The 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup will be the tenth Cricket World Cup and will be hosted by three South Asian Test cricket playing countries: India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. It will be Bangladesh’s fi rst time co-hosting a Cricket World Cup. The World Cup will use cricket’s One Day International format, with fourteen national cricket teams scheduled to compete. The World Cup will take place between February and early April 2011, with the fi rst match to be played on 19 February 2011 with co-hosts India and Bangladesh facing off at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.

The World Cup was also to be co-hosted by Pakistan, but in the wake of the 2009 attack on the Sri Lanka national cricket team in Lahore, the capital of the Pakistani province of Punjab, the International Cricket Council (ICC) were forced to strip Pakistan of its hosting rights. The headquarters of the organising committee were originally situated in Lahore, but have now been shifted to Mumbai. Pakistan was supposed to hold 14 matches, including one semi-fi nal. Eight of Pakistan’s matches have been awarded to India, four to Sri Lanka and two to Bangladesh. Format

Late in 2007, the four host nations agreed upon a revised format for the 2011 World Cup, in which 14 teams will participate instead of 16. The fi rst round of the tournament will be a round-robin similar to the one held in South Africa in the 2003 edition in which the 14 teams are divided into 2 groups of 7 teams each. The 7 teams play each other once with the top four from each group qualifying for the quarter-fi nals. The format ensures that each team gets to play a minimum of six matches even if they are ruled out of the tournament due to early defeats. One semi-fi nal of the tournament was offi cially handed over to India, after Pakistan were stripped of its rights to host the tournament.

QualificationAs per ICC regulations, all 10 full members automatically qualify for the World Cup, including Zimbabwe who have given up their test playing status until the standard of their team improves.

The ICC also organised a qualifying tournament in South Africa to determine which Associate teams would participate in 2011 event. Ireland who had been the best performing Associate nation since the last World Cup, won the tournament, beating Canada in the final. The Netherlands and Kenya also qualified by virtue of finishing third and fourth respectively.

Established in 1864, the world-famous ground is the country’s biggest cricket venue and had initially a seating capacity of 120,000 before renovations reduced it to its current capacity of 90,000. It hosted its first Test in 1934 between India and England, and the first ODI was played here between India and Pakistan in 1987.

1974, the stadium is located less than a mile away from Brabourne Stadium. Its seaside proximity assists swing bowlers during the early part of each day. It is currently being rebuilt ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011.The first Test in the ground was played in January 1975 between India and West Indies. The venue has played host to ICC Cricket World Cup 1987 and 1996.

This stadium, with a seating capacity of 45,000, was established in 2008 and boasts some of the best facilities in the country for players, spectators and media. Built over 35-acres of land, the venue is located 20 kilometres from the city center.

Established in 1986, the venue, named after former Sri Lanka president Ranasinghe Premadasa, was earlier named Khettarama Stadium. It is the biggest stadium in the country and was built on swampland previously used by monks ferrying across to the Khettarama temple adjacent to the stadium.

Established in 2006, the venue was named afterAK Fazlul Haque - the country’srenowned leader and has a seating capacity of 25,000. The stadium will host the opening ceremony of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011.The first official match played here was the ODI between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe in December 2008 and the ground was granted as Test venue status in 2007.

Established in 1883, the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium, formerly known as Willingdon Pavilion, is run by Delhi & Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) and is named after Feroz Shah Tughlaq of the Tughlaq dynasty from the 14th century. It held its first official match on November 10, 1948 between India and West Indies. The stadium with a seating capacity of 48,000 has also hosted the 1987 and 1996 ICC Cricket World Cups.

The 30,000-seat venue was established in 1993, and was transformed from a swamp with deep ravines into one of India’s top sporting venues in the space of just two years. The first official match played here was an ODI between India and South Africa in November 1993. It was the venue for the thrilling ICC CWC 1996 semi-final in 1996 when Australia beat the West Indies by five runs.

Established in 1969, the venue was originally named as Karnataka State Cricket Association Stadium and eventually renamed after M Chinnaswamy, who was the president of the Indian board from 1977 until 1980.The stadium was given Test status in 1974-75 and hosted West Indies in the opening match, although the stadium was only half-built. That match was also the debut of two West Indian greats, Gordon Greenidge and Viv Richards.

The venue is also known as Chittagong Divsional Stadium and previously known as Bir Shrestha Shahid Ruhul Amin Stadium. Situated about half-an-hour outside the city centre, the stadium was one of the five purpose-built cricket grounds established in the run-up to the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2004.

The Australian cricket team is the national men’s cricket team of Australia. It is the joint oldest team in Test cricket, having played in the first Test match in 1877 (defeating England by 45 runs.As of 20 January 2010, the Australian team has played 718 Test matches, winning 51.87%, losing 20.87% and drawing 26.98% of its games.It has a winning record against every other Test nation.The Australian national cricket team has also led the ICC Test Championship table for the majority of the time since the creation of the ICC Test table system in January 2001. The South Africans did lead this table for a brief period from January to May 2003[citation needed], before Australia resumed the first position on the table. Australia has since dropped down to fifth in the Test rankings (as of 24 November 2010).

Australia have made six World Cup final appearances and have won the World Cup four

times in total; 1987 Cricket World Cup, 1999 Cricket World Cup, 2003 Cricket World Cup & 2007 Cricket World Cup. Australia have also won the ICC Champions Trophy twice in 2006 and in 2009 making them the first and the only team to become back to back winners in the Champions Trophy tournaments. Australia also have been the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup champions in 1988, 2002 and 2010. Australia were runners-up in the ICC World Twenty20 in 2010 (which was won by England).

As of 28 April 2007 they are undefeated in 29 consecutive World Cup matches. They have led the ICC One-Day International Championship table from its inception through to 18 February 2007[citation needed], and then again from 7 April 2007 until 30 January 2009.[citation needed] In 2002, they were named World Team of the Year at the Laureus World Sports Awards in recognition of their world record sequence of Test match victories.

World Cup tracker :This is Rizwan Cheema’s fi rst World Cup.He hasn’t played too many matches against full-member countries, but he has made the most of his opportunities, hitting the likes Shoaib Akhtar, Ajantha Mendis and Jerome Taylor for sixes. Can be called upon to bowl wicket-to-wicket military medium stuff.Strengths: Absolutely fearless, with a desire to dominate top-level bowlers. Favours the leg-side boundary, and if the ball is in his arc, it will sail over the ropes.

The Canada cricket team is the national cricket team representing Canada in men’s international competition. It is run by Cricket Canada.While Canada is not sanctioned to play Test matches, the team does take part in One Day International matches and also in first-class games (in the ICC Intercontinental Cup) against other non-Test-playing opposition, with the rivalry against the United States cricket team being as strong in cricket as it is in other team sports. The match between these two nations is in fact the oldest international fixture in cricket, having first been played in 1844.Canadian cricket has tended to take a lower profile than most other sports, and the team tends to be composed of expatriates from more successful cricketing nations either trying to achieve a level of international experience or having been deemed too old for their respective national teams. The 2003 World Cup squad, for example, contained players born in Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan

and the West Indies.Perhaps the most successful exponent of Canadian cricket has been all-rounder John Davison. Davison was born in Canada but played club and — occasionally — first class cricket in Australia, achieving a reputation as something of a journeyman. Taking advantage of his Canadian birth, he became a regular in the national squad. At the 2003 World Cup, Davison hit the fastest century in tournament history against the West Indies in what was ultimately a losing cause. One year later, in the ICC Intercontinental Cup against the USA, he proved the difference between the two

sides taking 17 wickets for 137 runs (the best haul in first-class cricket since England’s Jim Laker took 19 wickets in 1956) as well as scoring 84 runs of his own.

World Cup tracker : Shahid Afridi has been a part of three World Cups, but averages 11 with the bat and nearly 40 with the ball.Strengths: Good in the fi eld, excellent with the ball and insane with the bat, Afridi is not short of strengths. Above all, he just has something in him that often takes a whole team, a whole game along with him. Forget the debate over whether Shahid Afridi will or should be captain of the ODI side; he remains the side’s most talismanic player, capable of changing any game in a trice. Over the years, it is Afridi’s leg-spin that has held him in better stead, providing not only a vital choke during the middle overs, but a serious wicket-taking threat.

World Cup tracker :The 1999 World Cup was Shoaib at his very best; lean, athletic, super-fast and pumped up there was no better sight through the tournament. He was instrumental in taking Pakistan to the fi nal with 16 wickets. He picked up wickets in 2003, but the magic had long gone by then and he missed the 2007 tournament with what was ostensibly a knee injury, but widely thought to be a fallout of the doping scandal in the months before that tournament.Strengths: Pace, new ball outswing, old ball reverse and a killer slower one; a fi t and on song Shoaib has always been a rounded fast bowler.

The Pakistan National Cricket Team is an International cricket team representing Pakistan. It is administrated by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Pakistan is a member of the International Cricket Council and has professional teams representing in Test cricket, One Day International and Twenty20 matches.Pakistan are the ICC Cricket World Cup 1992 champions, ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup champions twice in 2004 and in 2006 making them the first and the only team to become back to back champions in the U-19 Cricket World Cup tournaments and they are also the ICC World Twenty20 2009 champions. Pakistan have been semi finalist 3 times in the ICC Champions Trophy in 2000, 2004 and 2009.After gaining independence from the British Empire in 1947, Pakistan cricket was played before the first Pakistan national team was granted test match playing status. Documentation and archives show that during the 18th century, cricket was played on the western part of

India and many successful Indian cricketers played for the English cricket team. It was not until 28 July 1952 that Pakistan started playing test match cricket. Their first match took place in Delhi against India on October of the same year. Their first international tour was to England during 1954. Over the half century, Pakistan has become one of the most challenging and unpredictable teams in the world, the team won the 1992 Cricket World Cup and were runners up in the 1999 Cricket World Cup. The country

has produced several world-class players such as Fazal Mahmood, Hanif Mohammad, Sarfaraz Nawaz, Mushtaq Mohammad, Imran Khan, Javed Miandad, Abdul Qadir, Wasim Akram, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Saeed Anwar, Waqar Younis, Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan.As of October 2007, the Pakistani team has played 332 Test matches, winning 30.29%, losing 26.76% and drawing 42.94% of its games.

World Cup tracker : Has appeared in every one of Kenya’s World Cup matches and scored 65 against India in their fi rst game in 1996. A big-occasion player, seven of his eight fi fties have come against Full Member countries, including three against India. Oddly, the 2003 campaign was his least successful, although as captain he led his team to the semi-fi nals.Strengths: Big, powerful and imposing, Tikolo is the middle-order rock around which most of Kenya’s successes have been built. His fl at offspin lacks variety but is perfectly suited to the one-day game.

World Cup tracker :Like Tikolo, a veteran of all of Kenya’s four World Cup campaigns, his best return was 4 for 28 against Canada at Cape Town en route to the 2003 semi-fi nal, but overall has 20 wickets in as many games; with the bat he has been remarkably consistent, scoring 361 at 25.78 without once passing fi fty. The Kenya national cricket team is the team that represents the country of Kenya in international cricket matches. They are considered one of the strongest of the associate member nations of the International Cricket Council, especially since reaching the semi-final of the 2003 Cricket World Cup. They currently have One Day International status until 2013.Kenya Cricket has aquired an international reputation, after achieving some remarkable successes.The Kenyan national cricket team upsets many countries, even though Kenyan cricket has faced several crises recently.Kenyan international cricket took off in 1951 with the matches against Uganda and Tanzania (then Tanganyika). Later, these 3 countries joined to form the East Africa cricket team. Kenya was always considered the strongest among them and in 1981 it broke off and joined the ICC as an associate member in it’s own right.

In 2003, Kenya drew international attention when it reached the semi-final of the Cricket World Cup. Among the ‘associate member nations’ of the International Cricket Council (ICC), Kenya is seen as one of the strongest nations. (The ICC has accepted 10 full member nations, 32 associate member nations and 55 affiliate members, which are third class so to say.) In 1996, Kenya performed very well at the Cricket World Cup and the country was given full ODI status. However, the finest moment of Kenyan cricket up to now was the Cricket World Cup of 2003 in South Africa. By defeating Canada, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, among others, Kenya qualified for the Super Six stage.

This way the country became the first non-test nation to get beyond the first round of the Cricket World Cup. By defeating Zimbabwe it then qualified for the semi-final (which it lost to India). Kenya cricket is working to come back. The strikes ended and Kenya again entered the semi-finals of the Intercontinental Cup.

Famous Kenyan cricket players are Steve Tikolo, Martin Suji, David Obuya and Thomas Odoyo.

Zimbabwe Cricket has remained one of the most controversial boards in cricketing history.[citation needed] Especially during the early 2000s when the majority of the team quit because of “the death of democracy in Zimbabwe caused by Robert Mugabe This meant a much more inexperienced side was used which resulted in Zimbabwe being stripped of their Test status. However by the late 2000s especially after 2009 when Zimbabwe beat Australia in the 2009 ICC World Twenty20 group stages resulted in the ICC re-considering its decision. In a meeting it was decided that after the 2011 Cricket World Cup Zimbabwe would return to playing Test cricket.As part of the plans

to help to rehabilitate the team into the test arena Zimbabwe cricket announced major upgrades to the Harare Sports Club and the Multare Sports Club. Also ZC signed a three-year deal with Reebok worth $1mn. The deal will see Reebok sponsor the Domestic competitions and make the kits of the Zimbabwean national cricket team

The Bangladesh national cricket team, also known as “The Tigers”, is a national cricket team representing Bangladesh. The team is administered by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Bangladesh is a full member of the International Cricket Council with Test and One Day International status. It played its first Test match in 2000 against India in Dhaka, becoming the tenth Test cricket playing nation.Bangladesh’s first official foray into international cricket came in the 1979 ICC Trophy in England, leaving the tournament with 2 wins and 2 defeats. Seven years later, on 31 March 1986, Bangladesh played in its first One Day International match against Pakistan in the 1986 Asia Cup. Cricket has gradually become very popular in urban areas of the country. Although football was the most popular game for a long time, cricket gained momentum and soon surpassed football. Especially after Bangladesh won the ICC Trophy in Malaysia in 1997. By winning the ICC trophy, the Tigers had qualified for

the 1999 Cricket World Cup for the first time, where they beat Pakistan creating one of the biggest upsets in their cricketing history. In 1997, Bangladesh became a regular ICC member with the right to play One Day Internationals. It attained the status of a Test playing country on 26 June 2000.As of May 2010, Bangladesh have played in 68 Tests, winning only 3. Their first victory was against Zimbabwe and the other two against a West Indian team crippled by a players’ strike. They have lost 57

oftheir matches, and 33 of these by an innings. Bangladesh’s performance has led to repeated calls for them to lose their Test status. Recently however, under the guidance of coach Jamie Siddons Bangladesh has been improving their test match performances. In the one day form of the game Bangladesh has performed a lot better. They have managed to defeat all the Test playing nations at least once. The performance of the Tigers in 2010 has also shown a gradual improvement as a Test match and ODI side.

The England cricket team (Welsh: Tîm criced Lloegr) is a cricket team which represents England and Wales. Since 1 January 1997 it has been governed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), having been previously governed by Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) from 1903 until the end of 1996. England and Australia were the first teams to be granted Test status on 15 March 1877 and they gained full membership to the International Cricket Council (ICC) on 15 June 1909. England and Australia also took part in the first One Day International (ODI) on 5 January 1971. Indian cricket team is the national cricket team of India. Governed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), it is a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) with Test and One Day International (ODI) status.The Indian cricket team is currently ranked first (as of 15 October 2010) by the ICC in Tests and second (as of 15 October 2010) in ODIs. As of October 2010, the Indian team has played 445 Test matches, winning 108, losing 138 and drawing 198 of its games, with 1 match ending in a tie. Although cricket was introduced to India by European merchant sailors in the 18th-century and the first cricket club in India was established in Calcutta in 1792, India’s national cricket team didn’t play their first Test match until 25 June 1932 at Lord’s. In their first fifty years of international cricket, India proved weaker than Australia and England, winning only 35 of the 196 test matches.

The team, however, gained strength near the end of the 1970s with the emergence of players such as Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Mohammed Azharuddin and the Indian spin quartet - Erapalli Prasanna and Srinivas Venkataraghavan (both off spinners), Bhagwat Chandrasekhar (a leg spinner), and Bishen Singh Bedi (a left-arm spinner). Traditionally much stronger at home than abroad, the Indian team has improved its overseas form since the start of the 21st century. It won the Cricket World Cup in 1983 and was runners-

The Ireland cricket team is the cricket team representing all of Ireland. Because of political difficulties, the Irish Cricket Union (ICU) was not elected to the International Cricket Council (ICC) until 1993, and qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 2007. The Irish Cricket Union is the governing body of Irish cricket. The Irish cricket team is an amateur one, with players forced to take time away from their full-time jobs to represent their country in cricket. Efforts have been made to professionalise the team although funding has been a difficulty. Despite the challenging financial environment, Cricket Ireland[3] has announced 13.01.2010 additional sponsorship funding to increase from two to six the number of full time professional players with partial funding for a further four county players.[4]The first match played by an Irish team was in 1855. Since then, Ireland have gained a reputation for giant-killing. Ireland played their first One Day International (ODI) in

2006 against England. Since then, they have gone on to play 39 ODIs, resulting in 16 victories, 19 defeats, 3 no results, and 1 tie.[5] Ireland’s greatest cricketing success to date was in the 2007 Cricket World Cup, where they achieved a tie against Zimbabwe and victories over Pakistan and Bangladesh, and ended the tournament ranked 10th overall in the official ICC rankings above Zimbabwe and Kenya.[6]Ireland take part in the ICC Trophy, the European Cricket Championship (which they have won three times and hold the title of European champions), and the ICC Intercontinental Cup, which they have won consecutively three times since 2005 and are the current holders. The team also competes in the Friends Provident Trophy against English counties. Ireland is an Associate member of the ICC; Associates are the next level of team

Over the last couple of years, though, he has proved he has the substance to match the style, with an ODI strike rate in the 90s, an average of almost 60.Strengths: A refi ned array of shots allow him to score boundaries all around the ground, without being a bludgeoner. A good player of spin, Amla’s array of wristy shots will come in handy on the subcontinent. His serenity at the crease stands him in good stead for pressure situations.

The engine of South Africa’s attack, Dale Steyn is quick - regularly clocking between 145km/hr and 150km/hr - aggressive, prides himself on precision and has the ability to swing the ball both ways in all conditions. These attributes make him the premier strike bowler in the side even though he has yet to earn his 50th ODI cap. Steyn is no bunny with that bat and can bludgeon the ball or hang around at the crease if needed. Strengths: Devastating accuracy coupled with the ability to swing the ball both ways. His opening partnership with Morne Morkel is thought to be one of the most dangerous in world cricket.

World Cup tracker :Born in South Africa, the 22-year-old Bradley Kruger is a bright fast-bowling prospect in the Netherlands’ ranks. His promise has already earned him a place on Northamptonshire’s books and he is part of the academy set-up in Leeds/Bradford MCCU. That said, he still has some way to develop before becoming a regular threat. His experience for Netherlands in the CB40 last summer proved tough and he was dealt a severe lesson by Ireland’s batsman, as his seven wicketless overs cost 43.Strengths: Strongly built and a fairly capable batsman, it’s no surprise he looks up to Andrew Flintoff. He might have some way to go but his academy team-mates have already christened him ‘Freddie’.

World Cup tracker : Pollard played only one match in the 2007 World Cup, against South Africa in the Super Eights.He didn’t have a memorable game, conceding 20 off three overs and scoring 10 off 17 balls.Strengths: Ability to strike length deliveries over long-on and be an impact player down the order. Kieron Pollard is a violent destroyer of attacks in the Twenty20s that he plays for his various clubs, but he has rarely been able to step up his game while playing for West Indies. Like most hitters, his game is simple: he likes to loft as straight as possible and has a mean pull shot. Often, for West Indies, he has batted way down the order and has not been able to produce his best.

World Cup tracker :The 2011 World Cup is his, fi rst. Any bowler who can regularly send down six consecutive 150kph rockets has to be respected, whatever be the format of the match. His pace makes him a genuine wicket-taker and a matchwinner in ODIs. Roach declared himself on international circuit with a 146 kph bouncer that crashed into Ricky Ponting’s left elbow. Strengths: The skill to bowl at real pace and the ability to extract bounce from a length. Unlike a few other fast bowlers who can tend to bowl too short, he likes to hit the full length when in rhythm and has a good yorker.
