Mark 14:26, 32-42

Jesus knew His

future:

Matt. 20:18-19 NKJV "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and

the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to the

scribes; and they will condemn Him to death, (19) and deliver

Him to the Gentiles to mock and to scourge and to crucify. And the

third day He will rise again."

Mark 14:26 NKJV And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Late Thursday April 6, 30into

Early Friday, April 7, 30

Mark 14:32-42 NKJV Then they came to a place which was named Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, "Sit here while I pray." (33) And He took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to be troubled and deeply distressed. (34) Then He said to them, "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch." (35) He went a little farther, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him.

Mark 14:32-42 continued (36) And He said, "Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will." (37) Then He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, "Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not watch one hour? (38) Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." (39) Again He went away and prayed, and spoke the same words.

Mark 14:32-42 continued (40) And when He returned, He found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy; and they did not know what to answer Him. (41) Then He came the third time and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough! The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. (42) Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand.”

Luke 22:39 Coming out, He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him.

John 18:1-2 When Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples over the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered. (2) And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; for Jesus often met there with His disciples.

John 13:27 NKJV Now after the piece of bread,

Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to

him, "What you do, do quickly.”

one hour?

Matthew 26:42-44 Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying, "O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done." (43) And He came and found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy. (44) So He left them, went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.“And they did not know how

to answer Him.” (Mark 14:40)

Luke 22:43-44 Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. (44) And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

Commonly referred to as hematidrosis or hemohidrosis (Allen, 1967, pp. 745-747), this condition results in the excretion of blood or blood pigment in the sweat. Under conditions of great emotional stress, tiny capillaries in the sweat glands can rupture (Lumpkin, 1978), thus mixing blood with perspiration. This condition has been reported in extreme instances of stress (see Sutton, 1956, pp. 1393-1394). For example, a young girl who had a terrible fear of air raids during World War I

developed the condition after a gas explosion occurred in the house next door to hers (Scott, 1918). Another report details that after being threatened by sword-bearing soldiers, a Catholic nun “was so terrified that she bled from every part of her body and died of hemorrhage in the sight of her assailants” (von Grafenberg, 1585). During the waning years of the twentieth century, 76 cases of hematidrosis were studied and classified into categories according to causative factors: “Acute fear and intense mental contemplation were found

to be the most frequent inciting causes” (Holoubek and Holoubek, 1996). While the extent of blood loss generally is minimal, hematidrosisalso results in the skin becoming extremely tender and fragile (Barbet, 1953, pp. 74-75; Lumpkin, 1978), which would have made Christ’s pending physical insults even more painful. James 5:16 ESV Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.

Mark 14:41-42 NKJV Then He came the third time and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough! The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. (42) Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand.”

1 Peter 5:5-7 Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for "GOD RESISTS THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE." (6) Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, (7) casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

1 Peter 4:7 ESV The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers.

1 Corinthians 16:13 ESV (13) Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.
