IBM Smarter Healthcare Networks Executive Summary
Our solution costs 30% less than legacy copper based switched networks
Our solution allows you to reclaim legacy wiring closet space for critical care and beds, increasing your
revenues
Our solution converges multiples separate networks onto a single fiber optic infrastructure saving you space
and making moves and changes far easier (e.g. reduced HEPA tenting)
Our solution provides military-grade security and encryption that protects patient data and improves HIPPA
compliance.
Our solution is simpler to operate and manage than legacy switched networks
Our solution is based on carrier-grade technology which is more reliable than legacy switched networks

The IBM Smarter Healthcare Network provides substantial TCO advantages over
legacy switch-based network architectures.
IBM recently performed a TCO analysis for a 12 story
building where a converged fiber optic infrastructure
was compared to a legacy copper based switched
network
The year 1 CapEx savings achieved with the IBM
Smarter Network were close to $1,000,000.00

Legacy healthcare networks are no longer an efficient or cost-effective operating
model.
Legacy healthcare network designs
rely on multiple separate networks to
deliver services
Legacy healthcare networks rely
heavily on copper and coax cabling,
requiring frequent rip and replace
upgrades as technologies change
Legacy networks take up substantial
space for wiring closets due to the
distance limitations of copper cabling
Legacy networks require substantial
power and cooling in the wiring closets
for stacks of network electronics

IBM has developed the IBM Smarter Healthcare Network which costs one third
less than a legacy switched network architecture.
Our solution uses a single fiber-based Passive
Optical Network for all services (LAN, Cellular,
Wi-Fi)
Our solution uses far less cabling saving you
install time, materials cost, and space
Our solution uses far fewer wiring closets than a
legacy switch-based design allowing you to
reclaim space for beds and critical care
Our solution requires far less power and cooling
than legacy switched network designs
Our solution reduces HEPA tenting
requirements; 1 piece of fiber replaces 4 copper
cables

An IBM Smarter Healthcare Network allows you to reclaim legacy wiring closets for
critical care and additional beds.
Legacy switched networks require dedicated
wiring closets with proper power and
environmental controls
The IBM Smarter Healthcare Network requires
far less space, power, and cooling saving you
money and allowing you to reclaim space for
critical care and additional beds which
generate revenue
The IBM Smarter Healthcare Network is a
much simpler design which is far easier to
manage than a legacy switched networkLegacy IDF Smarter IDF

Passive Optical LAN technology also requires dramatically less cabling saving you
money on material and installation costs.
Legacy copper based network architectures require
far more cabling due to the distance limitations of
copper cabling
In an IBM Smarter Healthcare Network the cabling is
primarily fiber based which requires far less space
than legacy switched based designs which rely
heavily on copper cabling
This 36” cable tray was installed for a legacy copper
design. Only 10” of the tray was used after the client
decided to switch to the IBM Smarter Network instead
of the originally planned legacy copper based design.

Passive Optical LAN equipment can be located in the ceiling or floor giving you
space back for beds and critical care.
Eliminate traditional wiring closets with passive
splitters that require no power or cooling
Zoned architecture greatly reduces any cabling adds
or changes
Plug-and-play pre-terminated fiber assemblies reduce
installation times and HEPA tenting
Reclaim valuable space as legacy wiring closets are
no longer required

The IBM Smarter Healthcare Network includes a fiber optic Distributed Antenna
System for 5 bar in building cellular coverage.
An internal Distributed Antenna System (DAS) allows you to
provide 5 bar cellular coverage inside your building
The IBM Smarter Healthcare Network optionally includes a
fiber-based DAS which allows for easy upgrades as required
– When a wireless carrier introduces a new frequency,
simply swap out a card in the remote access units
Advanced features such as capacity steering allow you to shift
cellular capacity to different areas of your building as
employees move around…Smarter!
