Iaido and Jodo:Introduction to Traditional Japanese Martial ArtsWednesday, December 4th, 2019 / Ninomiya House Salon (9th floor)

This event is a demonstration and introduction to the Japanese martial arts known as Iaido (居合道) and Jōdo (杖道). Unlike martial arts such as karate (空手), these two traditional martial arts are focused on the use of weapons. Iaido is the art of drawing and cutting with the Japanese sword, moving through different forms, or kata. Paired techniques use wooden sword, or bokken. Jōdo, which originally developed to counter a sword, focuses on the use of the jō, or short staff, and involves paired forms, practiced with a partner. This event will include a demonstration, or enbu (演武), of both Iaido and Jodō techniques, and a discussion on the history of both martial arts. Iaido and Jodō as practiced today involve a standard and modern style and more classical and older styles, known as koryu (古流). This event will include demonstra-tions of both modern style, known as seitei, and classical styles of Musō Jikiden Eishin-ryū (無双直伝英信流) Iaido and Shinto Musō-ryū (神道夢想流) Jōdo. Participants will have the opportunity to try basic techniques for both Iaido and Jodō.Lecturer Dr. Gina Konstantopoulos (University of Tsukuba, Iaido and Jodo 2-dan)

居合道と杖道─日本伝統武芸入門─ 2019年12月4日（水曜日）／二の宮ハウス9F交流サロン

このイベントでは居合道と杖道の二つの日本伝統武芸を実演しながら紹介します。居合道と杖道は16世紀に創始された日本の古武道を現代武道化した

ものです。空手のような武道と異なり、この居合道と杖道は使用する武具の動作、決められた手順の形を決める演武で行われます。居合道は、演武者が鞘から日本刀を抜き放ち、さらに鞘に納めるまでの一連の決められた動作を、一つの独立した形とした日本独自の武道です。杖道は、演武者が仕杖と木刀を持つ打太刀をそれぞれ使用して演武を行います。今回は標準で現代のスタイルと古典的な古流スタイルについて、伝統武芸の演武と歴史を紹介し、現代の制定スタイルと無双直伝英信流居合道と神道夢想流杖道の演武を行います。参加者は居合道と杖道の両方の基本テクニックを試してみるいい機会です。
