11 DECEMBER 1984 MEHUCEA I11 HIGHLIGHTS By Tom S t a v e The results are now in from Menucha 111, and we can now t e l l those who missed it what they missed, and reveal what those who made it to the Conference thought of it. Ninety-five librarians attended the Annual Joint Oregon/Washington Chapter conference on October 25-26. Demographically speaking, there were 65 women and 30 men; 66 were Oregonians, 27 were from Washington and elsewhere. ,-- Early on in the conference it appeared that we might learn some rather unexpected things, beyond mere demographics, about each other and ourselves: how many of us, for example, believed in ESP, or the Holy Ghost, or whether the world had another five years before a nuclear war. Seat-squirming questions like these, posed by keynote speaker Robert Theobald (who demanded a show of hands), were not meant to make his audience comfortable, but rather to produce the sort of discomfort that stimulates change. Change was the keynoter's theme: our society is headed for a future that we probably won't like--charact erized by instability and a much larger class of dispossessed, alienated people-unless we are willing to in£ luence it. The messages for academic librarians were that in the post-industrial communication society" those whose role it is to provide access to information have the most significant opportunities to affect the direction of the future, and the most productive arena for inciting positive change is at the local, grassroots level. Theobald identified some issues he believes librarians and others who deal in information must address: 1)If access to information is linked to the ability to pay, we will create a class of people who are permanently cut off from participation in society. 2)Given the explosion in the amount of information produced, librarians must make more judgments about which information is truly important. 3 )Our educational system must stop imparting in£ ormation and become committed to preparing people to learn how to learn; to bring about change, we must enable people to change. 4)Private ownership of information is no longer either socially or

- TEN YEAR ~ I V E B S A R Y

1985 represents the ten year anniversary of the Oregon Chapter of ACRL. Perry Morrison and Richard Heinzkill have agreed to write a chapter history and plan to finish it by January.

There are plans afoot for an anniversary party to be held August 22, 1985, following the Academic Library workshop at PNLA. The party wil'l feature refreshments and a salute to past officers of the chapter.

H e r e w e c o m e a g a i n ! O S S H E u n d e r the s p o n s o r s h i p of its Interinstitutional Library Council is presenting Orenon Online '85 - New Trends. New Challenges. Mark January 25, 1985 as the date for the follow up to last year's very successful information retrieval conference. Be at OSU's Steward Center in Corvallis for an outstanding program.

The program will focus on new developments for enduser searching--the systems, the software available, the impact of patron-conducted searches. A second theme looks at new technologies in online retrieval-downloading and the growing number of full text databases. In addition, there will be new sessions on the popular subject of search strategy formulation.

Join the Oregon information community. Registration is set at $20 per person.

A Reg-ional Collection Development Institute will be held in the Pacific Northwest on September 3-6, 1985. The Institute will be held on the.campus of the University of Washington in Seattle.

The Collection Development Institutes, sponsored by the Resources Section of ALA's RTSD, have been held in other parts of the country; this will be the only Institute in the Northwest.

The Institute is an intensive, four-day workshop designed to assist librarians in learning more about all aspects of collection development, with emphasis on skills which can be used in the librarian's own institution. It is the goal of the Pacific Northwest Institute to offer programs of interest to librarians in public, special, and community college libraries, as well as academic libraries .

More specific program information, and costs (which are being kept low through the use of the University of Washington's dorms), will be available in 1985. Any questions about the Institute should be directed to Mrs. Linda

r . Gould, Chair, Planning Committee, Collection Development Institute, University

of Washington Libraries, Seattle, WA 98195.

JOIBT HEETIBG WITH OCCLA SLATED

ACRL-Oregon Chapter and the Oregon Community College Library Association will co-sponsor a winter meeting on Friday, February 22, 1985, at Chemeketa Community College Library. Speakers will discuss risk management and the program will allow time for discussion. Registration and coffee will be at 1:00 p.m. and the program from 1:30 to 4 p.m. For additional information call Pat Silvernail, University of Oregon Library, 686-3056.

The Inter institutional Library Counci 1, Oregon State System of Higher Education, has hired two consultants to provide information for planning a library automation system. Richard Boss, Maryland, and Joseph Matthews, California, each met with members of the ILC and the Chancellor's office staff in November to discuss factors to consider during the planning stages.

As recently announced in the media, the Governors Budget requests $6 million in program improvement funds to implement an integrated automated

- library system for OSSHE libraries.
