ABOUT THE I-DEAS TO ABAQUS/CAE GEOMETRY TRANSLATOR
1. I-DEAS to ABAQUS/CAE Geometry Translator User’s
Guide
1.1 About this manual
This manual provides information for systems administrators on how to install and configure the
I-DEAS to ABAQUS/CAE geometry translator. The installation instructions require some familiarity
with basic UNIX or Windows systems administration. The manual also provides information for
end-users on how to create an ABAQUS Elysium Neutral File from I-DEAS and how to import that file
into ABAQUS/CAE.
1.2 About the I-DEAS to ABAQUS/CAE Geometry Translator
The I-DEAS to ABAQUS/CAE geometry translator allows you to transfer the geometry of an I-DEAS
model to ABAQUS/CAE. The translator consists of the following two components, as shown in
Figure 1.2–1:
• The I-DEAS to ABAQUS Elysium Neutral File writer. The I-DEAS to ABAQUS Elysium Neutral
File writer is an I-DEAS plug-in that creates an ABAQUS Elysium Neutral File (.enf_abq). Theplug-in is available at no cost from the ABAQUS web site. You must have I-DEAS installed and
licensed to run the plug-in.
• The ABAQUS/CAE reader. The ABAQUS/CAE reader imports an Elysium Neutral File generated
by the I-DEAS plug-in. The reader can be purchased from your local ABAQUS sales office.

4. Installing the I-DEAS to ABAQUS Elysium Neutral File
writer
4.1 Installing the I-DEAS to ABAQUS Elysium Neutral File writer on
Windows
The following procedure describes how you install the I-DEAS to ABAQUS Elysium Neutral File writer
on Windows systems. You need administrator privileges to install the writer.
1. Download the ZIP file from the ABAQUS web site (www.abaqus.com).
• ABAQUS Version 6.5 (www.abaqus.com/products/ElysiumPlugIns.html)
• ABAQUS Version 6.4 (www.abaqus.com/products/ElysiumPlugInsV64.html)
2. Extract the contents of the ZIP file to a new directory.
3. Make the new directory the current directory, and enter setup to execute the I-DEAS to
ABAQUS Elysium Neutral File writer setup program. By default, the install script copies files
and subdirectories into the current directory; however, you can specify an alternative destination
directory.
During the installation, you will be asked to supply the following information:
– If the setup program detects any I-DEAS to ABAQUS Elysium Neutral File writers on your
system, you should delete them before continuing.
– If the setup program detects more than one version of I-DEAS, it asks you to choose the version
with which you will install the plug-in.
– Your user and company name.
– The destination folder, as shown in Figure 4.1–1.
You can install the plug-in anywhere on your hard drive; it does not have to be associated with
the I-DEAS directory tree.
– The components to install.
Click I-DEAS to/from ABAQUS, as shown in Figure 4.1–2.
– A program folder, as shown in Figure 4.1–3.
This is the item that will appear in the Windows Start→Programs menu. You use this menu
item to start the version of I-DEAS with the ABAQUS Elysium Neutral File writer installed.
4.1.1 Changing the I-DEAS start directory on Windows
To change the I-DEAS startup directory and to point to the I-DEAS to ABAQUS Elysium Neutral File

INSTALLING THE I-DEAS TO ABAQUS ELYSIUM NEUTRAL FILE WRITER ON UNIX SYSTEMS
4.1.2 Configuring files to run the I-DEAS to ABAQUS Elysium Neutral
File writer
To complete the installation of the I-DEAS to ABAQUS Elysium Neutral File writer, you must copy the
following files from the installation directory to your I-DEAS startup directory:
• ideasoastart.sh
• userApp.cfg
If the files already exist in your I-DEAS startup directory, you may need to merge the contents of the
files in the installation directory with the contents of the files in your I-DEAS startup directory.
4.1.3 The Open I-DEAS daemon
The Open I-DEAS daemon translates a file from I-DEAS to an ABAQUS Elysium Neutral File and
is started automatically when your Windows workstation is rebooted. This daemon was added to the
Windows Control Services during installation and is called the “Open I-DEAS Server” in I-DEAS
Master Series 9 or Master Series 10 NX.
4.2 Installing the I-DEAS to ABAQUS Elysium Neutral File writer on
Unix systems
The following procedure describes how you install the I-DEAS to ABAQUS Elysium Neutral File writer
on Unix systems. You need super-user privileges to install the writer.
1. Download the ZIP file from the ABAQUS web site (www.abaqus.com).
• ABAQUS Version 6.5 (www.abaqus.com/products/ElysiumPlugIns.html)
• ABAQUS Version 6.4 (www.abaqus.com/products/ElysiumPlugInsV64.html)
2. Expand the contents of the ZIP file, and extract the contents of the resulting tar file to a new
directory.
3. Make the new directory the current directory, and start the installation script. The command to start
the installation script depends on the UNIX platform. For example,
HP-UX: /absolute path to directory/hp/install/setupIRIX: /absolute path to directory/sgi/install/setup
4. The installation script indicates that existing files in the current directory will be overwritten. The
script then asks the following questions:

d. The installation script indicates that it is installing the I-DEAS/ABAQUS Data Translator.
Enter c to continue.
e. Enter n to indicate you have finished selecting products to install.
f. Enter y to confirm that the list of selected products is correct.
g. Enter the version of I-DEAS on your system.
4.2.1 Configuring files to run the I-DEAS to ABAQUS Elysium Neutral
4.2.2 The Open I-DEAS daemon
To translate a file from I-DEAS to anABAQUSElysium Neutral File, youmust start up the Open I-DEAS
daemon called “orbixd.” The following command checks to see if this daemon is running:
ps -ef | grep orbixd
If the daemon is not running, do the following (requires super-user privileges):
cd IDEAS_INSTALL_DIRECTORY
./bin/setup_varbsorbix/install
If a different version of I-DEAS coexists with the current version, you may see the following error
messages:
Error: Detected an orbid process from another source.

FIXING PROBLEMS WITH MODEL DATA
6. Troubleshooting
I-DEAS tips
The following tips will help prevent errors during the translation process.
• Do not create tiny elements in I-DEAS. Tiny elements can prevent the creation of a closed solid,
which can cause face trimming to fail.
• Do not create “sharp” features in I-DEAS. Sharp features can create different faces from the original.
Fixing problems with model data
If an imported part does not appear in ABAQUS/CAE or if the part is only partially imported, there may
be additional steps you can take.
In general, problems with translated data can be caused by the following:
• Errors in the I-DEAS solid model.
• Restrictions in the Elysium translator runtime environment; for example, memory or swap space.
If you contact Elysium technical support, you must provide any error messages displayed in
ABAQUS/CAE along with any error messages displayed by the Elysium translator.
