and we all just wanna blow off some steam, but there are re-percussions to bad decisions, so think it through!

There was such a great response to our “Hottest Summer Pic” that even i struggled to keep up!! Thanks 2 all that entered, and it was pretty close for a while, but the win-ning pic won by 420 likes! Outstand-ing! Have a really Merry Christmas with your loved ones, and a rocking New Year’s Eve. I’ll see you all next year!! PLEASE PARTY RESPONSIBLY.

Wow! December is here, where did the rest of the year go!! Well it was a big year for me personally and the year ICED* was born! From everyone here at ICED*, we

thank you our readers and our advertisers who have helped us grow in leaps and bounds!!

December is normally your biggest party month, with people taking breaks and holidays, and enjoying themselves to the max but it’s also the month with the most road fatalities in our coun-try. So if you’re on the road this December, please choose a des-ignated driver if you’re having a few drinks. And drive carefully with enough rest stops if you’re lucky enough to go down to the coast. We also have a write up on a great organisation called “RED FROG” , they help any young person that find themselves in a bad situation while on holiday. I know it’s been a tough year

Christmas Lovin’Noël, Weihnachten, Navidad, Kersfees. Christmas, the time has arrived. The time of the year for festivities,

food, drinks and best of all gifts, just because. This is the most anticipated holiday of the year, whether because of the food or gifts, no one knows. But do we still celebrate Christmas for all the right reasons? Or does society make it another money making scheme. Have we all forgotten what Christmas really is for. Christmas was not created so you could have an extra day off work, or so you can eat yourself to death.

No, Christmas is a day that should rather be filled with love, kindness and acceptance. Rather than expensive gifts, enough food that could feed a nation and way to many alcohol intake.

This year we should celebrate Christmas like hippies, not with drugs, but with love. And even for the ones that are not religious, I am sure that you can still love, and you could still be kind for one day. And to all the travellers, just for that day keep the road rage for another holiday. So this Christmas let us give back to every-one with love, kindness and grace. May you enjoy your Christmas, may all the little children’s wishes come true, and may all parents receive a good year end bonus, I’m sure you will need it. So remember to share love this festive season, young love, old love, family love and even friendships. And enjoy your food still, do not let this article take away your appetite.

From all of us here at Iced magazine, a Merry Christmas to all.By Tamen de Lange.

We have all experienced the drama’s and disappointments of meeting someone for the first time, especially seeing that the only expectations we may have of these movie-like rendezvous, are exactly that, movies – And let me remind you that movies are not always as real as you had hoped for.

I find it highly entertaining watching series such as “Boiling point” and “Disaster Date”, as these provide hopeless romantics AKA “me” with a sense of humour to carry on searching for my “perfect mate” – I mean I have never been subjected to a gorilla show, cat meowing or watching someone I just met jump around like a lunatic – A typical Friday night for the victim of a reality TV show.

I could go on and on regarding “first date” failures I have been subjected to and have heard about from close friends, however let me share with you a few of my personal top tips to avoiding ‘real-life” disaster dates:

1. Never make a lady fetch you for a date – Fetching her proves you are willing to go the extra mile for her.

2. Remember your manners, “please, thank-you” and opening doors are things our parents have imprinted into our minds to help us distinguish between one night stands and future pros-pects.

3. Pay for the first date – This is crucial if you want to impress

your lady and keep her wanting more.4. Keep the conversation light and fun – No one wants to talk

about religion, your views on after-life or whether or not you believe in sex before marriage.

5. For a first date I would opt for a hug or light “peck” on the cheek to bid her goodnight – A first kiss also helps to determine whether or not there will be a second date. (Fresh breath and

soft lips) No one like s a Mr Sloppy.

7. Lastly dress to impress!

And the dating saga continues…

Drunk Driving

Red Frogs

Drunk Driving is one of the biggest threats to Road Safety in South Africa. Research indicates that 50% of people who die on

the roads have a blood alcohol concentration above 0.05 gram per 100 millilitres.1475 people died on our roads last year in December involving drunk driving. A recent judgment by the Cape High Court has opened the door for the Asset Forfeiture Unit to confiscate the cars of drunken drivers and speedsters. This has been much debated in legal circles and the Arrive Alive Campaign has received praise from members of the public who have seen enough trauma caused by the offenders.

The Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) decided on the 9th of Novem-ber 2006 that a motor vehicle that is driven under the influence of liquor or while the level of alcohol in the driver’s blood exceeds the prescribed limit, is liable to be forfeited to the State in terms of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act. It was held that the Act is not restricted to organized crime, but extends to ordinary crimes com-mitted by individuals, and that a motor vehicle constitutes an ‘instru-mentality’ of offences and is thus capable of being forfeited to the State in terms of the Act. “Instrumentality” is defined as “any prop-

erty which is concerned in the commission or suspected commis-sion of an offence at any time before or after the commencement of this Act, whether committed within the republic or elsewhere.”

The court also held, however, that a vehicle driven in those condi-tions is not liable to forfeiture in every case. It held that a court may only order the vehicle to be forfeited if such an order would be proportional to the particular offence, which requires a court to weigh the particular circumstances in which an order for forfei-ture is sought. The confiscation of vehicles is not unique to South Africa. There is a worldwide realization that stronger enforcement is required to rid the roads of repeat offenders. This information was taken from the arrive alive website. We at ICED* know that most of our readers have worked hard and saved up for their December holiday or break, and we want you to have a great summer but we would also like is 2 see you guys next year, so please if you do go out and drink, do so responsibly, one night of relaxation could cause a life time of heart ache and regret! So take turns in being the desig-nated driver, especially to all the Matrics going on their Matric break, you could save lives!!

Red Frogs is an internationally recognized support network that started in Australia in 1997, that aims to be a positive presence in the partying environment. We have officially been running in South Africa since 2009, and you can find our Red Frog Crew of volunteers at

Matric holidays, universities and festivals around the country. The Red Frog Crew is most well-known assisting party-goers by walking young people home, cooking pancakes, handing out Allen’s Red

Frogs* , and most importantly, offering emotional support through what can often be a challenging season of life.By helping young people to make positive and informed choices in the partying culture, Red Frogs is safeguarding the next generation of

South African young people. So if any of our readers find theselves in a situation that they’re not comfortable while on their matric or cam-pus break, please contact them: 076 RED FROG(076 733 3764), and their website is: http://redfrogssouthafrica.wordpress.com/

Spinning classesWhat is spinning?

Spinning is an intense cardio workout on a stationary bike. In spinning class’s all the bikes face the instructor who plays a variety of music designed to motivate you to pedal fast or slower, according to the beat, while talking you through visualisations of an outdoor cycling workout. He/she will describe vari-ous settings to you, while you supposedly cycling through these enviroments, you adjust your resistance and pedal accordingly. For example: “ Adjust your resistance to eight as we go up a hill, you’re almost at the top…”

Health Benefits of doing Spinning:1. It can maximize your body’s fat burning ability. 2. It can help you develop lean muscles. 3. It can improve your cardiovascular health. 4. It can improve your posture.5. It can work out many different muscle groups. 6. It can boost your overall fitness level. Spinning tips:Because spinning is such a vigorous activity, you should do a few things be-

fore, after and during your class to make the most of your workout:1. Hydrate.Spinning makes you sweat. A lot. So hydrate with at least two glasses of water,

at least an hour before you start a class. Bring a water bottle with you. And be sure to drink lots of water when you’re done.

2. Eat right. Your body will need lots of fuel to get through a spinning workout. Eat a bal-

anced diet that includes protein, carbs, fruits and veggies. Don’t eat an hour before you work out, though, because spinning on a full stomach could make you nauseated. Instead, eat a well-balanced after-spin snack or meal

3. Go at your own pace.Because you can adjust the speed and intensity of the workout to your liking,

you should never feel like you have to overextend yourself during a class. If you’re not comfo rtable at a certain pace, slow down. It’s not worth injuring yourself or getting discouraged.

4. Stretch. Stretching before and after a spinning workout will reduce your risk of injury

and will loosen you up for next time.5. Ask questions. If this is your first, second or even third time spinning, don’t be afraid to ask

the spinning instructor questions. Instructors can help you figure out the best seated position for you on your bike, including how far your knees should ex-tend during a cycle rotation and even how to adjust the handlebars for workout comfort. Instructors want you to have fun and have a great workout, so take advantage of their expertise.

Class rules:When you arrive at a spinning class you’ll choose or be assigned to a bike. It’s

a good idea to arrive a few minutes early so you can set yours up properly. If it’s your first class, let the instructor know so he or she can keep an eye on you.

History of Father ChristmasFather Christmas is the name used in many English-speaking coun-

tries outside the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand for a figure associated with Christmas. A similar figure with the same name (in other languages) exists in several other countries, including France (Père Noël), Spain (Papá Noel, Padre Noel), almost all Hispanic South America (Papá Noel), Brazil (Papai Noel), Portugal (Pai Natal), Italy(Babbo Natale), Armenia (Kaghand Papik), India (Christmas Father), Andorra (Pare Noel), Romania (Moş Crăciun) and Turkey (Noel Baba) .

In past centuries, the English Father Christmas was also known as Old Father Christmas, Sir Christmas, and Lord Christmas. Father Christmas is said to wear (these days) a bright red suit, but in Victorian and Tudor times he wore a bright green suit.

Father Christmas typified the spirit of good cheer at Christmas, but was neither a gift bringer nor particularly associated with children. A traditional figure in English folklore, Father Christmas is identified with the old belief in the Old English godWoden.

In the English-speaking world, the character called “Father Christmas” influenced the development in the United States of Santa Claus, and in the United Kingdom and elsewhere, most people now consider them to be interchangeable. However, although “Father Christmas” and “Santa Claus” have for most practical purposes been merged, histori-cally the characters have different origins and are not identical. Father Christmas dates back at least as far as the 17th century in Britain, and pictures of him survive from that era, portraying him as a well-nour-ished bearded man dressed in a long green fur-lined robe.

Although originally associated with adult feasting and drinking, since the Victorian era, Father Christmas has gradually merged with the pre-modern gift giver St Nicholas (Dutch Sinterklaas, hence Santa Claus) and associated folklore.

Traditionally, Father Christmas comes down the chimney to put presents under the Christmas tree or in children’s rooms, in their stock-ings. Some families leave a glass of sherry or mulled wine, mince pies, biscuits, or chocolate and a carrot for his reindeer near the stocking(s) as a present for him. In modern homes without chimneys he uses alternative means to enter the home. In some homes children write Christmas lists (of wished-for presents) and send them up the chimney or post them.

Father Christmas is often said to reside at the North Pole or less com-monly, in the mountains of Korvatunturi in Lapland, Finland.

THE SHOWREEL MOVIE REVIEW

BY SAJEN

Hiccup is a local band in the midst of the Vaal Triangle. An incredible musical ‘cult’ if I may add. Not in a bad sense, a ‘cult’ in such a way that when you have heard their music, you will forever be hooked. If you do have the guts to be intrigued, check out Hiccups music video, freak your mind, on you tube. But be warned this music video will freak your mind. Hiccup represents exactly what the name says. The members of Hiccup’s philosophy is that nothing in life runs smooth, there will always be a hiccup or two along the way. So even just by knowing the meaning of the name of this band, you can see they are truly inspirational. They do still do gigs in the Vaal triangle, sometimes as a two man band, and in bigger venues, the full band. Both shows are amazing, Hiccup still does some cover songs, to keep up the good vibes of a pub, they do some of the well known oldies music and some new age. They would normally play about two to four of their own songs, depending on what the crowd wants. They are in the music scene only because they love to se their mu-sical abilities please their fans. This band is planning on recording soon, and releasing an album at the end of the year or early in 2013, if we all do survive 2012. Hiccup does travel around a lot here in Gauteng, but they are planning to extend their musical map towards Cape Town. So we do hope for the best for Hiccup and we will stand proud behind our local band boys. If you find that you may want to have an obsession with this band, go like their page on face book ‘Hiccup’ and stalk them as much as you want. Good luck to Hiccup and we hope they remember the Vaal when they become famous.

Hiccup - the name says it all

The Amazing Spiderman 7/10Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he

is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy, and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance - leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr Curt Connors, his father’s former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero. This is the second reboot of the Spider-man franchise, with the first Spiderman movie being released in the 1970s, entitled “The Amazing Spiderman”, then came along Toby Maguire in Sam Raimi’s trilogy and destroyed the character but however was still extremely popular. The new “Amazing Spiderman” is more true to the com-ics and sees Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) portraying a more convincing Peter Parker. The new cast consisting of Michael Sheen, Rhys Ifan and Emma Stone brings an elegancy that the previous over the top films lacked. I highly recommend this film for the whole family, although The Lizard may be abit too scary for the younger ones.

Madagascar 3: Europe’s most wanted 7/10Alex, Marty, Gloria and Melman are still trying to get back to the Big Apple and their beloved

Central Park zoo, but first they need to find the penguins. When they travel to Monte Carlo, they attract the attention of Animal Control after gate crashing a party and are joined by the pen-guins, King Julian and Co., and the monkeys. How do a lion, zebra, hippo, giraffe, four penguins, two monkeys, three lemurs travel through Europe without attracting attention and get back to New York? They join a travelling circus. Their attempts to get back to New York are consistently hampered by the Captain of Animal Control who wants to make Alex part of her collection. Once they make it back to New York Marty, Alex, Gloria and Melman realize that they want to be part of the travelling circus. So many times it seems like they suck the life out of these animated movies by squeezing out another sequel and if Madagascar 2 was anything to go by then the third instalment would of been pathetic, but it was not. Surprisingly M3 was an extremely enjoyable film with a touching storyline about accepting your past and embracing your future and that it doesn’t matter where you are as long as you are with loved ones. Kids will thoroughly enjoy this film, best to try and get the 3D Blu-Ray as the Visual effects are impressive and will mesmerize the young ones.

With the release of a new Silent Hill movie, I thought it appropriate to do a little something on an old classic....um....no pun intended on the game play, graphics and sound either, but now you get to experience all the hor-ror in HD, which makes it very cool!

The Silent Hill HD collection is basically Silent Hill 2 and 3 re-released for the modern day gaming console, but be warned, it runs like your playing on your old console from 10 years back when we had no wireless control-lers – NOW that’s horror!

Here’s a quick overview (thanks Wikipedia):SILENT HILL 2: You are back to the town of Silent Hill as James, a man

who lost his wife several years earlier. One day, he receives a letter from his dead wife telling him to come back to Silent Hill, but what he finds there when he returns is nothing short of horrifying.

SILENT HILL 3: The series’ trademark brand of psychological horror and terrifying game play continues. As a teenage girl named Heather(who sounds like an old psychotic grand mother), players must explore and unravel the mysterious connection between the god-forsaken town and her inner fears.

Little of what makes Silent Hill HD Collection excellent has anything to do with its enhancements. Slight improvements certainly help refresh Silent Hill 2 and 3 visually, and the new voice recordings sound far more human than the laughable original acting apart from the voices them-selves. Really, the best thing about this re-release is what hasn’t changed. I mean think about it Silent Hill is still one of the scariest games EVER! I dare you to play it alone with all the lights off at 3am...... The puzzles are good and challenging, the camera angles get a bit weird and the fact that the controller vibrates like a heartbeat (going thump-thump or freaking out, depending on where you are and what your busy with) make the games challenging and certainly a trip down memory lane – once you look past the one or two clunky bits.

The game is definitely for fans of the survival/horror genre and for fans who are looking for like an “upgraded” version of the game to fill out their collection. Be warned – you start playing and the next thing you know, you have to go to work.....bleh!

The Rating for the game is M for Mature(because gamers are mature people - apparently) and the game contains: Blood, gore, intense violence, sexual themes and strong language

The Silent Hill HD Collection is an awesome Christmas gift and is available at BT Games on all relevant platforms. So get it while it’s fresh.....unlike the zombies.
