Famous for publishingsuch writers as Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, William Burroughs, Alan Watts, Timothy Leary, BuckminsterFuller, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti, the tabloid also was well-known for its artwork, graphic designs, andrainbow colors. Editor Cohen, who was one of the paper's founders, contributes a fascinating history of thepublication and its creators and contributors. It is remembered for it's extraordinary graphic design by major SanFrancisco artists, its rainbow colors and the cultural explorations and breakthroughs in its articles, interviewsand poetry. At its height, over 120,000 copies of each issue of The Oracle were printed and distributed, andeach copy was read by many people. The Oracle is quoted and praised in most of the histories of the 60's.Writers who appeared in The Oracle include: Gary Snyder, William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Alan Watts,Stephen Levine, Lenore Kandel, Tim Leary, Michael McClure, Paul Krassner, Buckminster Fuller, CarlRogers, Richard Alpert (Ram Dass), Robert Theobald, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and others. But I love the Haight Ashbury movement, what theycontinued, what they started, what they finished, the questions, the answers, music, paintings, tolerance andfailure, religion, psychedelic trips and mind exploration. LSD and banana joints. The art and articles aregreat..., Snyder, Leary, Guinsberg, Kandel... If you are interested in the beat generation, the hippies or theKesey connection, just buy it.

My only regret was that they chose a smaller page size thanthe bound volume but at about $900.00 difference I will live with that.The San Francisco Oracle

CarruthAfter viewing Allan Cohen's slide show history on the "Haight-Ashbury in the 60s" CD-Rom, I decided tobuy the SF Oracle Facsimile Edition. It is a beautifully crafted treasure trove, which allows you to go back intime and revisit the days of Haight-Ashbury in its purest form, from the point of view of the artists andmystics of the day.Though I was only 12 years old during the Summer of Love, I used to shop on Haight Street until one day Iwas told I couldn't go down there anymore because of the Hippies. Of course I went anyway, and becamehooked on the colorful posters and music. Let this book be your guide to a really interesting time in ourhistory.
