I reported to Ninth Peoples Hospital onDecember 14th. The department of oral andmaxillofacial head and neck surgery is veryhospitable. The department is very big withspecialized units for every sub-speciality in thespectrum of OMS. The wards are sophisticatedand the system of education is extremelysystematic for learning, growth andopportunities for young surgeons. Whatamazes me is that they are enthusiastic inresearch, in basic and clinical sciences, alongwith skill development for surgery.

Language is certainly a barrier; however; everyone is warm and extremely helpful tooutsiders. Culturally, Indians and Chinese aresimilar in many ways, and I can say that I feelat home here. I have made great friends, nativeof different continents, along with Chinesecolleagues providing me with an opportunityfor global insight.

My training guide, Prof Tong Ji, took us to aConfucian Temple at Jiading over one of theweekends. The temple is the relic of system ofeducation and merit based selection process forbureaucratic posts in China, which was a verysuccessful model for hundreds of years. This temple shows the insight of the studentteacher relationships, commitment of scholars and reward to virtues in medieval Chinawhich explains the prosperity and unity of thecountry for thousands of years.

My experiences here have been wonderful. The teachers are dedicatedtrainers teaching their best. The colleaguesare fun loving and helpful, and all of it hasbeen much better than my expectations. Moreover, they encourage and provide mewith the resources for clinical research forour team and so far we have beenproductive in many clinical studies in thefield of head and oncology.

My focus of learning from this fellowshipis micro-vascular reconstructive surgery. My previous work experience of 4 years inthe head and neck oncology surgery, priorto this fellowship, prepares me to receivethe best of reconstructive surgery trainingin this period of one year. I am providedwith ample opportunities and training tolearn. The department performs 4 to 5 freeflaps every week and they are one of thelarge volume centers in the world whichgives me a unique opportunity of numberswith quality training.

I am confident of accomplishing the goalby the end of this year at the current paceof learning and opportunities.

It is my pleasure to share my experience of theongoing fellowship at this center. I joined thedepartment on September 18, 2015.Peking University Hospital of Stomatology isthe center of excellence for reconstruction thatI expected it to be.

It was definitely a very difficult first fewweeks as everything around me had changed.Be it the language, food or the culture, butwith a lot of people trying to help, it sure startsfeeling like a family.

It does take some time to make friends due tothe inability to speak a common language butit's fun and I did manage to make a few friendswho help a lot in understanding the proceduresgoing on. Faculty members are also veryapproachable and helpful which makes it mucheasier. Beijing is a beautiful city and so isChina. I found some time during the springbreak to go all around Beijing.

The great wall, Forbidden City and thesummer palace and my visit to Harbin wasreally refreshing (ice and snow exhibition).

The center has so much to teach that in mypersonal opinion, I wish this fellowshiplasted longer than one year. But for my lastsix months here, I hope to learn at a greaterpace than before as now we are used toeach other and I do understand a bit moreof the language.

As far as surgeries are concerned, it's theplace one would want to be! A lot ofpathological resections with microvascularreconstruction is routine. As was myinterest, I have been an active member ofthe reconstructive team and am learning toperform those procedures all by myself.Their techniques are a little different thanones I know and also time tested so surelyI'm trying my best to pick them up.

The encouragement from the faculty isvery motivating and I hope the next sixmonths will be great for learning. I'mlooking forward to working at my Centerback home with more precision andsuccessful reconstruction for my patients.

THE FOUNDATIONTRIADEBY LARRY W . NISSEN

IAOMS FOUNDAT ION CHA IRMAN

These principles can be referred to as the Foundation

Triade and even though they may be separate, they all

are interdependent. These principles are Talent, Time

and Treasure. Without understanding the importance of

these three, it is difficult to maintain continual growth of

the organization.

The first principle, Talent, is easy to explain – it refers to

the people who are available to present the many

programs that our Foundation provides. Fortunately, the

IAOMS is blessed with many exceptionally gifted Fellows

who understand that sharing knowledge is critical in

achieving the mission of the Foundation and Association.

The willingness to provide expertise in the various areas

of the specialty is universal to our specialty and allows a

variety of speakers that are able to present in all areas of

the world.

Time is the second principle, and relates directly to the

first. Not only do we have talented individuals to present,

they are willing to take the Time to prepare lectures,

travel to various venues, often in remote locations, and

provide educational experiences that will be invaluable

to the attendees. Many of us who do not lecture may not

readily understand the commitment that our speakers

have or the number of hours required to provide these

outstanding programs.

The third principle, Treasure, can be interpreted to have

two parts. The first part, encompasses the first two

principles. To have a cadre of knowledgeable Fellows that

are willing to share their expertise and time to provide

exceptional educational experiences is truly a major

portion of the IAOMS Treasure. The second part of our

Treasure is - of course - the financial resources that our

Fellows and corporate partners provide. The past two

years have been the best in the history of our Foundation

with the KLS Martin Group Challenge Grant and our

Fellows and friends giving over $100,000 per year in

donations. The generous pledges to the Laskin Legacy

Society will also help to better solidify future donations.

As we have discussed in the past, building the corpus of

our Foundation allows the Board to predictably budget for

future programs. Even though we have had great

successes in the past two years, it is somewhat troubling

that these donations came from less than 10% of our

membership. If we were to triple or quadruple the number

of donors, iwe could see an even greater impact on the

corpus of our Foundation, and provide further educational

experiences around the world.

Looking forward in 2016, I ask that each member commit

to the Foundation Triade. We need your Talent, your Time

and your Treasure, in order to meet the educational

challenges of the world and better achieve the mission of

the IAOMS Foundation.

After two eventful years at the IAOMS Foundation, I thought it would be helpful to review the

three cornerstones of a foundation.
