"I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by." (from Sea Fever by John Masefield, 1900)

Logical Thinking Process Course

T he Logical Thinking Process Course is designed to make those who complete it skilled in the Logical Thinking Process, a

set of graphically-represented logic trees cre-ated by E.M. Goldratt known as the thinking process. This thinking process is designed to help the “system navigator” determine the: ■ Ultimate goal of the organization ■ Critical success factors and major necessary con-

ditions required to achieve the goal ■ Magnitude and direction of the gap between

where the organization is currently and its ulti-mate goal

■ Critical root causes for the gap ■ The direction of the “course correction” required

to eliminate the deviations between what is hap-pening and what should be happening to reach the goal

■ Specific initiatives that must be completed to

assure goal attainment ■ Execution plan The Five Logic Trees Training requires the mastery of five logic trees needed to develop and deploy strategy: Intermediate Objectives Map. Establishes a Goal-Critical Success Factor-Necessary Condi-tion hierarchy as a benchmark for assessing change. Current Reality Tree. Reveals root causes of the undesirable outcomes or performance we see in any system—the constraint preventing improved performance. Evaporating Cloud. Identifies and resolves both overt and hidden conflict perpetuating root causes of undesirable outcomes. Helps create new, lasting solutions to chronic problems.

Future Reality Tree. Structures a “master change plan” and verifies that proposed solu-tions will work before resources are invested in them. Identifies possible adverse side-effects of the proposed solution and ways to prevent them. Prerequisite Tree. Uncovers obstacles to execu-tion of the change plan and helps create ways around the obstacles. Time-sequences the indis-pensable actions required to overcome the ob-stacles. The Constraint Management Model (CMM) The five logic trees represent the first five steps in a dynamic change management process called the Constraint Management Model.

Schedule The Logical Thinking Process Course covers six days. Normally, these days are scheduled con-tiguously, in two blocks of three days separated by a two-day weekend. However, schedules can be tailored to suit a client’s needs.

What others say... Goal Systems International is a thinking process pioneer. Dettmer has taken the methodology to new levels. His training of Six Sigma belts at Seagate Technologies has fundamentally changed the way problems are analyzed and solutions are developed. We now see Six Sigma in ways we'd never have thought of without his contributions. Our use of the thinking process is now strategic, rather than just tactical. The Dettmer approach to the thinking process is built into Seagate Six Sigma training.

—Christopher M. Zephro Director of Worldwide Supply Chain (Formerly Six Sigma Senior Master Black Belt and Lean Master) Seagate Technologies, Ventiva Corporation

Getting strategy right isn't a matter of luck. Goal Systems International showed us a way to ap-ply the logical thinking process to develop a living strategy.

—Dave Kaser Raytheon Six Sigma Master Dettmer has made an important contribution to competitive strategy by unifying and demon-strating, for the first time, the power of both the Logical Thinking Process developed by Goldratt and the OODA loop (observe-orient-decide-act). Operating together, they will be very, very hard to beat.

—Chet Richards, Ph.D. Author of Certain to Win and international expert on the philosophy of John Boyd The Logical Thinking Process is a practical approach to improving any system’s performance… Many standard tools for continuous improvement fail to achieve noteworthy results at a macro level. Why? Because too often, the problems to which the tools are applied are local in nature. The tools, and the problems to which they are applied, do not address the greatest constraints holding back the system as a whole. The Logical Thinking Process is a must-have tool in the arsenal of any continuous improvement effort.

—Paul H. Selden, Ph.D. Founder and president, Performance Management, Inc. Author of Sales Process Engineering
