IBSEN SEMINAR
DECEMBER 13th 14th, 2009
A Perspective:
The seminar will focus on two important issues:
1. A discussion on Inter-cultural theatre. Prof Erika Fischer-Lichte is one of theforemost scholars and renowned teachers, and has written extensively on the
subject. In the Indian context we are looking afresh at the meaning of inter-
culturalism in theatre, against the background of a long history of inter- and
intra- cultural experience of European and regional influences on urban Indian
theatre.
2. The other focus in the seminar is on the presentation of the director and
research scholar inter-active experience. Both will speak of how they worked
together in the context of the manner in which the altered/appropriated scripts
were analyzed.
The resurgence of Ibsen worldwide since 2006, has found different nuances fromearlier more individual perspective of Ibsens characters. There is a new trend in the
interpretation of Ibsens texts that broadens its outlook, examining issues that Ibsen
raises, from a more holistic social, cultural and psychological point of view that
engages with the politics of newly emerging democracies espousing the cause of
freedom of thought, liberation and emancipation in a wider social context.
Projecting Ibsen again after a relatively long silence of almost 30 years, had left a
lacuna in the perception of Ibsens writing in the minds of the new generation of
young theatre practitioners, even while Ibsen studies in Universities, in English
Honors courses, continues out a compulsion of academic habit. While it
undoubtedly creates sparks in the young minds that read Ibsen, it remains dormant out
of a lack of practical substantiation in contemporary society. If Ibsen is to contribute
the power of his rhetoric and poetry in a modern society, the reflection of his ideas
must change to suit the way in which young people look at the content of his plays.
While commissioning the production of Ibsen, I felt we needed to also look into our
newly emerging need of an interaction between directors and scholars, so as to bring
together theoretical discourse and practice. One scholar interacting with each of the
directors would certainly help to interface their inputs during the production process,
and bring something quite different to the production. We hope to discuss the results
of this interaction in the seminar on Ibsen, and bring more sharply into focus, the
question of dramaturgy in theatre.
