REBUILDING TRUST will be my NO.1 PRIORITY

PUTTING VICTIMS FIRST Victims and those in fear of crime need to

know that I will always put their needs and rights ahead of the criminals.

ASKING THE TOUGH QUESTIONS The old way led to too many

cosy relationships where no one dared ask the probing questions. I am untainted by

past association with the local councils, so bring a fresh and independent approach.

SUPPORT THE POLICE to do their job without political interference

and ensure they have all the tools and resources they need to protect us.

    1. Freeing police to ght crime bycutting red tape and scrappingunnecessary targets.

I want to ensure there is a consistent

approach across all of South Yorkshire so

that best practice can be shared and rolledout for the benet of all. We need to

    re-examine the divisional structures which

are too closely aligned to local authority

boundaries and which have led to both

higher overhead costs and in cases

    ineffective relationships with local

authorities. We have seen all too clearly

that this arrangement was vulnerable tonot serving victims well.

    2. Giving criminals toughersentences so communities areprotected and justice is done.

I will work with the many excellent

    rehabilitation organisations which work

so hard to break the cycle of reoffending.I will though support efforts for tougher

sentencing to be upheld and lobby hard for

a crackdown on early releases so that our

    communities are better protected from

    repetitive offenders.

    4. Stopping people becoming

criminals by tackling the rootcauses of crime.

I will develop links with other partnerorganisations, such as local authorities, the NHSand the many voluntary organisations thatwork to support people in need. I have beena trustee of a charity helping disadvantaged

youth. In the NHS I have focussed on improvingpeoples different life expectancies between the

poorest and the richest areas. Additionally, I seethe value of encouraging environments thatsupport strong and stable families so that ourchildren develop their self-worth and are lessexposed to vulnerable situations where theycould be exploited.

3.Giving police the powers theyneed to tackle criminals, using thelatest tools and techniques.

Police funding is under pressure and, if elected,I undertake to lobby the Home Secretary tosupport South Yorkshire with further resourcesbecause of the particular and historic challengeswe are facing, so that nothing detracts from theneeds of current day victims.

I will ensure that the police are given theresources tools and access to best techniquesand best practices that they need to do a

    world class job.

In particular, I commit to fully supporting thepolice in the tough jobs they do to serve usall and do all I can to build their morale, whilstbeing a supportive, but where necessary acritical commissioner.

I will ensure that the role of the police isnot politicised and that the needs of allcommunities ,rural or urban, whatever ethnic orreligious background, whether rich or poor, get

    the same treatment and support.

    IANS5 POINT PLAN

    5. Making police answer to thecommunity to help drive downcrime in your area

My priority will be to rebuild trust for allcommunities and crucially between allcommunities. Every community has a fewbad apples and every community knows the

kind of people these are and want supportfrom the police to nip bad behaviour andanti-social behaviour in the bud. This is notleast in order hold up the good name of eachcommunity and not bring dis-honour on them.

No community wants to continue to suffer thedrip-drip effects of the anti-social behaviourof a few making their lives a misery. I will workwith you to get these priority messages to

the police. I will be your servant in ensuringthe police serve you in the way you need andwant.

I will furthermore ensure that there are easierways for victims to come forward to reportcrimes in safe environments where they will be

treated with respect, sensitivity and listened toseriously.
