    JANNEYAPPOINTED TO AIRPORTAUTHORITY

In a recent story in the San Diego Reader written by Susan Luzzaro, it was reported thatJim Janney was appointed to the Airport Authority by the four southbay Mayors December1st, just days before his term as Mayor ended. Jim Janney was one of the 4 Mayors presentat Greg Coxs monthly Mayors and City Managers luncheon. While Janney made approxi-mately $1200 a month as Mayor of Imperial Beach, the appointment to the airport authoritycould mean a very big raise in pay. Some of the quotes in Luzzaro's story are worth readingthe Reader story.

Other Mayors that voted for Janney included termed out Mayor Cheryl Cox of Chula Vista,Casey Tanaka of Coronado, Ron Morrison of National City and Jim Janney himself. $10,000 SIGN?At a recent City Council Meeting, Councilman Spriggs asked thatthree items be pulled from the Consent Agenda. Normally Con-sent Agenda items are voted on Aye or Nay with no discussion. The items that were pulled were discussed at the very end of themeeting. One of the items Councilman Spriggs questioned was a$10,000 payment for a single sign! He wanted to know how onesign could cost $10,000?

Mr. Spriggs was told that it was a commemorative sign for theCoronado Beltline Railroad that once circumvented San Diego Bayand passed through Imperial Beach. Spriggs said that he didntknow we had a railroad?

Why would they spend $10,000 for a sign that might be worth$400? The answer is simple.

ANNUAL PEARL HARBOR MEMORIAL HELDON PORTWOOD PIER

December 7th marked the 73rd anniversary of Pearl Harbor. The Imperial BeachFleet Reserve Association Branch 289 hosted their annual Pearl Harbor Memorial onthe Portwood Pier. At 8am, Charles van Valkenburgh, whose grandfather CaptainFrank Valkenburgh was commanding officer of the USS Arizona and Bill Landryfrom Fleet Reserve 289 delivered words from the heart and memories of those

loved and lost at Pearl Harbor. Members of the 82nd Airborne Division AssociationsSan Diego All Airborne Chapter Honor Guard provided attendees with a buglerplaying taps and firing the 21-gun salute. The Naval Junior ROTC cadet color guardfrom Mar Vista High School, Coronado Amphibious Command Battalion and a colorguard were also there to present the flags. Veterans and members of Fleet Reserve289 performed the laying of the wreath ceremony. As the ceremony ended, I waslucky enough to meet Betty L. Young, who was 9, lived right next to the gates atHickam Field and her father worked on base during the attack. She told me her andher familys story and survival. She told me when the planes flew over her house, they were so low she could see the eyes in the faces of the pilots. Her final wordsto me was the prayer she said that day God, please remember me. The ceremonywas beautiful and I left with a very somber and thankful heart. For everyone whoever has and ever will serve our country, I Thank You. I would like to encourageyou to mark your calendars and attend the annual Pearl Harbor Memorial next year.It will be on December 7, 2015 at 8am on the Portwood Pier. Let us never forgetour fallen heroes. -Jeannette Shambaugh

    City Council Notes .....

During the meeting Greg Wade gave anupdate on the Palm Avenue Master Plan.I.B. Local News has posted CALTRANSdocuments commenting on how muchthey dont like the Palm Avenue MasterPlan and what their specific objectionsare to parts of the plan.

Wade also confirmed as we previouslywrote that the City is investigating RE-LINQUISHMENT OF SR-75 to the City. One of the arguments made for RELIN-QUISHMENT or SURRENDER of theright-of-way was that SR-75 is redundantand not necessary since it parallels I-5!

The proposed Bernardo Shores projectwill add hundreds of autos each day andthe expanding Navy Campus will involve3500 people and approximately additional8900 traffic trips per day on SR-75 thatdo not currently occur. Wade seems tothink all the problems can be solved bysynchronizing traffic signals. If that weretrue, why cant they synchronize the sig-

nals now? It takes way too long totraverse Imperial Beach on a State High-way now and they want to narrow thelanes and lower the speed limit too.

Its this writers opinion that SANDAGPLANNERS AND CITY PLANNERS

NEED A REALITY CHECK. IfCALTRANS tells them they cant lowerthe speed limits and narrow lane widthsof an already over-crowed State High-way, do they really think they can takeover the highway through the process ofrelinquishment and do it anyway? And willthey sever part of TSUNAMI EVACUA-TION ROUTE and DETOUR IT at Dela-ware-Palm and SR-75? It appears thatway. Stay tuned and attend the next pub-lic workshop on the Palm Avenue Mas-ter Plan January 15th

Additional documentation on the MasterPlan is available on the website or the City of Imperial Beachswebsite. - By Ed Kravitz

    WINTERFEST

While Serge Dedina was being sworn in as the new Mayor of Imperial Beach before a capac-ity crowd at City Hall, there was another very inspiring event going on just down the street atMar Vista High School. On December 10th, the South Bay Union School District Musicians,

performed in their Annual Winterfest Concert showcasing bands from a vast array of schoolsfrom the SBUSD. There was no admission fee for attendance as in the past years, althoughdonations were accepted. The SBUSD Band Program has been performing in the AnnualWinterfest Concert since 1991, as we welcome our communities Holiday Season.

Stephen Ball, Mike Pretzer and Emmanuel Soto, the Band Directors, conducted a ChristmasHoliday song festival performed by cadet, beginners, advanced, jazz, concert, and combined

band with all the groups playing Midnight Madness together for the finale.

Approximately 155 student musicians performed in the Mar Vista High School Gymnasiumfrom the Elementary, Middle School and High School bands and featured an amazing trumpet

solo by Anais Gaunin; the daughter of the owners of Cow-a-bunga. The Imperial BeachWomens Club made a donation of $100 to each of the three bands that performed.

A fundraising table was manned by Coley Hayes and Brian Brooks to help raise money tosupport the bands. There was also a cookie dough project this year as well as selling water,

pom-poms, buttons and seat cushions to help raise funds for bands.

Maybe their next performance should be a community concert at Pier Plaza. -Barbara Pretorius

    LOCAL HEROES READ TO KIDS

Every Wednesday, the Imperial Beach library hosts community story time for kids. But on December 10th, the kids were in for a treat! Our own local heroes, DetectiveJanine Alioto and Deputy Joseph Garay from the San Diego County Sheriffs Depart-ment were there to meet with and read to the kids. The officers learned each and everychilds name, if they were on the naughty or nice list and what their wishes were forChristmas. The children were wide eyed and excited to meet these heroes. Some ofthe kids were even brave enough to let the officers know that they wanted to grow upand be just like them! The officers then enjoyed a very animated and interactive storytime.
