252 I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud
I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud
by William Wordsworth
BACKGROUND William Wordsworth was an English poet who lived from 1770–1850. He believed that poetry can occur when people get in touch with a memory and relive the experience long after it has occurred. Wordsworth also believed that nature is the best teacher. This poem describes a special moment in nature.
I wandered lonely as a cloudThat floats on high o’ er vales1 and hills,When all at once I saw a crowd,A host, of golden daffodils,Beside the lake, beneath the trees,Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. A
Continuous as the stars that shineAnd twinkle on the Milky Way, They stretched in never-ending lineAlong the margin of a bay;Ten thousand saw I at a glance,Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced, but theyOutdid the sparkling waves in glee; B
A poet could not but be gay,In such a jocund2 company;
1. vales (VAYLZ): valleys.2. jocund (JAHK UHND): merry.
