Happy New Year. I am sure that 2014 will be an exciting year for civil engineers in the Yorkshire and Humber Region.

We have a full programme of events this year starting with an evening meeting 'Employment/Skills and Apprenticeships' at Leeds Metropolitan University on 5 February, presented by Mark Scott. Mark is leading apprenticeship initiatives in the region and also developed and manages the innovative employment and skills scheme for the YORhub frameworks. I am looking forward to the meeting and hope you can join me, please book via the ICE website.

The Regional Advisory Board (RAB) has had a busy few months responding to the State of the Nation and HS2 consultations. I was a little disappointed at the level of responses from members, but thanks to those who

took the time to give us your views. The RAB recently met with the ICE HS2 panel to ensure the Region’s views were thoroughly communicated. Many thanks to the RAB for their continued hard work on our behalf.

I am delighted to report that we shortlisted 20 projects for the Centenary and Smeaton Awards. This was my first year as a judge, and I was very impressed by the range of skills and professionalism within our Region. I do hope you can join me on 7 March at the Gala Dinner Dance at The Majestic Hotel, Harrogate, when we will announce the winners.

All the best for 2014.

Do you think you are on an ICE training scheme?

In our travels around the region, we sometimes come across trainees who think that they have an ICE training agreement and find to their horror that they haven’t. Occasionally, this doesn’t come to light until the completion of their training. Now might be a good time to check if you are under agreement or not.

So, how do you check? Whether you applied online or sent in a paper copy of ICE 3142 'Training Agreement Application Form', you should have received an email from ICE confirming that your agreement has been registered and you should have your personal ICE 3144 'Annual Training Review and Completion Certificate'. If you have, you are under agreement. So what if I haven’t? The first thing to do is check with the person who you think is your Supervising Civil Engineer (SCE) to make sure that there isn’t paperwork lurking on desks that should have been sent off. Also check with whoever organises payment by your organisation; your form might be stuck there. If you still have doubts, please check with your Membership Development Office (MDO) who will be able to access your ICE record.

If you discover that you don’t have a training agreement, don’t panic! You may have been diligently training under the supervision of a registered SCE, following your employer’s ICE-approved training

scheme. This will have entailed an initial briefing and annual appraisals by your SCE, with an ICE 3144 being added to on each occasion, and regular reviews of your development, which may have been delegated by your SCE (to a Delegated Engineer). Talk to your MDO who will help to regularise the situation.

If you haven’t been following the requirements of your training scheme, it is probably time to find out what options you have now. Contact your MDO and perhaps book an appointment at a Membership Surgery so that we can advise on the best way forward for you personally.

To contact any of our Membership Development Officers, please email e: [email protected] or call t: +44 (0)114 232 5044 and well will put you in touch with the right person.

Lecture Series 2014

Did you know that £110M is being invested in Yorkshire’s coastline? A partnership approach has been taken between East Riding of Yorkshire Council, the Environment Agency, North Yorkshire County Council, Scarborough Borough Council, Welcome to Yorkshire, and Yorkshire Water to ensure that Yorkshire’s beaches have the best chance of reaching the highest quality standards set by the revised Bathing Water Directive (rBWD).

The partnership was set up in 2010 with site work due for completion this year - the aim of the partnership is to improve the quality of bathing water at Yorkshire’s 20 designated beaches. The Graduate and Student Lecture Series this year will be presented by Yorkshire Water and their partners, and they will be discussing the need for investment and improvements that have been made in the Scarborough and Bridlington areas.

The lectures will focus on the scale of the engineering and the innovation and delivery techniques utilised to deliver efficiency. The site visit will focus on the planning involved to meet the tight timescales and the exemplary health and safety culture. A great opportunity to learn about projects in your region and to help meet the learning requirements of the Development Objectives. Lectures will take place on 4, 11 and 18 February at 18.30 at The Bar Convent in York, with a site visit to Bridlington taking place on the afternoon of the 25 February. Everyone is welcome to attend, please visit: ice.org.uk/yandh/LectureSeries2014 to book online. For further details please contact Catherine Minore: [email protected]

STEM in Action at the KC Stadium, HullA successful two-day event saw eight schools and over 200 students take part in the sessions, led by four Ambassadors. The Ambassadors introduced themselves and their civil engineering jobs, after which the students undertook the Tower Challenge (pictured above).

Engineering principles were discussed for each of the designs the students came up with, and the sessions concluded with an opportunity for general Q&A.

Ambassador Mohammad Jariwala of WSP said: “I am very passionate about helping to ‘engineer’ the future generations and inspire them to work in STEM related fi elds. This can be really hard as often people don’t understand the breadth or variety of careers available which is why attending events such as these are so important.”

G4C Thinking Outside the BoxWhilst the Regional Education Team's focus is usually on pre-19s, in some cases they can get involved with older students. The team were asked by G4C Construction Excellence to provide an activity for their event at Sheffi eld Hallam University. Students were asked if they could solve problems, whether they encountered challenges, and if they could 'think outside the box'.

The Tower Challenge was used, introducing restrictions on builds such as cost of blocks and layout of foundations, in order to make the activity more challenging for the students. 24 university students attended and we received positive feedback from the organisers.

National Science & Engineering Week — 14-23 March 2014The RET are looking forward to providing another fun-packed week of activities as part of NSEW 2014.

The team will be at the National Railway Museum (NRM) in York for three days delivering the Tower Challenge, and are also hoping to deliver their new K’Nex Renewable Energy Challenge during the week - in South and West Yorkshire. Details of these events will be published in enews.

Nationally schools are encouraged to use this week as an opportunity to get students to think about careers in science and engineering. This complements our activities well, and as a result we often have groups of motivated and enthusiastic students. Please consider getting involved.

Engineering Experience DayWe successfully held our third Engineering Experience Day in November at the NRM. This day-long event saw 55 students from four schools undertake fi ve activities with a disaster relief theme - building a bridge, erecting shelters, constructing a medical centre, supplying water and building a tower to support communications equipment. The tasks were placed in the context of providing relief to those affected by a hurricane in a remote area of Honduras, and provided a hands-on insight into the role civil engineers play in disaster relief situations and in the built environment around us. Our thanks go to the NRM, to Ambassadors Matthew Brayfi eld, Lynden Cable, Julian Carter, Sarah Coote, Brenda Marsh and Katherine Speyer for delivering the activities, and to Chris Bevington for organising the event.
