Our High Point Independence Day festivities are shaping up nicely. While there are many whose contributions to this effort deserve to be recognized, we owe a special debt of gratitude to Syvia Pistorius for all of the help and guidance she has continued to give based on her years of experience with the Parade, and especially so following the loss of her beloved husband, George. We love you, Sylvia! Don't forget that following the Parade, the Golf Club is putting on a July 4 th Barbecue. All are welcome! Also, visitors and guests are welcome to enjoy our lovely pool free of charge on that day. You may have already seen one of the posted notices concerning the Baltic Building (High Point Welcome Center) construction bids. If not, there is a copy on the next page of this newsletter. For those who are wondering, just a reminder that the funds for this project are coming out of the proceeds held in escrow from the Fire Dept dissolution (as their original Charter called for any assets to become the property of the HOA) and will still leave a considerable amount of surplus in those monies. There will be no additional outlay of High Point Community funds for this renovation, which was approved by the voting membership in last December's annual election. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to stop in and I will be happy to address them. Looking a bit farther along (though not as far off as you make think), we need a firm commitment from anyone willing to take charge of the Annual Thanksgiving Dinner. This is a treasured tradition in High Point, but one that requires a great deal of volunteer participation and good leadership. We already have names of quite a few who are willing to be helpers. It’s very important that we know as far as possible in advance who can be counted on to chair the Committee. Please give this careful consideration and if you are willing to take this project on, give me a call. Am I wishing our lives away, or what? HIGH POINT VETERANS MEMORIALBy Ray Thomas

First, I want to give you the answer to the question most of you have been asking, “When will the brick I ordered behere?” I was informed that we will be receiving them in the first week of July. After we receive the bricks, we have tolay them out and go through each one to make sure the spelling is correct before applying them to the wall. Our plan isto start affixing the bricks to the wall about the third week of July.

I have placed our second order this week and when they arrive we will be getting them placed on the wall sometime inAugust. If you have missed out or procrastinated in buying an “In Honor/In memory of” brick, it’s not too late! We willcontinue to take orders for bricks.

If you are interested in helping with placing the bricks on the wall, please give me a call. It would be nice to have a poolof about 6 or 7 people to call when we need help. My phone number is 352-397-6473.

We are now a month into PHASE II, which is to install a paver walkway from the curb to the plaque podium, to be knownas the Veterans Support Walkway. The goal is to make it easier for everyone including our handicapped residents to beable to approach the memorial and view the plaques and the memorial up-close.

This project began with us selling 12X12 inch pavers which will be placed on the ground between the parking lot curband the plaque podium.

There has been a lot of questions and confusion on just what can be put on a paver. So, I have created an example bookwith some ideas of just how you could layout your paver. The book is available in the office, at Dime Jingle or bycontacting myself or Ron Keiper, 570-216-6915.

Unlike the brick wall, this project is limited to 63 Pavers to complete the walkway. So, if you’re thinking of honoringsomeone in your family or want to show your support for our veterans, please take the time to get an order form and fillit out. If you have any questions or ideas please call me and I will help as much as I can to make your Paver appropriatelypersonalized. If you are non-military and could not purchase a brick for the wall, this is a great way for you to participatein the community Veterans Memorial project and show your support by purchasing a Paver.

Another question I get a lot is: If I purchased a brick for the wall does that mean I cannot buy a Paver to show supportof all Veterans? The answer is YES—You can purchase a Paver.

REMEMBER ONLY 63 PAVERS TO COMPLETE THE PROJECT. For Pavers without clip art you have 8 lines of 20characters each, and you can put anything you want on these pavers, and the cost is $60.00. For pavers that use clip art,you are allowed 7 lines of 20 characters each, and one piece of clip art. The cost is $66.00.

So, if you have been wanting to get involved with the memorial project, please stop by the officeto pick up an order form for you or your organization and turn in your completed form to theoffice along with a check made out to High Point, with a note on the memo part of your checkfor “Veterans Support Walk”.

On behalf of all High Point Veterans, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT.

Beware of people bearing gifts. The following is a recounting of the incident from the victim:Wednesday a week ago, I had a phone call from someone saying that he was from some outfit called:"Express Couriers." (The name could be any courier company) He asked if I was going to be homebecause there was a package for me that required a signature. The caller said that the delivery would arrive at my home in roughly an hour. Sure enough, about an hourlater, a uniformed delivery man turned up with a beautiful basket of flowers and a bottle of wine. I wasvery surprised since there was no special occasion or holiday, and I certainly didn't expect anything likeit. Intrigued, I inquired as to who the sender was. The courier replied, "I don't know, I'm only deliveringthe package." Apparently, a card was being sent separately... (the card has never arrived!). There wasalso a consignment note with the gift.He then went on to explain that because the gift contained alcohol, there was a $3.50 "delivery/verification charge," providing proof that he had actually delivered the package to an adult (of legaldrinking age), and not just left it on the doorstep where it could be stolen or taken by anyone, especiallya minor. This sounded logical and I offered to pay him cash. He then said that the delivery companyrequired payment to be by credit or debit card only, so that everything is properly accounted for, and thiswould help in keeping a legal record of the transaction. He added couriers don't carry cash to avoid loss or likely targets for robbery. My husband, who by thistime was standing beside me, pulled out his credit card, and 'John,' the "delivery man," asked him toswipe the card on a small mobile card machine with a small screen and keypad. Frank, my husband, wasasked to enter his PIN number and a receipt was printed out. He was given a copy of the transaction. Theguy said everything was in order, and wished us good day.TO OUR HORRIBLE SURPRISE, between Thursday and the following Monday, $4,000 had beencharged/withdrawn from our credit/debit account at various ATM machines. Apparently the "mobilecredit card machine," which the deliveryman carried now had all the info necessary to create a "dummy"card with all our card details including the PIN number.Upon finding out about the illegal transactions on our card, we immediately notified the bank whichissued us a new card, and our credit/debit account was closed. We also personally went to the Police, where it was confirmed that it is definitely a scam because several households had been similarly hit.WARNING: Be wary of accepting any "surprise gift or package," which you neither expected norpersonally ordered, especially if it involves any kind of payment as a condition of receiving the gift orpackage. Also, never accept anything if you do not personally know or there is no proper identificationof who the sender is.Above all, the only time you should give out any personal credit/debit card information is when youyourself initiated the purchase or transaction! If you suspect that you or someone you know has been the victim of some type of scam or consumerfraud, call the Hernando County Sheriffs Department at (352) 754-6850.

Protecting Yourself FromUnlicensed Contractors

Information provided byHernando County Building Div.

www.hernandocounty.us/bldg/

Hernando County Building Division wants all residents to be aware of the dangers of dealing with unlicensedcontractors. Unlicensed contractors can be very persuasive in convincing the public that they are licensed when infact they are not. These individuals are often overcharging for work, accepting deposits and never completing work,or doing work without applicable permits where they are required. To bring structures into compliance when thishappens, property owners must spend additional monies to hire a Licensed Contractor and sometimes Engineers toobtain the required permit(s) to complete the work.

Most often unlicensed contractors do not carry liability and workers’ compensation insurances as required by Stateand local laws. Owners can be held liable for medical expenses when unlicensed and/or uninsured individuals becomeinjured on their property. Don’t be a victim! Call 352-754-4050 if you are in doubt about someone who wants todo work for you.

HIGH POINT MATTERS

JULY!!July 4th, Vacations, Vacations, etc., etc.!!

Our July 4th Parade Committee - Susan, Corinne and their “Crew of Helpers,” are working for a bigger parade withmore activities, raffles, drawings, prizes, etc. All at the Community Center following the Parade. All are welcome, come and celebrate with High Point!

Our Parade Marshals, Ray Thomas, Ron Keiper and Wayne Johnson represent the “Best of High Point.” Theirdedication to and creation of the beautiful Veterans Memorial in front of the Community Center is most commendableand much appreciated. Thank you guys, and your helpers, for your service and dedication to your Country and toyour Community!

Even with community activities slowing down for summer, many things are going on behind the scenes. Plans toimprove the looks and facilities around the Horse Shoe Pits are in the early planning stages. Bids for the conversionof the Baltic Building (old Firehouse) may be finalized by now and work will hopefully begin soon.

There are Common Areas where erosion mitigation issues are being addressed. The Community Center will be closed,as always, the last two weeks of August for thorough cleaning and repairs. Floor surface restoration was completedin June.

New signage has been installed that enables us to enforce “trespass” violations through the Sheriffs Office. If yousee questionable behavior, call Hernando County Sheriff’s Office immediately, not a day or two later! Skateboardershave been a recurring problem, and suspicious persons or activity that looks “out of the norm” should be reportedASAP. Better to be safe than sorry!

The Board of Directors and Office Staff are working on a system to record and mark unlicensed, unregistered vehiclesin the compound that are used “for storage only.” These changes will be further explained in the Compound Rulesand Regulations.

We homeowners need to commend Ken Thompson and his crew on the outstanding job they’ve done to create abeautiful entrance area into our High Point Community. It now behooves each of us as homeowners to make the sameeffort to improve our own properties.

The “migration North” by some homeowners leaves us with fewer eyes to watch our community. Remember, ourage group are the “prey.” The predators are con artists, scam artists, thieves and burglars. Covered cars, unkemptlawns, etc. are possible signs of vacancy - targets for crooks! We all need to be more aware of our own property andour neighbors’ vacant homes. Be especially aware of unlicensed contractors looking for work. Never - Ever give asupposed contractor money for work “to be done.” Very likely you’ve thrown dollars away! Keep your doors, bothcar and home, locked at all times and never let someone that you don’t know or who is unsolicited into your home, especially if you are alone! If you are approached by someone who seems suspicious, call the Sheriff’s Officeimmediately - Be safe and don’t be a victim!
