ICABers—Lets meet 14

ICAB Voice was awarded the Capti-vating Communique award for 2012-2013 and 2011-2012. Further, ICAB Voice ennobled the Best Newsletter award in Division A for 2012-2013. Previously, ICAB Voice was adjudged “Second Best” in District 79 in 2008-09 and it was awarded fifth place during 2007-08.

Congratulations!!! Champions!!!

From the President’s Desk

Dear Toastmasters, The New Year brought with it a number of new Resolutions. The Club had its contest held at the India Club. While it was heartening to find all our senior members partici-pating and performing, none of the new members, with the exception of TM Vinod An-and were present to witness and learn from this great opportunity.

Hearty Congratulations to all the winners. The winners placed first will represent the Club at the Area Contest on March 21, 2014. I wish them all the very best. TM Vinod Anand deserves a special thanks and appreciation for his initiative to partici-pate in the Humorous Speech and Table Topics contest. For a new member, having just completed his second speech at club level and to participate in the contest shows the character of the Member. He deserves a “standing ovation” as we say it at the Club. Hats off to you, Vinod. The contest was a great occasion and all those present benefitted from it. Our VP Edu-cation also deserves a special thanks for organizing the event so efficiently. We have seen in the past, contestants complaining about the judgment after the re-sults were out. But this was one contest when the deserving ones came out winners and hence no drooping faces. Each participant put his best and it was a feast for the eyes and ears when masters of the game performed, enthralling the small crowd we had. Throughout I was feeling sad and sorry for those who missed the great event. I would also like to thank all those who spared their Fridays to be the Judges in the event. I am sure you all benefitted from the Loy Machedo event organized by our Area, led by our own leader, TM Meenakshi Sundaram. I once again wish all our contest winners all the very best in the Area contest. God

Bless us all!!

The club contest was certainly the highlight of the month. This was well summarized in the President’s message and in the pages that follow. Much admired TM Raunaq stole the show, winning two of the four contests. Our best wishes are with the three winners TM Raunaq, TM Shaukat & TM Dilip for the next con-test level. Many new joinees were strangely missing in the club contests, even as part of the audience-this I would consider to be a missed opportunity. Loy Machedo in Bahrain was another highlight of the month, thanks to our Area Governor TM Meenakshi Sundaram. Loy’s insights and priceless secrets were enlightening and thought provoking, his style was inter-active and his personality bold and frank-a straight shooter. His theory was seamlessly supported with real-life examples. A treat to watch – wish we have more of such presentations and educational sessions. The Krypostar contest earlier in the month had two contestants from our club, TM Karthik and TM Shaukat-better luck to both of them next time. Our President Gopal encouraged us to update the CL manual and facilitated the process with a CL Project Matrix. Though I am personally possibly just half way through the CL requirements, implementing the sug-gestion really helped me in providing a road map for myself for the future role plays. I now have a better idea of what I will do and in what sequence. I encour-age all of those who haven't yet, to update the CL manual and the CL Project matrix. Haha, haha, haha, ha, ha, ha. We went crazy laughing at the 22nd January meeting, thanks to TM Chinnaswamy informing us about “Laughter Yoga”. You will notice pictures on this and the following page, to know what I mean. Ex-VPPR and Senior member TM Anil Bhatta left dur-ing the month for better prospects in India and to join his family. We once again wish him the very best of luck in his new initiative. I hope he keeps in close con-tact with his friends and mentors.

The club members are in constant informal communi-cation through the ICAB Group on Whatsapp which is becoming an extremely convenient communication tool. It also increases bonding between members. I would encourage all members, old and new, to join this group. Last but not the least, we now have an Assistant Editor TM Vinod Anand who has taken the initiative to assist in the publication of this issue. We wish him the very best to take on the Editors role in the months ahead. Your Editor

TM Mohit

An eventful month to kick-off 2014

From the Editor’s Desk

In response to the December 2013 ICAB VOICE Dear Mohit, Again a masterpiece….Right from President desk, Edi-tor desk to the articles contributed. TM Meenaxi’s en-thusiasm dose was too good as my own personal man-tra always has been nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm. As always our Silver spoon and my lovely mentor startled me with his article title vin-dication and later on explained it fantastically. TM Dilip as always is Akshaypatra from Mahabharata which never gets empty with flood of knowledge and TM So-maskandan’s article once again brought the entire speech which he had done as his project 10 and I was looking for his classic statement 70 per cent rowdy and 30 per cent gentleman which was missing in his article. All and all again a feast for mind and intellect. Best Regards Amit

Sticky Note By TM Raunaq Desai, CC, CL

What is most amazing thing about ""Sticky Note”? It uses an “ineffective” glue with an ordinary square paper to create one of the most popular stationeries in the world. Yes, “ineffective”. One day my young nephew asked me "Uncle can I ask you a question?". As an arrogant Einstein of Common Sense I said “of course. I know every-thing” where can I find a glue which does not stick permanently? Suddenly from Eisenstein of Common Sense I became a Cave Man of Ice Age……I had no answer. I rushed to the super market...while I was literally star gazing over the shelves, a soothsayer came to me... I consider salesmen as sooth-sayers…they know everything...Excuse me, Sir….may I help you…Yes, I am looking for a specific glue….Yes ,yes, we have all kind of glue…super glue…super fast glue..,Perfume glue and invisible glue…I though his mouth was full of glue....thanks but I want a glue which do not stick permanently,…haha…,excuse me, but not one will sell such glue...Its like marriage without an argument. Was I really looking for something impossible? Yes, I couldn’t find it anywhere. It made me realize how obsessed we are with perfection. Right from the childhood we are told that if “you want to be successful you have to be pre-fect”. If you want to be on the most marketable shelf of life, you have to be that super glue firm and irreversible and perfect. What a lie? what a lie? Look at the sticky note and learn. It shows how an ineffective glue can actu-ally be its biggest strength…it is used and reused….found everywhere. We all know that nobody’s perfect but what do we try to do; either try remove the imperfection or hide it. But some imperfection cannot be hidden…I cannot hide the fact I am almost bald. One day I asked my wife, why a beautiful and talented girl like you married a guy with receding hairline when most of the girls will not even look at me. She said that is the precise reason I married you. My imperfection helped me gain her trust. My weakness becomes my strength. In a pack of cards a joker is ineffective on its own. It’s ineffective but when you are the verge of winning a card game and you need just one card to complete a sequence then this joker can become your greatest strength and help you win the game. As individuals we may like the ineffective glue or a book mark but together we can become a great sticky note. If I had an eagle eye i would see everything perfectly, every minute detail…but actually I have an imperfect eye. I can consider it as my strength by choosing what I want to see and what I don’t. My imperfection therefore becomes my strength. Instead of constantly running towards perfection let us also realize that our imperfection can also become our greatest strength. We have to make a right choice. Let’s not consider our imperfection as a liability and run away from it or hide it. Let us consider it as an asset to become “A Sticky note”.

A small kid happily used to play with apple tree and both of them were very happy. Suddenly he stopped playing and tree was sad. After couple of years the kid came and when asked to play by tree he said “I am a boy now and I need money to buy toys….i Cannot play with you”. The tree asked him to take apples and sell it and buy toys and the boy was not to be seen for years…….. This is a story of most of us. The apple tree is like our parents. When we are young we love to play with mom and dad and when we grow up we leave them…...only to come back to them when we need them or when we are in trouble.

I had a rare opportunity of visiting an Old age home in India. It’s a place where the Old par-ents whom their children refuse to take care, are being kept. I was exposed to most sadden-ing, shocking and severe face of human existence. The mood inside was very gloomy. Wrin-

kled faces, drooping bodies. Tired…really tired…By Body…No not at all…Tired by minds…. First time in my life I no-ticed LIVING BEINGS ROAMING around like dead bodies… Every set of eyes were on the doors of old age home ex-pecting that some day their children would come to them and spend time with them … but seemed that for ages they had not seen their children. I had no courage in speaking to them directly to know their sad stories and hence I spoke to the warden. There was an old woman with Parkinson’s. I was surprised to know that she had 5 sons. 5 sons in Indian context and an old woman with Parkinson’s in an old age home... My heart sunk deeper when the warden said that all of them are well placed…this old lady along with her husband had raised 5 sons in a small 500 square feet home …and today 5 sons with approx. 5,000 sq feet under their legs had not even 150 square feet to spare for this apple tree…..how sad…how depressing….... I saw another old uncle limping whose story was equally miserable. This uncle had very lovingly raised his only son with lots of love. After his sons marriage things went awry and this uncle was confined to a locked room. His son used to slide his food, newspaper etc. thru a small opening and old uncles life was just going on….I was utterly shocked to know that he was even not attended properly medically…and once on a request for humanly treatment when the discussion got quite heated his son kicked on his leg….the old uncle’s bones had become so brittle that it broke off with the kick…the son who had taken his first step of life holding his fathers hand made the father unable to walk for rest of his life …the only question which came to my mind was…..are we living among humans ? There were many other sad stories…which were depressing me to the core and incidentally my sight went on a bench, where an elderly couple were sitting hand in hand, seemed very happy, very positive and I gathered courage to speak to them...That old uncle said that they had 2 sons one staying in Delhi and other in Bangalore and since their no son wanted to singly take care of them together, aunty was staying in Delhi and uncle in Bangalore…Uncle asked me “ Son do you know what you crave for most in u r final years”….the togetherness .the company of your soul mate which incidentally my sons did not realize…For months together we could not see each other and we were feeling utterly miserable... One day I called my wife said nothing doing sweetheart, lets take our destiny in our hands….lets be together and fight out the life together in whatever condition we are as we have been doing all these…..and we are here 2gether…. Friends we all are busy in our lives making our lives happy...developing careers..being busy with our own family….But we have our ageing apple tree back home which needs our atten-tion...which needs our togetherness….After my visit to old age home I took an oath to take care of my parents and be with them….and I request all of you my own wonderful people….when u r parents hands are shaking…when your apple tree needs u…. pls do u r bit and be by their side….

I wish I could have a magic wand…which could solve all my problems in whoosh. However, I know it is a myth and not reality. It was Friday 29th November 2013, early morning in the Hotel Ritz Carlton Bahrain the day 1 of the BCICAI Interna-tional Conference, A high profile, prestigious event for BCICAI. A really foggy morning in Bahrain; visibility was mini-mal, one of our important dignitaries had missed his flight, and the conference hall was empty. I was feeling like the father of a bride standing with a garland waiting for the procession of bridegroom. I felt I had inserted my hand in a bee hive. The fear of failure had grasped my imagination. During the two months of preparation for the conference, this feeling had come several times. The challenges that constantly appeared and re-appeared in the organization of the conference intimidated me. The first challenge was to get some high quality speakers. Several rejections and no responses really made me feel low. Then one day one of our members emailed, saying his Uncle, former executive director of the RBI is available for the conference. I could feel someone was holding my hand and telling me, don’t worry, I am here. Few days down the line, past President of ICAI landed in Bahrain for his personal work, he himself was an expert speaker. As I met him and told him about the conference, he immediately gave his consent and also promised to arrange for two eminent speakers. A circle of energy was beginning to form. There were many other jobs, from branding, souvenir, international delegate mobilization, arranging the logistics for the dignitaries etc. etc., I soon realized that the Ex-com had always been part of the circle as well and we all seemed to unconsciously understand the power of unity. But there was one final frontier to be won. Just like you can own the latest model of BMW but unless you have the fuel to run the car, it is only a show piece. For the conference to actually take off we needed the sponsorship and for the event of this size, most expensive five star hotel in Bahrain, 400 delegates, 12 speakers traveling from across the globe, invited guest and delegates, the budget was not small. We all know these times are not easy, businesses have still not recovered from financial crisis. In times of financial crisis the Publicity expense is the first item to knock off from the corporate budget. Honestly speaking, my sleep had gone. I was under constant worry, as Chair-man of the BCICAI Excom, if I am not able to meet the conference budget, the final responsibility will rest on me. As the circle of energy got bigger, the problems, the challenges that were seeming so overpowering or insurmount-able in the beginning for me became smaller and smaller. On that day, after getting the information of missed flight and seeing the empty hall once again the fear of failure had grasped my imagination. On that day this metaphorical circle of energy actually manifested itself physically when all of us in the BCICAI excom held our hands together and said: “As we hold our hands, there is energy flow among us, and this energy is empowering us to achieve the goal we have set for ourselves, i.e. to make this event a grand success.” As the clock touched 8:30 AM on that day, the clouds of anxiety and nervousness started dissipating and just as the sun comes out from the shadow of heavy clouds, the news came of the landing of our dignitary, the members started pouring in, and no one in that conference hall could believe that it was really a Friday morning in Bahrain. BCICAI had one of the most successful events so far. Dear friends, there is a flow of energy in each one of us and as we form the circle of energy that energy flow is compounded and if this energy is directed to achieve any goal, no matter how difficult the goal is, no matter how impossible the goal seems, it becomes really small. On that day I realized that this circle of energy is actually my magic wand. Now I have found my ‘Magic Wand’…have you found yours’.

Till you turn 40… you are active, your body is flexible, you will dance, play football, go trekking…. After that age only then slowly you will start getting ankle sprain, catches etc...If any of you are already 40… welcome to our club.. One day I parked my car in front of the Ayurvedic massage centre and went inside. I had severe pain on my back since tablets like Panadol didn’t give any relief… In the reception I could see lot of men sitting with their wives. All were above 40 waiting for the doctor.. I had to wait for 1 hour and was then let in to see the doctor. The doctor listened to me patiently and explained with a diagram showing the spinal cord of a human being… “ Mr. Sridhar the catch at back is due to friction of bones in your waist.. less fluid at the joints etc.. at least 10 sittings of massage are required. You need full body massage or maybe partial?” “ Well... I have no idea Doctor… already you are saying friction, fluidity and all…. whether its full or partial mas-sage… I am waiting for your message… before I go far massage... Pl advice me.” “ I will recommend full massage” the doctor was grinning from the side of his mouth….... In the next few minutes, I was inside another room where there was a big wooden cot and a young man was stand-ing with a big smile… “Hello Sir… I am Prajesh , pl go to that room and change your dress”. I went inside and found no dress.. “What do you want me to wear?” I asked with a trembling voice… Prajesh showed me a piece of cloth which was about 2 feet long but only 15 cms in breadth… “What...how do I cover myself with this?”. I almost screamed at him.. “You need not fully cover yourself sir…..you tie it here and I will massage your back” came the reply . I thought to myself “OK.. the catch is on my back”. In the next few minutes… I was standing in front of Pra-jesh not as a CA, not as General Manager of a company but like a vagabond…nomad…with a beautiful attire… Prajesh told me to lie down on my stomach…” OK … I can’t help it”… I reluctantly climbed on the cot cursing myself and lied on my stomach …Prajesh came forward and next moment he pulled that piece of cloth also from my waist.” This is atrocious” I was yelling at him. Prajesh pacified me,” Sir… I need to massage your back fully with oil… and I am doing it not only for you but with everybody” he was trying to justify his actions…...“Where are you work-ing Sir…?” was the next question. Is it the appropriate time for him to ask me this question? I then noticed a tea kettle by the side… Wow they provide tea and all for the patients?. I was wrong.. Prajesh took that kettle, poured some stinking oil…. boiled it on a stove… he seemed to be very generous as he poured half of the oil on my back, waist and started massaging … I guessed… he was working in any bakery making the dough… I then noticed that in the other rooms also guys of more than 40 ,, 50 were getting massage…..Prajesh was at his best… He folded my legs back and forth… like some one in the gym… pressing my back with a hot bag… it was pain-ful…and the pain seemed to be aggravating. Finally after 40 minutes he stopped it and I was asked to go back to the other room to change.. He told me “OK Sir… I will be outside and you change yourself and come out”…I got up walked across the room with a cat-walk… by then… there were some missed-calls,,, some SMS.. “Sridhar… are you free now ?” When I came out … I could see some people in the reception… Chartered Accountants, Bank Managers, some Toastmasters and even Area Governors. The cashier told me “ Sir.. if you pay for all the 10 massages at one shot, you will get 3 massages free” I said” enough …my pain is gone”.. Fellow Toastmasters there are certain yoga and breathing exercises for keeping better health… regular walking for at least 45 minutes a day will do wonders to our body.. for each part of our body there is a specific yoga and if we do that with the help of a yoga-teacher, we don’t need to expose ourselves to such hazardous moments and peo-ple like Prajesh….

Who was described as Seditious half naked fakir in 1931 ? It was Mahatma Gandhi. Is it not typical of us that we judge everything by its gift wrapper, including people? We judge people based on their looks. We might not have met this person; we might not have interacted with him, why we might not even have heard about that person. But we totally assume a person by just looking at him, his attire, his walking style. We prejudge the person without giving him the benefit of doubt. Once upon a time, there lived a witty an intelligent person by the name Mulla Naseeruddin. The King used to coun-sel Mulla in intricate and important matters. On a sunny evening, Mulla was gardening in is house. That time, a messenger from the King’s court appeared in front of Mulla and invited him to the King’s palace for dinner. Mulla was very happy and immediately started off to the palace. He was sweating and smelling bad, his dress was soiled. His hands and legs had mud stains and his pants were half folded. But Mulla went on to the Palace. The moment he tried to enter the lunch hall, he is stopped by the security guard. “Invitation please sir” the guard said with an ignorant and filthy look on his face. Mulla said “Bhai, I’m Mulla. You know Mulla Mulla. King has given me a personal invitation”. The security said with a stern voice “The Invitation…… please”. Mulla went back home. Back home, he took a refreshing bath and shaved his face clean. He wore his richest glossy robe with lot of jewels. He wore a few rings, a diamond studded turban, a dagger and then goes to the lunch hall again. This time, the se-curity does not even bother to stop Mulla. Mulla throws lot of tantrums in front of the guard, but the guard has a calm smile and says “Welcome Sir”. Happy, Mulla enters the hall and approaches the food table. Looking at his robe, many guests think that the King has himself arrived. But then they recognize it is Mulla and approach him to strike a conversation. Mulla takes a big plate and fills it with food. During the conversations, Mulla takes a spoon full of food and puts it into his dress pockets. The red curry splashed over the beautiful robe creates a gory picture. Thinking it to be an accident, the people around feel sad. But he doesn’t stop. Another spoon and again he splashes it on his sparkling milky pants. People are shocked and bewil-dered at this sight. They realize that it is intentional act and slowly step backwards. He puts lot of food inside his turban and wears it on his head. The food starts dripping all over his face, by now he is a spectacle of an incorrigi-ble lunatic with all his richness spoilt to ruins. By this time, the King, having come to know of the whole incident, approaches the Mulla, with a huge concern. He knows that there is a reason why Mulla is doing all this drama. He softly asks “Mulla, What are you doing? What is the problem?” Mulla gives a big smile “Oh Mighty King. Thank you for inviting both of us for dinner”. King “Mulla, both? Have you come with a friend? Where is your friend?” Mulla “Oh King. The first time, I came alone. I was dirty, stinking and sweating. Rightly, I was not allowed inside the dinner hall. The second time, I brought my friend along. The dress, the jewels, the dagger, the turban, the perfume – the complete gift wrapping over my body. I was immediately allowed inside. I realized how important my friend, my gift wrapper is. So I thought it is my duty to feed my friend first. Look oh King, do you think that my friend will be happy with the meal? Should I feed him any more? And this poor myself; should I even eat? ” The king was initially confused, but slowly realized what had happened. He felt completely ashamed and enraged. He called the guard immediately and fired him. He profusely apologized to Mulla, heartily thanked Mulla for teach-ing him such an important lesson and gifted him a bag full of gold coins. So lets never ever judge a book on the basis of its cover; people on the basis of their looks; a gift on the basis of its gift wrapper. Let us look through it and try to see the gift inside, as the gift wrapper finally goes into the bustbin.

All wanted to be THIS, even when I am penning now and while you are reading this article, the ulti-mate aim is to achieve THAT. Any guesses, Is it to be rich?, Do you all agree?, I believe most of us dis-agree, I too, even the rich of richest want to be richer and obviously the rich of richest sacrificed many values i.e. true love, trust, honesty, integrity …… to attain their riches because he realizes that he is not richest in all aspects, except in wealth.

Many of us may think that it may be success, Are you sure? Can I lock it? I know …. Some of you are in a dilemma…. SUCCESS, oh… Success is a continuous journey, it never ends, yes you are correct, here, the question is about the destination, success cannot be the destination hence it is not suc-cess either. Then what? Okay, I will give you a hint.

We all are inspired by someone. That helps you to move up in your life and induces you to determine your goals, and the plans to achieve. Is it true - Prior Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance? Just flick your “To Do List” or Diary Plan, I don’t think that is blank, you all are proactive and determined, sure you may not have an empty space in that. Is it ? woo…hooo if you have more and more in your “To Do List” then you require more time to achieve THAT, otherwise if your “To Do List” is clean and clear you are very much closer to it, How is it possible? continue reading. Either you are disciplined to achieve your plans or forced to achieve a target, in both situations there will be an in-visible pressure that makes you more alert and it continuously asks.. … What is next? … What is next? Am I on the right track? … Does this help to achieve my goal or target? …. This is the first article of Radesh...… Is it worth read-ing further? …yes, your thinking is very natural. Either you are a self-starter and have motivated yourself to achieve something or are inspired by others to succeed in something, in both the scenarios, you will hear an inner voice. To hear it now, just close your eyes for a minute and think deeply and ask yourself “Why Am I doing this ?” you can hear , “you are inferior now ” or “you are weak” or “you are inefficient” and we always believe in “there is a room for further improvement“, such thoughts indirectly pass messages to your subconscious mind that YOU ARE INCOMPLETE. Do you think anybody is going to stop the incompleteness? No, no-one and it never ends, you believe that after achieving XYZ, you will at-tain “completion” in yourself but once you achieved the XYZ, your mind tells you to move forward and this proc-ess will be going on endlessly . Why have we to bother about INCOMPLETENESS? Because, you will never become the happiest person as long as you feel incomplete. I strongly believe, everybody wants to be the happiest human being, which is the purpose of living. Some of us may think that after achieving XYZ, they will be happy and that happiness motivates further de-velopment. Yes, I too agree after achieving XYZ you will get happiness and that happiness cannot be extended even for a minute because instantly your mind tells you to go-ahead and try to achieve bigger than what you achieved now. It means again your brain indirectly informs that you are incomplete even after you achieved XYZ. Whatever you achieved, be it skills or the money you earn or the highest position you reached or the biggest net-work you created, you feel you are incomplete. Therefore your happiness is not enduring forever; it comes once in blue moon.

We have tried many things to be happy, why don’t you try this too, for a while just feel that from

this moment you are complete in all respects. Feel broadness in your personality, extensiveness in

your knowledge & skills, fullness in your relationship, completeness in your health. Feel it again and

again, and you will feel peaceful and calm. Your happiness is ensured if you remain in this state.

Don’t Miss it
