    OVERVIEW - EXAMINATION SCHEME

    EXAMINATION SUMMARY

    The Indian Civil Services examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) every year.

    The examination schedule is announced during January - ebruary a!ter "hich the selection is done in3 stages.

    Candidates are #ltered at every stage through a $rocess o! elimination.

    The com$etitive examination com$rises o! three successive stages %

    The Prelims are held in &ay-June and the results are announced in July-'ugust.

    The &ain examination is held in ctober-ovember and the candidates "ho

    *uali!y at this stage are invited to the intervie" in &arch-'$ril next. The #nal

    recruitment and $osting o! candidates de$ends on their ran+ing and the

    available vacancies !or di,erent $osts to be #lled during that $articular year.

    Students need to #rst a$$ly !or the Preliminary xamination only. Candidates

    "ho are declared by the Commission to have *uali#ed !or admission to the &ain

    xamination "ill have to a$$ly again in the /etailed '$$lication orm "hich

    "ould be su$$lied to them.

    Preliminary Examinai!n

    ThePreliminary Examination"ill consist o! t"o $a$ers o! objective type (multiple choice questions) and carry a

    maximum o! 400 marks.This examination is meant to serve as a screening testonly.

    nly those candidates "ho are declared by the Commission to have *uali#ed in the Preliminary xamination in theyear "ill be eligible !or admission to the &ain xamination o! that year $rovided they are other"ise eligible !or

    admission to the &ain xamination.

    The mar+s obtained in the Preliminary xamination xamination by the candidates "ho are declared *uali#ed !or

    admission to the &ain xamination "ill not be counted !or determining their #nal order o! merit.

    The number o! candidates to be admitted to the &ain xamination "ill be about t"elve to thirteen times the total

    The ob>ect o! the intervie" is to assess the $ersonal suitability o! the candidate !or a career in $ublic service by a

    3oard o! com$etent and unbiased observers.

    4e0she "ill be as+ed *uestions on matters o! general interest.

    The test is intended to >udge the mental calibre o! a candidate.

    In broad terms this is really an assessment o! not only his intellectual *ualities but also social traits and his

    interest in current a,airs.

    Some o! the *ualities to be >udged are mental alertness critical $o"ers o! assimilation clear and logical

    ex$osition balance o! >udgement variety and de$th o! interest ability !or social cohesion and leadershi$

    intellectual and moral integrity.

    The techni*ue o! the intervie" is not that o! a strict cross-examination but o! a natural though directed and

    $ur$osive conversation "hich is intended to reveal the mental *ualities o! the candidate.

    The intervie" test is not intended to be a test either o! the s$ecialised or general +no"ledge o! the candidates

    "hich has been already tested through their "ritten $a$ers.

    Candidates "ho have $assed the #nal $ro!essional &.3.3.S. or any other &edical xamination but have not

    com$leted their internshi$ by the time o! submission o! their a$$lications !or the Civil Services (&ain) xamination

    "ill be $rovisionally admitted to the xamination $rovided they submit along "ith their a$$lication a co$y o!

    certi#cate !rom the concerned authority o! the University 0 Institution that they had $assed the re*uisite #nal

    $ro!essional medical examination. In such cases the candidates "ill be re*uired to $roduce at the time o! their

    intervie" original /egree or a certi#cate !rom the concerned com$etent authority o! the University 0 Institution that

    that year is over and he0she continues to be a member o! that service he0she shall not be eligible to a$$ear in the

    Civil Services (&ain) xamination o! that year not"ithstanding his0her having *uali#ed in the Preliminary xamination

    o! that year.

    I! a candidate is a$$ointed to I'S0IS a!ter the commencement o! the Civil Services (&ain) xamination o! that year

    but be!ore the result thereo! and continues to be a member o! that service he0she shall not be considered !or
