SYNOPSIS

ACT I

At a street parade to honour the successful return of the consul

Crassus from war in Thrace, his conquered prisoners are paraded

through the streets. Among them is Spartacus and his wife Flavia;

the couple are sold at a slave auction. Crassus claims the beautiful

Flavia for himself, and Batiatus, the local gladiator trainer, buys

Spartacus for the ring along with his friend Hermes.

Batiatus trains the slaves to be fierce fighters, and both friends

quickly rise to the same rank as Crixus, Batiatus’ top gladiator.

Spartacus dreams of a simple, dignified life with Flavia - instead, he

is selected to fight against Hermes in gladiatorial games to honour

Crassus. Forced to kill his friend in the arena and horrified by his

deed, Spartacus is spurred to rebellion and incites his fellow

captives to break free of their chains.

ACT II

Flavia endures life as a slave in Crassus’ villa, where the powerful

consul indulges his every whim. The rebels force their way in,

rescue Flavia and confront Crassus. On the point of killing him,

Spartacus chooses mercy; he and his followers flee the villa.

ACT III

Spartacus shares a moment of passion with Flavia as the rebels

exult in their freedom – but he knows their happiness will be

fleeting. Crassus has summoned his legions to seek vengeance on

them. After a long and bitter fight, the Roman army eventually

overpowers the rebels, who fight courageously to the end. They

are sentenced to death by crucifixion and Flavia, who has

escaped the clutches of Rome, vows that Spartacus’ memory will

live forever.

TAPAHTUMAT

I NÄYTÖS

Suuri paraati järjestetään Traakian sodasta palaavan konsuli Crassuksen kunniaksi, ja sotavankeja kuljetetaan pitkin katuja. Vankien joukossa ovat myös Spartacus ja hänen vaimonsa Flavia; pariskunta aiotaan myydä orjahuutokaupassa. Crassus ostaa kauniin Flavian itselleen, ja gladiaattorivalmentaja Batiatus hankkii Spartacuksen ja hänen ystävänsä Hermesin.

Batiatus kouluttaa ostamistaan orjista gladiaattoritaistelijoita, ja uudet hankinnat nousevat pian suosikeiksi Batiatuksen huippugladiaattorin Crixusen rinnalle. Spartacus uneksii yksinkertaisesta elämästä Flaviansa kanssa, mutta unelmansa toteutumisen sijaan hänet määrätään taistelemaan ystäväänsä Hermisä vastaan. Hänen on pakko tappaa ystävänsä areenalla, ja teostaan kauhistuneena Spartacus nostattaa orjat kapinaan.

II NÄYTÖS

Flavia elää orjana Crassuksen kartanossa. Kapinalliset tunkeutuvat taloon, pelastavat Flavian ja kohtaavat Crassuksen. Mutta Spartacus on armollinen; hän pakenee kartanosta saaliineen ja ystävineen.

III NÄYTÖS

Spartacus ja Flavia kokevat hetken yhdessä kapinallisten iloitessa menestyksestään - mutta ilo jää lyhytaikaiseksi. Crassus on kutsunut joukkonsa kostamaan orjille. Seuraa hurja taistelu, jonka roomalaiset joukot lopulta voittavat. Kapinalliset tuomitaan ristiinnaulittaviksi, ja Rooman ikeen alta paennut Flavia vannoo ettei Spartacuksen nimeä milloinkaan unohdeta.
