eJournal
Before we go in more detail,
we have to define – eJournal!
eJournal used in Boston
meaning EHR = electronic health record
eJournal ≠ eHealth
Application of Electronic Journals in Patient Care
Electronic Journal (Boston eJournal)
- patient response
before office visit
- connected internet patient portal
at Partners HealthCare Boston, US
- Patients used it for
- clinical information
- answer /questions in preparation
for a face – to – face visit
Wald JS et al J Am Med Inform Assoc 17: 502 506, 2010
Use of patient gateway (PG) secure electronic healths record (EHR)
developed by Partners HealthCare, Boston, USA
11 primary care study practices – 121.045 pts
21.533 pts with PC account invited

Future of the Boston eJournals
- Improvement of flow of
structured and unstructured data
Advanced eJournal capabilities
- Tailored chart information
- Instructional reference information
- Communication tools
- Display of items like family history

Innovation: Paul Ginsparg preprint server for physics (arXiv) in
part to supersede a multinational email distribution list for
preprints that had been operated manually by Joanne Cohn for
about two years. It started in August 1991 as a repository for
preprints in physics and later expanded to include astronomy,
mathematics, computer science, nonlinear science, quantitative
biology and, most recently, statistics.[5]
It soon became obvious that there was a demand for long term
preservation of preprints. The term e-print was adopted to
describe the articles. Ginsparg was awarded a MacArthur
Fellowship in 2002 for his establishment of arXiv.

History of eJournals: story of Association of
Research Libraries (ARL)
It was originally hosted at the Los Alamos
National Laboratory and called the LANL
preprint archive. Its original domain name
was xxx.lanl.gov. It is now hosted and
operated by Cornell University,[6] with 14
mirrors around the world.[7] It changed its
name and address to arXiv.org in 1999 for
greater flexibility.

Association of Research Libraries (ARL)
All significant STM journals on the WWW
All significant STM journals linked & interlinked
• A&I services are primary gateways
Significant enrichment beyond print
The library expected to be (and is) everywhere
Librarians customize information for their users
and so do publishers
Archiving solutions sought by publishers and
librarians together - the barrier to dropping print

Problems related to eJournals
- Long term availability unclear
- Long term archiving
- Updating of computer hard and soft ware
- National Library in Leipzig stores printed version
and E-only journals and scientific weblogs and
scientific Internet pages
- Medical library in Cologne (ZB MED) stores a printed
version from all available print journals
Application of Electronic Journals in Patient Care Electronic Access and Hospital Libraris: timely access
A. For hospital libraries in Rochester:
It changes diagnosis, diagnostic tests,
drugs and therapies with avoidance of adverse events
Marshall JG Bull Med Libr Assoc 80: 169-178, 1992
