There was a time when video art was seen as truly radical with lots of talk of “interventions” and “deconstructing the post-modernist model”, but in recent times the genre itself has become not only overused, but also diluted to the point where there’s not that much difference between an “installation” and what some of us might just call “a fi lm”. Still, there are some doing interesting things with it, like RACHEL MACLEAN, whose LET IT GO is at IMAG until 22 AUG. Using green screen technology she constructs fantasy narratives starring herself in a variety of costumes and dialogue sourced from YouTube. Is it art? Perhaps, perhaps not, but it’s certainly entertaining.

Also at IMAG until 22 AUG is DANISH DIASPORA: SCOTLAND SEEN THROUGH DANISH EYES. While you can’t imagine anyone wanting to leave such a lovely place as Denmark, here is some work by artists who have done just that and now call Scotland home. Rooted in and inspired by Scotland’s wild scenery, pieces include ceramics, jewellery, baskets and boxes. The fi ve artists (LISE BECH, LILIAN BUSCH, LOTTE GLOB, NICKOLAI GLOBE and METTE FRUERGAARD-JENSEN) have exhibited nationally and internationally.

IMAG currently occupies one of the ugliest external spaces in town, but for a sense of what could be done differently, head across the river to EDEN COURT where there’s an interesting exhibition running throughout August. Space Agency Inverness has collaborated with Kerr AT architects for something called 6 POSSIBLE THINGS BEFORE BREAKFAST... (a title inspired by Alice in Wonderland), an entertaining work of half a dozen imaginative, startling – but, importantly, possible – Inverness City Centre Architectural ideas. Each proposal aims to improve the environment and create a more enjoyable Inverness. Be inspired.

Talking of enjoyable, KILMORACK GALLERY is always just that. They’ve three shows running from 12 AUG–12 SEP. ROCK OF AGES [1] showcases ALLAN MACDONALD’s paintings of the Scottish landscape, particularly the wild North and Shetland Isles; NORTHERN LIGHT [2] features the sublime watercolours of PETER DAVIS; and THE UNBEARABLE BRIGHTNESS OF BEING [3] features the playful, Lowryesque paintings of JAMES NEWTON ADAMS portraying daily life on Skye and the island’s glorious landscape.

FILMWhat IS a Super Hero?

DOCUMENTARYCOMEDY DRAMA FAMILY ROMANCE

12

So, Belladrum Festival this year is themed Superheroes, which perhaps captures the zeitgeist, what with so many cinema releases from the Marvel and DC universes forming a queue to try to break box offi ce records. This month, indeed, sees FANTASTIC FOUR [1] arrive (Vue fr 06 AUG) – newly re-vamped by very-rated-by-those-in-the-know director Josh Trank (Chronicle) to be a little more gritty and grown-up – more Cronenberg than the ‘05 Silver Surfer version. On the other end of the scale box-offi ce-wise, this month you can also see THE SALT OF THE EARTH [2] (EC, 23-29) – a documentary about Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado, made by German auteur, playwright, author (and also photographer), Wim Wenders, in conjunction with the subject’s son, Juliano Ribeiro Salgado. When you see the powerful human truths of Salgado’s work, the places he’s put himself, the things he’s seen – who could say he is not, in fact, a super hero? If this is not your sort of thing, then this fi lm is the perfect opportunity to challenge yourself to be brave and try something you wouldn’t normally. We’d be highly surprised if you weren’t suprised.

Heroes of other denominations appear in such diverse delights as Guy Ritchie’s revised THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. [3] (Vue 14), with Armie Hammer and Henry Cavill; STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON [4] (Vue, 14) drama about the awesome NWA (feat, Ice Cube played by his own son – aah); and PIXELS [5] (Vue, 08), in which our digital friends - PacMan, Donkey Kong, etc - turn up from space to destroy us all. Oops. [NB: Sandler alert].

Comedic fi lms are out in summer holiday force - literally, in the form of VACATION [6] (Vue, 21), the latest National Lampoon outing (complete with cameos from Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo), starring comedy stalwarts Ed Helms, Christina Applegate, Leslie Mann and, erm, Chris Hemsworth; then there’s ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING (Vue, 14) - Simon Pegg, Kate Beckinsale, Robin Williams and Eddie Izzard directed by Python’s Terry Jones, who is joined by the rest of his gang as aliens (obv)…; TRAINWRECK (Vue, 28) pitches at ‘Bridesmaids’ kinda territory, with Amy Schumer and Bill Hader directed by Judd Apatow; whilst MASTERMINDS (Vue, 07) features the irresistible combination of Zach Galifi anakis with Owen Wilson and Kristen Wiig. Mmmm.

Wiig swaps comedy for poignant drama in DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL (Vue 07; EC 21), her daughter Bel Powley’s fi rst sexual experience happens to be with her mom’s boyfriend, Alexander Skarsgård. Double oops. Also worthy of note at Eden Court: Robert Carlyle’s directorial debut, THE LEGEND OF BARNEY THOMSON [7] (07-20), a macabre dark comedy; not disimilar in some ways, to French slapstick murder mystery, P’TIT QUINQUIN (07-09); then there’s SOUTHPAW (28-03); SHE’S FUNNY THAT WAY (14-18); MAGIC MIKE XXL (21-25); RUTH AND ALEX (21-27); PANTANI: THE ACCIDENTAL DEATH OF A CYCLIST (27); and GOING CLEAR: SCIENTOLOGY AND THE PRISON OF BELIEF (08-10) – which those crazy, crazy lizard-and-money-lovin’ lunatics don’t want you to see...

Playing In The Garden

1515

The folk at EDEN COURT have increasingly utilised new performance spaces rather than just the purpose built theatres and one of the most successful moves was the introduction last year of the Big White Tent in the front garden. Great to see that it’s back again from 12–16 AUG hosted by NICOLE & MARTIN [1], who’ll be presenting four award-winning shows combining theatre, song, acrobatics and a celebration of storytelling. And these are tales that draw on that fi ne European tradition of sprinkling a little darkness into proceedings, investing the yarns with goosebumps that always appeal to kids.

On 13 AUG it’s THE FISHERMAN AND HIS WIFE in which an enchanted fi sh grants a fi sherman and his wife any wishes they ask for, a rollercoaster of a show bracketed by performances of HANSEL & GRETEL on 12 & 16 AUG. The latter is typical of that aforementioned darkness being ostensibly a story of child abduction, but there’s a happy ending and plenty of thrills and spills along the way. Similarly THE GIRL WITH NO HANDS on 14 AUG doesn’t exactly hold back on its central premise as a foolish father somehow manages to make a pact whereby his daughter loses her hands, but it turns into a delightfully performed piece involving humour and even a tightrope. Fourth of the shows is THE BREMEN TOWN MUSICIANS on 15 AUG which fi nds a donkey, a dog, a cat and a rooster heading off to Bremen to start a new life as town musicians, a scenario which we can all agree sounds perfectly feasible. The whole thing sounds like a delight and let’s hope the Big White Tent becomes a regular yearly fi xture.

The Singing Kettle used to be regular visitors and still occupy a cherished place in the hearts of a generation of Scots, so their recent decision to call it a day was sad news for many. We should have known that you can’t keep troupers down for long and SK’s Gary has teamed up with Anya and Kevin to form the FUNBOX crew, who are bringing their show PIRATES AND PRINCESSES [2] to EDEN COURT on 22 & 23 AUG. Youngsters are encouraged to come along dressed as said pirates and princesses for a singalong adventure involving trying to fi nd the keys to open the magical Funbox, with contributions from Bonzo The Dog and a host of new friends.and princesses for a singalong adventure involving trying to fi nd the keys to open the magical Funbox, with contributions from Bonzo The Dog and a host of new friends.

MUSICCLUBBINGCLASSICAL FOLK JAZZ/WORLD ROCK

Glastonbury and T In The Park are all very well, but it’s the festivals closer to home that are cranking into action this month. Beginning with something that’s pretty much earned the right to be called a Highland Treasure, BELLADRUM TARTAN HEART FESTIVAL from 06–08 AUG. The shindig sells out in moments these days, especially since the introduction of a Thursday night performance, so it’s to its credit that it makes the effort to actually turn the experience of attending into something special. This year it’s THE PROCLAIMERS [1] that get the Thursday slot, with performances to look forward to from MANIC STREET PREACHERS [2] (read our interview with the always entertaining Nicky Wire on P22), KAISER CHIEFS [3], MARTHA REEVES & THE VANDELLAS [4], VILLAGERS [5], FATHERSON, NEON WALTZ, HONEYBLOOD [6], THE STRANGLERS, MACFLOYD and many, many more. Plus loads of dance action on the Mothers Ruin stage and a fi ner setting than any in the land (even including hot tubs!). There’s a superhero theme, so expect countless folk in tights.

For a brief time the summer festival circuit up here also included RockNess, but that one kind of ate itself, leaving not just a cultural gap, but also a physical one at that glorious lochside location at Dores. Both will hopefully be fi lled by the debut incarnation of GROOVE LOCH NESS on 31 JUL & 01 AUG. Going back to the roots of what attracted many to RockNess in the fi rst place, the emphasis is very much on dance music and clubbing. GROOVE ARMADA [7] headline and you’ll also be able to do your thang to 2 MANY DJs [8], German producer TENSNAKE [9], Sub Club’s HARRI & DOMENIC, B-TRAITS [10], ELI AND FUR [11] and jocks from HECTOR’S HOUSE in Edinburgh and our very own FILTH and FUGAZY.

Another relatively new event is the INSIDER FESTIVAL, but there’s a twist to this year’s event taking place in STRATHSPEY on 22 AUG as it takes in a safari by steam train with punters urged to dress as either wild animals or big game hunters. We’re not entirely sure why either, but it should be fun and there’s music from SPRING BREAK [12], HECTOR BIZERK [13] and many more. And the whole safari is crowdfunded so to give your support go to the Insider Festival Facebook page.

It’s not all festivals this month with some good one-off gigs, particularly for fans of folk and traditional sounds. Best of the bunch, all at EDEN COURT look like being the always engaging ALY BAIN & PHIL CUNNINGHAM [14] on 29 AUG and the lively bluegrass of GORDIE MACKEEMAN & HIS RHYTHM BOYS [15] on 19 AUG.

“You can get intoxicated by adulation…

…Sometimes you still need to be hated a bit.”

“If we’d split up after our fi rst single I’d probably be living at home

with my mum now… …Just pottering about. You have to embrace the

idea of boredom, something the new generation doesn’t understand.”

“I think we’d have struggled in today’s social media world… …No one wants to do anything; they just want to shout on Twitter.” “It’s diffi cult to negotiate your forties when you’re in a group…

…but I think we’ve rediscovered our inspiration. The last two albums

we’ve made have been among our best. Futurology was defi nitely our

most European. That said, I can’t imagine we’ll still be doing this in

thirty years time.”

“There’s never been a greater divide generationally… …It’s the pacifying aspect of the digital age.”

“We’re looking forward to playing Belladrum…

…we played Rock Ness a few years ago, but apart from that we’ve

only ever come as far North as Aberdeen, so it’s about time we came

up to you. And I’ve heard lots of good things about Tartan Heart.”

This issue is full of summer events that have become “established”, whether over the period of a decade (Tartan Heart Festival) or just a few years (outdoor theatre, the circus tent at Eden Court, charity run at the airport), but there’s one that’s the great-granddaddy of them all in terms of heritage and that’s the BLACK ISLE SHOW [1] on 05 & 06 AUG. The Black Isle was one of the earliest Highland areas to experience The Clearances leading to an infl ux of Lowland farmers and the beginning of an agricultural way of life that remains at the heart of the community. The Black Isle Show itself, held at Mannsfi eld Showground, Muir of Ord, started way back in 1836 and has become a regular attraction for countless generations since. As well as competitions in all sorts of livestock categories, there are plenty of trade stalls and displays by motorcyclists and their ilk, plus sheep racing, which is a hipster event just waiting to happen. It’s preview day on WED 05, with the main event the next day. More details at blackisleshow.info

A bit more delightful nostalgia at the HISTORIC WHEELS VINTAGE CAR RALLY at BRODIE CASTLE on 09 AUG. 300 vintage motors will pass the front of the Castle before parking along the whole of the West Drive. See motors from throughout the decades lined up together in this beautiful setting and talk to the owners while agreeing that they really don’t make vehicles like that any more.

If you prefer your things of ageless beauty to be a little smaller, head along to the THISTLE HOTEL on 29 & 30 AUG for the INVERNESS MODEL RAILWAY CLUB EXHIBITION [2]. It’s a pastime that’s beginning to shake off its former image of sad chaps stuck in the attic and you can expect to see some dazzling displays, though it might help if you know your way around potential conversations about 00 Gauge and the like. Well worth a visit.

A quick mention too for the TEDX CONFERENCE at BOGBAIN FARM on 30 JUL. Going under the TED banner, though independently run, it features several interesting local speakers, notably Maria Maclennan [3] who while be talking about something called “Forensic Jewellery”, a way of identifying dead people from their jewellery that Maria hopes will eventually be used by the FBI. More about this at our website…

SPORTBALLATHLETIC COMBAT EXTREME RACING

Back On The BikeBack On The BikeBy the time you read this, the Tour De France will have ended and, if things have gone to plan, will be looked back on as the best edition of the race in 30 years. Perhaps it’ll even inspire more people to get on their bikes, in which case they’ll be eager to participate in the BRITISH HEART FOUNDATION LOCH NESS BIKE RIDE [1] on 22 AUG. The 70 mile route takes you on a scenic but tough ride along quiet country lanes along the south side of Loch Ness to Fort Augustus before turning around and heading back to Inverness. It includes a few tough climbs, the most challenging being the climb out of Fort Augustus. The 50-mile route also starts out from Inverness and offers a stunning circular ride around the south side of the Loch.

There’s a wealth of great cycling events up here and one of the best, ETAPE LOCH NESS has just announced that next year’s ride is to take place on 24 APR. A long way off, but places go fast, so if you want to be informed the moment they’re up for grabs, go to etapelochness.com

Something a little more sedentary, though just as enthusiastic comes in the form of HIGHLAND SUMMER DARTS CHALLENGE at IRONWORKS on 28 AUG. This, the latest ‘arrers event in Inverness, features ALAN NORRIS (2014 World Championship Runner Up) SCOTT MITCHELL (Current BDO World Champion) KEEGAN BROWN (Current World Youth Champion) and KIM HUYBRECHTS (2015 Premier League Player).

Finally the football season is back and both ICT and ROSS COUNTY will be hoping to start the new campaign like they ended the last one. Caley Thistle even had an early start in the form of a Europa League tie, but the Scottish Premiership is their bread and butter, so they’ll be hoping for another top fi ve fi nish at least. They’re at home to MOTHERWELL on 01 AUG, to PARTICK on 12 AUG and HAMILTON on 22 AUG. County host HAMILTON on 08 AUG, HEARTS on 15 AUG and DUNDEE UTD on 29 AUG.

THEATREWhat the Dickens?!

DANCECOMEDYCABARET DRAMA MUSICAL

CABARET > COMEDY > DANCE > DRAMA > MUSICALS > MORE > 33

It’s quite a month at EDEN COURT for fans of a Dickensian vibe, kicking off with SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE RIPPER MURDERS [1] from 06–08 AUG. The show, written by Brian Clemens, smartly elides two of the most notable fi gures from the days of pea-soupers and threepenny fumbles, even if one is fi ctional and the other could have been anyone from painter Walter Sickert or the Duke of Clarence to the Queen’s surgeon or a psychopathic émigré. In this yarn there are freemasons, conspiracies and plots at the highest level of the establishment but for Holmes, there is a uniquely personal element to this investigation. Should be rather good.

Sticking with a world of rickets, ragamuffi ns and right royal shenanigans, you can’t really go wrong with Lionel Bart’s wonderful OLIVER! (EC, 12–15 AUG). It’s being put on by the excellent Starlight Musical Theatre, whose previous successes include acclaimed productions of Jesus Christ Superstar, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and West Side Story, so expect it to be pretty top notch. Bart sold away the rights to the show for a pittance, so it never really made him the riches he deserved, but the songs are so good and the tale so universally gripping, that it’s sure to provide a legacy to his memory that will last a hundred years.

Someone who is reaping the reward of having the common touch is comedian KEVIN BRIDGES [2]. In the space of a few short years he’s gone from relative unknown to the country’s most famous Scottish comedian and someone whose appeal even seems to have stretched to Middle England. We still think there’s defi nitely something a bit fi shy about him looking a good decade older than he actually is, but there’s no denying his talents including a fresh Scots comic sensibility that can move from gentle observation to absolute fi lth in the blink of an eye. His shows at EDEN COURT 25–28 AUG will be packed to the rafters and these days actually count as “intimate” shows for him.

If you prefer your comedic culture a little more classical, you’d do well to head to CAWDOR CASTLE on 30 AUG for a production of TWELFTH NIGHT [3] by the acclaimed Lord Chamberlain’s Men, a troupe who’ve made quite a name for themselves by performing the Bard’s work in a style authentic to when it was created. This, the most famous of Shakespeare’s romantic comedies may seem a tad simplistic (or baffl ing) in its quest for laughs to modern eyes and ears, but you’ll come away having enjoyed it all, guaranteed.

Making The Most Of You: fi tnessListen y’self fi tter...Kit yourself out with a smartphone armbandExercise. You love it, you hate it, you do it (if you don’t, you’ll already have fl icked past this page). Music helps ‒ it can provide a rhythm to mindlessly exercise in time to, can provide a dynamic lift and lull to suit varied intensity workouts ‒ and can even prove motivational.

When you don’t have something occupying that part of your brain, it is often very hard to get away from focussing on the pain, the discomfort of your activity. No matter how much you try to divert yourself with thoughts of what to have for dinner, musing on possible outcomes to the Greek bail out crisis or trying to get all zen on yourself, sooner or later you check to see how long you’ve been exercising - more to the point, how long do you have left to endure your physical challenge.

So, we want music ‒ and are probably going to want to play it from our phone / ipod or somesuch. You don’t really want to run with it on your hand (and many of us do!) - that’s far too hazardous. If you’ve a pocket or pouch the right size that’s fi ne - so long as it fastens/zips to keep your device safe. But then there’s the joggling about with your beloved tech clanging off your hip/chest/butt ‒ and anyway, what about if you don’t have pockets or if it’s too hot to be wear your jacket/trousers with pocket, etc, etc?

Get an armband, that’s what. There are many on the market but one keeps appearing near the top of most of the ‘top 5’s ‒ from the wonderfully named womens’ activity/tech gear brand, Sweaty Betty.

The Sweaty Betty Media Armband is breathable, comfortable, with an adjustable (velcro) strap and a touch-through screen so you can operate your phone while you exercise - and it fi ts most smart phones. It also has a safety-conscious refl ective strip/logo to help keep you visible. Job done.

Nourish105-107 Church Street, Inverness 01463 250 589

There are claimed to be around 150,000 vegan folk in the UK – in any event, we know it is considerably less than 1%. In the good ol’ future-embracing US of A however, that number is more like 2.5% – something like seven and a half million people! Bill Clinton and Al Gore are apparently vegan, so’s Flo Rida and Jessica Chastain, whilst the world’s actual classiest ladeee, Beyoncé, went vegan for just long enough to stumble into a vegan restaurant in a fox collar and then go out on a seafood binge to celebrate her fur pas.

So, you know, some people are vegan, some people aren’t – life goes on. And whilst once upon a time a vegan invariably had a dog on a string (ahh, how I miss scum punk), these days you can’t even tell by looking. Perhaps just as well - as Chamillionaire pointed out in his vegan anarchist anthem, ‘They see me rollin’, they hatin’…’, and I don’t think any of us wants to see a return to the murky days of drive-by vegan baiting.

But what’s all this extremism got to do with you? Well, Inverness has

an almost (but not quite) vegan restaurant. Oh yes it has. You know the Riverdale Centre on Church Street? (You don’t? Then where on earth do you go for your cranio-sacral therapy?) Well, along with it’s organic café it is now called Nourish and they boast a (very affable as it turns out) new vegan chef and revised, largely vegan (some vegetarian) menu. So how could we resist, dear reader, when we know you so love a challenge?

Want to know how to get there? Well, if you’re the wrong side of the river (sorry Eden Court, you know it’s true), then go to the bouncy bridge by Riverhouse Restaurant, bounce over, keep straight on up the alley and lo!, it’s on your left; if you’re on God’s own side then amble beyond your comfort zone down Church Street (ie past Hootananny) and keep going until you see the alley for the bouncy bridge on your left and several chalkboards regaling you with the wonders of today’s specials, cakes and complimentary therapies.

It’s a little bit not like the Tardis - smaller on the inside than in appears from the outside - but don’t let that put you off.

We rolled in, three tyros intent on a wild afternoon of wine, women and wagyu – quickly realised our mistake, and rather than our usual ‘trash the place and hit Wetherspoons’, we instead formed a new-age triptych, all temples-for-bodies and concern for the planet. Did you know that we grow 16kg of grain to produce 1kg of meat? While one billion-ish people are starving-ish? Or that your per-acre yield of soya beans is about 17 times higher than beef? And the amount of water used to produce meat is around 30 showers per burger (that one’s my favourite)?

Nourish are not about the dogma or politics though (no vegan-army pamphlets here), they’re more about providing the choice I guess - and a tasty choice it turns out to be.

Whilst not necessarily a three course meal kinda place, we just went that way. Butternut Squash Soup and Broccoli & Lemon Soup opened up proceedings – the former was a triumph – substantial and sweet, seasoned to perfection; the latter was interesting - very fl avourful 3939

with plenty of lemon apparent, though a little ‘wet’ to be excellent. I like a thick soup, and a little less watery with the same level of fl avour would have been stunning. The accompanying bread is sourced from Findhorn and whilst it is laudable to support local organic suppliers it is nonetheless a fairly unremarkable sliced bread.

Our mains were ‘Shepherdless Pie’ served with Wild Salad and a Tofu BLT Sandwich. Now me and tofu go back a bit, and it’s not all good. From an amazingly clever ‘crispy duck’ offered in a London oriental outlet to fl accid, fl avourless white wibbly cubes of depression served by well meaning food haters. This variety makes me want to forget the divorce ever happened and get back out on a wild road trip with tofu. Texture, fl avour, bite and substance – hooray! A clang of umami set off by sweet tomato and fresh, peppery rocket – a satisfying mouthful if ever there was one.

Unless I’ve been labouring under a fairly dramatic misapprehension, Shepherd’s Pie doesn’t generally contain actual shepherd - so the name Shepherdless Pie is a bit of a misnomer, but everything else about this dish is awesome. The dense pie itself is rewarding – generous mashed potato header baked to a crisp topping, fabulously wholesome and taste-packed fi lling with textured vegetable/soy protein, courgettes, carrot and more – but the guest stars on the plate lift the dish to another level; from an intriguingly delicate coleslaw with sunfl ower and pumpkin seeds, to bite-fresh spinach with a breath of sauerkraut (or similar) on top, and a beautifully soft cold barley salad. #dreamy

Desserts don’t feature here as such – but they do a great line in cakes and bakes. Foregoing such vegan wonders as Apricot, Cranberry & Banana Flapjacks and the Walnut & Banana Loaf, we opted for the Raspberry & Pine Nut Flapjacks, and a gluten-free pairing of Chocolate Brownie and Raspberry & Polenta Cake, washed down with a bliss-inducing fresh Ginger & Lemon tea. The ‘jack is sound enough – chewy, fi lling, with generous berry; the Brownie is intensely chocolatey with very pleasing chunks – a little dry around

the edges. The Raspberry & Polenta concept scared me – a cake made of a semolina-type substance made me shudder with fl ashbacks of gagging on a tired 70s blamanche. Not so – this is an absolute triumph of a cake. Luxuriously soft bearing a sweet outer shell with seams of richest fragrant raspberry and touches of lemon. Wow. Really, wow. With a little more pizzaz presentation-wise this would draw ‘ooh’s’ in the swankiest of local eateries.

Which makes me think – stick them in a bowl and add a welcome ladle of cream and you’d have a complete dessert. But what about the vegans, you ask? Now, there are many strange things I happen to know that most of you wouldn’t want to know (I put them aside in a tiny drawer by the typewriter, marked ‘special’, so you don’t have to be troubled by things like the true nature of black holes, how Andy Murray could have beaten Mr Federer, the ugly truth about nationalism, how the NHS could be twice as good for half the money or what how it is that you can feel both big and small at precisely the same time) – but one of them appropriate for today is that there is a product by Belgish company Alpro, called ‘Coconut Cuisine’, which is without a doubt the most creamy substance known to mankind. Yet it is free from dairy, gluten and wheat. And it is more-ish and delicious - so would absolutely suit being drizzled generously over any of the fi ne, fi ne cakes Nourish have to offer. Unless you don’t like the taste of coconut, of course.

Anyway – you can try that one at home (thanks Tesco) – but you could do worse than head to Nourish to check out all they have to offer. And you’ll be giving the animals a day off….

cool interiorsThe Magic RoundaboutAward-winning innovation from LINAWhat do this stylish set of poufs have in common with The Monkees’ Mickey Dolenz and pint-sized, quad-loving Canadian fi gure skater of yore, Elvis Stojko?

Oh, come on chaps, you can do better than that ‒ at least try to rise above the obvious. No, the answer is (and well done if you got this) that they all have their roots in Slovenia - in the case of the furniture, specifi cally from design house, LINA.

Their new modular system ‒ Roundabout ‒ comprises a series of sitting elements of varying dimensions that can be used in isolation or combination as coff ee tables, chairs or bar stools. They are made of plywood plus high density foam fabric colours that come in a wide range of tasteful, contemporary colours.

What’s clever is that they attach to one another with fl exible joints, and as each one can rotate round another this makes for an almost unlimited number of possible compositions of rows or clusters ‒ making them equally suited to diff erent rooms, from large expansive spaces to small, narrow hallways.

This innovation has seen them pick up a bunch of design awards this year which should ensure we start seeing them appear in swanky design-conscious hotels , airports or homes around the globe.

This year the HSPC sponsored Gerald Cooper Memorial Cup is again up for grabs. This trophy is awarded to the first Highland runner to finish the Loch Ness Marathon, HSPC make a £1000 donation to a charity of the winner’s choice.

Terry Forrest (pictured opposite) has won the Cup for the past three years, donating the prize to Marie Curie cancer care charity and last year to Alder Hey Hospital where the new born baby daughter of a friend went through a life saving operation. Terry said: “I’m really grateful to HSPC for donating the prize fund each year. It is a fantastic gesture.”

“This will be my seventh year doing the Baxters Loch Ness marathon and I’ve run a personal best time every year I’ve been there. I’ve done around 30 marathons and this is my favourite one. I love the whole atmosphere, it’s a real festival of running and there’s such a good feel about the whole occasion.

“I enjoy chatting to other runners on the bus trip out to the start. It’s great to talk with people at the back of the field before the race gets underway, to hear their stories and to share experiences. Many of them tend to be doing their first marathon so I try to help them out with a bit of advice.

“It’s great once you get going and the course is beautiful along Loch Ness, it’s really enjoyable and when we reach the village of Dores there’s always people out cheering us along and offering the runners jelly babies.”
