This is the second year we have received these scholarships, and we owe them to the good will of Frank Kozel, retiring Senior Vice President, and the hard work of alumnus Lisa Gnibish ‘94. Scholarships are awarded to Communi cation Systems Management majors in good standing, who have demonstrated financial need, have a grade point average of at least 3.0, and have completed the first four courses in the CSM curriculum. Current recipients are seniors Regina Sewell and Nathan Peters. Selections for next year’s scholarships will be made this spring. New Faculty The Communication Systems Man agement faculty will fmally be at full staff winter quarter. Philip Dale Campbell will be joining the faculty as an assistant professor. Phil has been the Product Development Manager at Cintech TeleManagement Systems in Cincinnati, where he worked on cost allocation and ACD software products. Prior to joining Cintech, he held several positions at Telco Research in Nashville, Ten nessee. Phil has a B.S. in Astronomy from the University of Michigan, an M.S. in Physics from Louisiana State University, and an M.S. in Astronomy from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Before going into industry, Phil taught astronomy and physics at Louisiana State, thó State University of New York at Stony Brook, and Valparaiso University in Indiana. Communication Week

Plans are heating up for thisspring’s Communication Week. This

year we are departing from tradition.Instead of Wednesday, our day ofCommunication Week will beTuesday, April 30th. The theme forthis year’s Communication Weekdeals with communication andcommunity.

Faculty Activities

We’re all keeping busy trying to stayon top of a very quickly changingfield. Hans Kruse, after working forNASA in Cleveland last summer, gave apresentation on satellite technology tothe PROMS 95 Conference in Salzburg,Austria, in October.

Varadharajan Sridhar presented apaper at the International Federation ofrations Research Conference on Operations Research and EngineeringDesign in St. Louis in October.

Trevor Roycroft was on a panel onthe impact of local telephone competition in Ohio; the panel took place inDayton and was sponsored by the Cityof Dayton, the Legal Aid Society ofDayton, and three state senators.

One of the last acts of Congress’ Office of Technology Assessment, before

it fell to the budget ax, was to releaseGlobal Communications: Opoortunities

Trade a report for whichPhyllis Bernt served as a reviewer andcontributor.

Homecoming: LuckyFriday the 13th

Our experiment this year worked.Instead of competing with parades andfootball games on Homecoming Saturday,we held a reception on Friday afternoon,October 13th. It may have been Fridaythe 13th, but we felt pretty lucky becauseof the folks who dropped by:

The Advisory Board, at its fallmeeting October 26th and 27th,presented two panels for our studentsdealing with the impact of LocalCompetition. The first panel discussiondealt with LEC providers; the secondpanel covered business customers andtelecom suppliers.
