Newsleer from Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and School As you reflect upon previous events in your life—gatherings, graduations, weddings, birthdays, business, kids, careers, vacations, and visits. Do you wishfully think: If only I had a little more time? More time with my kids. More time with my elder- ly parents. More time to relax and enjoy life. With a slight sense of regret and quick glance at what may seem like a schedule fuller than ever, you may feel like throwing up your hands and shouting, I need more time! Jesus said, I have come that you may have life and have it to the full (John 10:10). You might be thinking that your life is full enough. You do not need more things to do. You need more time! But Jesus is not talking about do- ing more things. Jesus is talking about a fulfilling life that has a purpose from beginning to end and into eternity. Jesus entered our world 2000 years ago. Je- sus purpose in life was simple. He came to earth so that when our time on earth comes to an end, we shall spend eternity with him in heaven. In order to make that happen, Jesus lived every moment of every day in perfect obedi- ence to his heavenly Father. His life tempo- rarily ended at the cross when he suffered the punishment of sin for all people of all time. Just three days after his death, Jesus came back to life in order to proclaim his vic- tory over death and his gift of life with God. What a full life Jesus gives to us! We do not need to be weighed down by the guilt of our past—things we have regretfully done or left un- done. Jesus came and lived a per- fect life in our place. We have confidence for the future because Jesus is already at the fin- ish line, waiting to welcome us into heaven. Life is no longer about cramming as much as possible into every day. Rather, life is about liv- ing each moment of every day in gratefulness to our Savior Jesus. Need more time? Spend time with Jesus. Get to know him through his Word. Discover the fullness of his love and purpose for you. While he may not give you the additional hour(s) you were hoping for each day, Jesus will help you to make the most of the time God gives to you. I Need MoreTIME

As you reflect upon previous events in your life—gatherings, graduations, weddings, birthdays, business, kids, careers, vacations, and visits. Do you wishfully think: “If only I had a little more time? More time with my kids. More t ime with my elder-ly parents. More time to relax and enjoy life.” With a slight sense of regret and quick glance at what may seem like a schedule fuller than ever, you may feel like throwing up your hands and shouting, “I need more time!” Jesus said, “I have come that you may have life and have it to the full” (John 10:10). You might be thinking that your life is full enough. You do not need more things to do. You need more time! But Jesus is not talking about do-ing more things. Dear friends and family

    of faith,

    Donna and I thank

    you so very much for

    all your Christian kind-

    nesses this year.

    You generously give

    from hearts touched by

    God’s gracious Word.

    We warmly thank you

    for your special Christ-

    mas gifts and remem-

    brances.

    We truly appreciate

    such thoughtfulness.

    Together with your

    prayers, they are truly

    a fragrant offering to

    our Lord Jesus Christ

    and we thank you for

    extending such an hon-

    or to an honor.

    The Lord Jesus bless

    you and your families

    throughout this year!

    Alive in Jesus!

  • Happy 2019,

We are starting a new year. As we enter a new phase of our life, we often stop and take

stock of our health. This January, I want you to assess your spiritual heath. You may find

that you need a workout. “But you, dear friends, continue to build yourselves up in your

most holy faith as you keep praying in the Holy Spirit. Keep yourselves in God’s love as you

continue to wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ, which results in eternal life” (Jude 20-

21). What can you do to “build yourself up?” To build your faith you need to be in the

    Word and in prayer.

You can be in the Word when you attend weekly worship services. “Let us not neglect

meeting together, as some have the habit of doing. Rather, let us encourage each other,

and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10:25). Attending worship ser-

vices is an intentional act. It does not just happen without some effort. Regular church at-

tendance becomes more than a habit, it becomes a necessity to your state of mind. If

you miss a week, it seems like something is wrong. When attending church, you hear Bible

readings and a sermon. But, you can become more active in God’s Word by staying for

the Bible study following our Sunday worship service.

You can build up your faith by cracking open the Bible and completing personal study of

God’s Word. “All Scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, for rebuking, for cor-

recting, and for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, well

equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Studying the Bible is good for your faith,

but also for equipping you. You benefit in at least two ways when you study. There are

many ways you can do personal Bible studying. A convenient way is to use the “Our Daily

Bread” devotional books that are placed in your church mailbox. If you don’t have a

copy, you can order a no cost copy at www.odb.org/signup. Reading a One Year Bible is

another way to regularly study God’s Word. I like a chronological one year Bible. You can

sign up for a daily online devotion. You can visit a Christian bookstore and find a book on

a topic specific to your interests. There are so many opportunities, you simply need to pick

    one that fits your style.

Maybe music is your thing. You can sing Christian hymns in your home or listen to Christian

radio. “Shout to the LORD with joy, all the earth. Serve the LORD with gladness. Come before

him with joyful songs” (Psalm 100:1-2).

You can build your faith through prayerful conversations with God. God invites us to pray

and we can be assured that he always hears us. “This is the confidence that we have be-

fore him: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he

hears us—whatever we ask—we also know that we receive the things we have asked from

    him” (1 John 5:14-15). What a comfort!

It is up to you to incorporate healthy practices for your spiritual health into your life. Some-

one else cannot do the “faith bodybuilding” for you. Make a plan for your spiritual health

and use it in 2019 and always.

May God bless you with a healthy 2019,

    Kathy Lee, RN

  • After this Job lived a hundred and forty years; he saw his children and

their children to the fourth generation. And so he died, old and full of years.

    Job 42:16-17

The book of Job ends on a note of contentment and peace. Job may have been about seventy when

his history opens. So we know he was way beyond his teen years. The past few years of his life had enough

heavy burdens to grind down anyone into a crushed and bitter pile of dust. Yet the last picture God re-

veals of His man is a picture of peace, a contented man. God had greatly blessed him and Job trusted God

    and was grateful.

You receive this newsletter in the year of our Lord 2019. Ahead stretches a new beginning. The

old is past, put away forever. No time machine can bring back a single week. With that in mind, the Lord

God, our Savior, invites us always to put aside all the distrust and fears. Jesus was with us all last year and

never abandoned us. Jesus urges us to gather up all those burdens, to roll all the anxieties of the past onto

His shoulders. Jesus promised to take and carry all the resentments we have been holding against others,

the grudges, the criticisms. Look closely as you roll those matters onto Jesus’ back. See the scars from the

whippings? Jesus endured suffering and death to pay off our sin-debt He so lovingly carries for us.

I am so thankful the Savior is mighty to save. I am so thankful that Jesus fully and freely forgave

people. I am so thankful Jesus rose from the dead and in His Word freely and faithfully assures people of

peace with our heavenly Father, now and forever. I am so thankful that we regularly gather together to re-

mind ourselves of these precious truths. God freely revealed them in His Word and then graciously created

    faith to believe Him.

The question that hovers over us after reading this book (and I feel it deeply in my own heart)

is, On what basis am I going to live in this new year God gives me? Will it be on the old basis of it-all-

depends-on-me, do-it-yourself goodness before God, trying my best to be pleasing to God and meaning it

with all my heart but never realizing the depths of evil with which my heart and life is burdened?

Or will it be on the new basis of God’s renewing Word and Sacraments? Shall I trust the gifts of

God that He so generously gives me? Think: what is waiting for me every day, fresh from His hand? Gifts

of forgiveness! treasures of His righteousness already mine! joys and wisdom yet to come! Will I go on the

road He, my dear Father, has chosen for me, His blessed child? Hmmm. Which road? which way?

So I think: Every day God fully and freely for-

gives my sin. Every day He fully and freely provides all

I need. Every day He fully and freely gives His own

wisdom and strength. Every day His plan is to bless me

to turn from evil and turn to Him who is the Truth and

    Life. So, this I pray:

Lord, let this year be one in which my life will be char-

acterized by Your peace. In my actions, let people catch the

scent of the spices generously given to You by the Magi. Let

the scents connected with the spices wrapped in Your grave-

cloths on Good Friday touch my words. Jesus, I don’t want to

be like those fickle-friends of Job. They aroused Your wrath

with their half-truths. Heavenly Father, You are patient. But

that does not mean You want me to play around with sin. Re-

mind me of Jesus, my perfect substitute. Move me to bear

bushel-baskets of blessings, an ongoing thanks giving. Amen.

How are we going to walk together into this new year and beyond? Joyfully in faith take

hold of Jesus’ nail-marked hands. Hold onto God’s Word and all His blessings freely given to

us. Walk in joyful confidence into the year God has laid before us. From my family to you and

yours, happy walking! Alive in Jesus!

God’s Blessings in the New Year!

Thank you Children: Thank you to all of the children of Good Shepherd for helping us give glory to our Savior, Jesus Christ, during this past Christmas sea-son. The efforts of all involved helped edify our worship as we remember that His birth led to His redeeming sacrifice on the cross and His glorious resurrection, whereby we all are assured of eternal life. Praise be to our

    Savior-King!

Looking Ahead to the New Year: It seems like school just started, but it already time to begin preparations for enrollment for the 2019-2020 School Year in both our 3K and Ele-mentary School. Our Christ-centered curriculum provides an education that prepares our students for both their eternal lives and living lives of service as they journey heavenward. Priceless!

As always, first priority is given to our congregational member families. Please talk to Mrs. T. for the Elementary School and Amanda Irwin for the 3K program if you would like your children to attend our Chris-tian school at Good Shepherd.

    CHRISTIAN LIFE RESOURCES NEWS

Recently, Pastor Robert Fleischmann visited our church, giving a sermon and conducting Bible Study. He is the National Director of Christian Life Resources and, although he is serving as Pas-tor at St. Paul’s in Slinger, WI, he remains a strong leader in pro-life programs such as New Begin-nings – A Home For Mothers, oversee’s counseling centers throughout the nation, speaks at many events and conferences, and creates educational writings on the subjects of abortion, infanticide, doctor assisted suicide, and the like.

On January 22, 2019, we will observe the anniversary of the infamous Roe v. Wade decision that made abortion legal. Since then, we have lost millions of potential doctors, pastors, teachers, edu-cators such as Pastor Fleischmann, technology experts, musicians, moms and dads, and so many others who would have contributed to our nation and the world.

Yes, through education, abortion rates have declined in America; however, abortion still remains a means of birth control in our nation and the world. For whatever reason a woman decides to abort her baby, we can pray to end abortion. Most specifically, we should pray for changed hearts. As Pastor Fleischmann indicates, our prayers should include the request that Christians recognize the burden of an unplanned pregnancy and that they are moved to help carry that burden. Pray that you might find the strength, the courage and the means to share the Christian message of for-giveness and salvation through Christ.
