, rolling out the full 2013 club tour hopefully starting mid-May to promote our album “This life”. Shooting a few music videos and getting them on MK and the likes including TV interviews. Line up some festival type shows such as Oppi, Splashy 2014, Woodstock and the likes. Most importantly have fun.Do you think the Vaal music scene is dying? We believe the Vaal music scene is at a tipping point where there are many matured, well rounded musicians willing to go the mile, however in our humble subjective perspective, honestly don’t fully understand the music business. Hell we as a band are still learning. There is gener-ally a poor understanding of the live music scene in the Vaal, probably driven by the general perspective of the public. The tipping point is that

the tables are turning, where a hunger for something new is distinctively showing itself. We all see it where club owners are opening their doors to new and upcoming acts, the pubic are showing up to support. The older generation and younger generation of “rockers” are com-ing out of the woodwork to support. I do believe the current scene is grow-ing itself due to the pollination of the older local bands that came before us in the area. I don’t believe that the Vaal music scene will ever die as many great bands have spawned from the area and will continue to; compared to other provincial areas the Vaal music scene is quite alive. What bands influence the band?Well it’s quite a variety; we as a band have very different musical influences. Petri our drummer listens to more the metal type genre, Killswitch, Trivium, Chromium, Pestroy, Bullet for my valentine etc. Jonathan listens to 30 Seconds to Mars some of the older stuff Rolling stones and Led Zep. Marchant listens to Chevelle, Seether etc.Cliff listens to the more blues rock type, Dave Matthews, The Who, Dan Pat-lansky, Matt Corby, Hendrix etc.How did the name State Society come about? The “State Society” name came about where the concept of our band name was vital to the idea behind our music. It’s absolutely critical that people connect with our music in a positive way, thus the writing intent of the band. Generally we go through a journey. We all show the world that all is well, however our lives are falling apart or we are struggling with massive challenges, yet in society we reflect this front, a mask of deflection that all is fine on our lives. We walk around with smiles on our faces pretending all is fine when our worlds, in some cases, are falling apart. Thus, the state of society today. We in our music reflect some of those journeys with a positive outcome.Describe the band in one word? Resilient

The Vereeniging SPCAOur mission is in our name: the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to

Animals.Unfortunately animal abuse and neglect is a reality. On a daily

basis, the staff and inspectorate have to deal with issues concerning the well being of all animals.

We have a vast area to cover, which includes having to go to auctions, visit abattoirs, tend to emergencies 24/7 and assist the public that come to our offices.

We do outreaches in underprivileged areas, where we dip and deworm and educate the owners on proper care for their animals.

As we receive no support from the government, we rely on the assistance from the public to continue in our quest to help and protect the animals in our care.

Before buying a pet from a pet shop, which only promotes the non-stop breeding of animals, please visit your nearest SPCA and adopt a pet. They love unconditionally and you can give a deserving animal a second chance.

Sterilize/Neuter your pets to prevent the continuous breeding of animals. Keep identification on your pets at all times, it is their only ticket home.

Please visit and like our Facebook page, SPCA Vereeniging. If you would like to assist us in caring for the animals in our care,

Mistake doing #1: Doing isolated exercisesDoing exercises like bicep curls and tricep kick-backs will not

get you any significant results. One-muscle-at-a-time moves simply don’t stimulate enough muscle fibers to build lean muscle.

If you want to build lean muscle while burning fat, you need to preform exercises that stimulate as many muscles and expend as much energy as possible at the same time.

Mistake #2: working out with machinesMachines alter the way your body naturally moves and restrict your

range of emotion. Severely limits your ability to fully active all of your muscles fibers.

If you want fast results you should incorporate exercises that allow your body to move naturally with full range of motions so you can sky-rocket your metabolism and tone your entire physique.

Mistake #3 Doing long bouts of cardioIf you’ve been pounding the pavement or the treadmill with nothing

to show for it (except sore joints and a pair of skinny worn out sneakers), you already know it takes a lot of effort to get minimal results.

Mistake #4 Doing crunches and sit-ups to get 6 pack absDoing traditional abs exercises like crunches and sit ups WILL NOT get

you a six pack. In fact, doing any exercises that target your abs won’t get you a six pack either! The key to getting sculpted abs is to burn off that stubborn layer of belly fat that’s hiding them!

Mistake #5 repeating the same workout over and overRepeating the same workouts over and over is a sure fire way to STOP

getting results. But when it comes to your workouts, if you want to keep making progress and keep seeing changes in your body, you’ve got to start switching things up.

Mistake #6 Doing long workoutsLonger workouts do not equal better of faster results. If you’ve been

slaving away at the gym and your body isn’t visibly changing, you can’t do more of the same thing and expect a different result.

When it comes to getting lean and fit, your body responds to quality over quantity. I’m going to tell you the #1 way to super-charge your workouts – this simple, yet overlooked method is the single fastest way to getting lean and ripped while cutting your workout time almost in half. No- jokes this technique will open a can of whoop-ass on your workout.

Stop doing the same old workouts haven’t gotten you any results and find out the TRUTH about how to get lean and ripped with shorter, more effective workouts

Home grown talent Wesleigh OrrAs a kid, most boys dream about being racing drivers when we grow up,

we play in the dirt with our Hot Wheels cars racing with our friends , but Wesleigh managed to live his dream, so ICED* decided to have a chat with him.

Franc: Ok the big question first, how many hot wheels, remote control cars or car models did you have when you were growing up?!

Wesleigh: Had a few Remote control cars which I enjoyed, BUT the big problem was they didn’t have a steering wheel so got frustrated after a while.

Franc: You started your career in Karting, at what age did you start?

Wesleigh: I started Karting at the Age of 7, which did make a big difference in my career having the extra time.

Franc: who mentored you in those early years?Wesleigh: I had a local guy named Marius Human

who gave me my first training in the early days. After that my Dad helped me going forward.

Franc: From Karting you’ve moved into other formats in racing, what formats have you driven and which one is your favourite?

Wesleigh: hahahah I have driven so many differ-ent cars would almost be impossible to mention them all. My Favourite to drive was definitely the A1gp car, incredible to drive and physically demanding beyond comprehension.

Franc: Which driver in racing do you think is the best, past and present?

Wesleigh: to pin point the best driver is very difficult, every driver has a strong point. If I had to pick for absolute raw talent Senna was the best that ever lived. Currently the best driver I believe is Alonso and has the full package for any teams pick at this stage!

Franc: Is it hard to stay focused with all the fame

and fortune in today’s racing profession?Wesleigh: I think the idea the Media gives the world about racing Driv-

ers lives is not fully true. All the glamour you see on TV is not really how it works. Yes it is tough to stay on form with the media punishing the driv-ers for small errors, but that’s the mental side. Any sport is difficult with the pressures to win.

Franc: what is the highlight of your Career so far?Wesleigh: I have had really special moments in

my career, but the fact that I have been able to make a transition last season from a racing driver to a Director of a racing team in Asia and Africa has really been a goal I wanted to achieve.

Franc: what goals have you sent for yourself for the future?

Wesleigh: I am working on a development program with some partners to launch young underprivileged kids to be able to live this racing dream and hopefully flourish going forward in the next few years.

Franc: I know alot of guys are gona want to know this, what car is parked in your garage? (And could we borrow it! Hehehe)

Wesleigh: Wouldn’t you love to know, and the answer is NO!

Franc: There’s alot of young talent out there who look up to you, what advice do you have for them if they want to follow in your footsteps?

Wesleigh: Work hard play hard.!! Find Balance in your every day life!! If you want something go for it, no one said its easy , but when you look back you can smile and wave BABY!!!!!

Thx for chatting with us, you truely are a legend in the making and we at ICED* wish you only the best, and if you ever happen to drive past our of-fices in a Ferrari and need a navigator, count us in!!

Bottle upLet’s say it’s true that a woman was made out of a man’s rib, it is

only then logical to say God was actually securing enough space inside of us so that we can easily fit this emotional bottle that we

are accused of keeping our emotions in.We are all familiar with the Masculine Heroic stereotype that men

opt not to disclose their emotions and feelings because they do not want to appear weak and powerless. For that reason they decide to bottle them up and wrap them up with a soft comforting smile if necessary. This is not so far from the truth, why do you think we lift weights for? Big, strong and powerful are the three things that define us.

Don’t get me wrong here we are emotional beings too. It is said that a guy once updated a Facebook status “Finally found love, yay I am so happy” a few seconds later the ex-girlfriend likes the status and things got sour, and the guy burst into tears. The reason we choose not to watch romance chick flicks is because in the end, women contem-plate and fantasize about a relationship like the one in a movie and men end up in tears or trying to stop them from coming out.

The other thing is we re too observant, we realise that it is a tradition to cuddle after having shared how you feel, but some of us have a problem doing so. That is exactly what we are avoiding. Not to say we don’t give each other hugs, we just do it differently and the purpose is also different. We don’t just share stories, start crying and then cuddle; it takes more to open our emotional door as we’ve worked hard to keep it sealed.

It seems the bottle we keep our emotions in has a leak hence we constantly feel the need to go to the bottle store to fill it up!

A high school biology teacher looks to become a successful mixed-martial arts fighter in an effort to raise money to prevent extra-curricular activities from being axed at

his cash-strapped school. Produced by Adam Sandler, Kevin James doesn’t delivers an expected performance, normally clumsy and sad but in this movie he shows his tougher side but still maintains his comic nature. Here comes the boom is like any other fighting film and that’s about going up against the odds and doing what is right. A funny perfor-mance from the Legend Henry Winkler alongside Salma Hayek who adds the sexiness to the movie.

Lawless 6/10During the Prohibition era, the Bondurant brothers

-- Forrest (Tom Hardy), Howard (Jason Clarke) and Jack (Shia LaBeouf) -- run a successful liquor bootlegging business in Franklin County, Virginia, with the help of their friend, Cricket Pate (Dane DeHaan), using their bar as a front for their illegal activities. Lawless is a movie for more of the older crowd, it is not a fast paced action but slow and gradually builds up. The cast in the movie is second to none with Guy Pearce and Gary Oldman delivering great performances as usual and expect to see a different side to Shia LaBeouf’s acting as he takes on a more serious role.

God of War: AscensionSo, Kratos has been part of many a gamers’ life since PS2, but now it

seems that he’s still going strong......or so we thought. In GOW:Asension you go back, way back, like 6 months after your

deal with Ares and after he tricked you into killing your family (tsk, tsk, tsk - naughty Ares) and now Kratos is angrier than a bird at a pig! Kra-tos decides to break the boold oath, but the people of Olympus don’t like it when oaths are broken and Kratos gets imprisoned for breaking the oath and sentenced to a eternity in chains in a prison for the living damned, where he also gets tortured by Furies(ferociously ugly and bad lady type person things). The forementioned Furies are also the main “bad guys” in the game(not even a sex change can help these ugly betties). And now you have to battle for your freedom, regain your honour and avengeage your family.

One of the new additions in GoW:Ascension is the multiplayer mode, which is cool. You pledge yourself to either - Zues, Ares, Poseidon or Hades, each with special perks and strong points. You then have to battle it out and fight for the honour of your master. There are 4 modes in multiplayer 1.)Favor of the gods, 2.)Deathmatch, 3.) Capture the flag and 4.) Trial of the gods and each of these has type of strategy attached to them - but you can figure that one out. Other new features include the ability to steal weapons and play around with time to solve some obsticales.

This is without a doubt a ‘God of War’ game and includes everything you know and love about it(finger cramps and hand spasms included), but you have to ask yourself - Are they milking the franchise? I hope for the love of Kratos, that this is last game, because you can’t get anymore out it without damaging the franchise.

The visuals are amazing and really pushes the PS3 to it’s graphical limits,as we’d expect it to(I don’t have enough eyes to look around and defend myself ), but everytime I looked, I went WOW!

It’s a good game to get if you like the fighting/adventure type of games with beautiful scenery, amazing sounds and lots of mini-games. If you’re a fan of the franchise, get it to com-plete your collection, but be warned.....it’s addictive and you’ll want to play all of them again!

The game is rated 18 for blood, gore, extreme violence, and nudity - but that’s how Spartans’ roll! BY CORRY.
