Padre, todos los elementos de la naturaleza obedecen tus órdenes. Protégenos a nosotros y a toda tu gente durante esta temporada de tormentas y huracanes.

Calma nuestros miedos y ayúdanos a preparar nuestros corazones y nuestros hogares. Ayúdanos a verte en todo

lo que podamos encontrar, y ayúdanos a atender las necesidades del uno al otro en tu nombre. Te lo pedimos

por Cristo nuestro Señor, Amén. Durante la temporada de huracan todos debemos estar al tanto y permanecer preparados. Como norma, queremos recordarles que la polí tica de la Iglesia, para mayor seguridad de todos, es que cuando el serví cio meteorolo gico notifique que estamos en estado de Peligro de Huracan TODAS las actividades Litu rgicas esta n automa ticamente canceladas. Cuando el estado de “Peligro” cese, entonces trataremos de resumir nuestras funciones y actividades litu rgicas segu n las normas de la Iglesia. Por favor presten atencio n a los avisos de los servicio s meteorolo gicos para asi no poner sus vidas en peligro cuando vengan a adorar a nuestro Sen or en su Casa. Hurricane Season Prayer

Father, all the elements of nature obey your commands. Protect us, and all your people during this season of

storms and hurricanes. Calm our fears, and help us to prepare our hearts as well as our homes. Help us to see you in all we may encounter, and help us to minister to each other inyour name. We ask this through Christ our

Lord, Amen.

During hurricane season we all need to be vigilant and remain prepared. We wish to remind all that the Church’s policy, for the safety of all concern, is that as soon as a Hurricane Warning is posted by the weather service ALL liturgical activities are automatically cancelled. As soon as the weather service lifts the state of “Warning,” we shall attempt to resume our normal liturgical functions. Please be tuned to your weather channel updates so as not to place your life in peril in coming to worship in the House of God. Many blessings and please be safe.

Juan 6:24-35

Este domingo continuamos leyendo del sexto capítulo del Evangelio de Juan, pero no continuamente. Nuestro Leccionario omite el informe de Juan sobre el caminar de Jesús sobre el agua. Gospel Reflection

John 6:24-35

This Sunday we continue to read from the sixth chapter of John’s Gospel, but not continuously. Our Lectionary omits John’s report of Jesus’ walking on water. This event is reported much less dramatically in John’s Gospel than in the Synoptic Gospels. After the feeding of the multitudes, the disciples leave in a boat and Jesus follows them. The disciples are said to be terrified by what they see. Jesus reassures them and rejoins them. In today’s Gospel, we learn that the crowd has noticed the departure of Jesus and his disciples and so seeks them out in Capernaum. In the dialogue that follows between Jesus and the crowds, Jesus unfolds for us the gift of himself that that he gives in the

Eucharist.

In today’s Gospel, there are four exchanges between Jesus and the crowd. In the first, the crowd, having followed Jesus to Capernaum, asks a very matter of fact question: “Rabbi, when did you get here?” Jesus replies by naming their motivation in pursuing him. They have been fed. Jesus acknowledges this, yet challenges them to see beyond the fulfillment of their material needs. The crowds have followed Jesus because they have been fed. They ought to be seeking out Jesus because he can give them eternal life.

As the second dialogue begins, it seems that the crowd might be on their way to accepting Jesus and his mission. They ask: “What can we do to accomplish the works of God?” Jesus replies that they must have faith in the one sent from God. But in the third dialogue, the crowd reveals their inability to see Jesus’ true identity. They ask Jesus for a sign so that they might know that Jesus is from God. How strange this sounds since Jesus has just fed more than 5000 people. What more is expected?

But the crowd cannot see beyond the surface of the sign. They show this in their interpretation of the sign that came from Moses. In their description, they identify Jesus with Moses, as if to say, as Moses gave the people manna in the desert, give us a sign so that we will know that you are from God. They are looking to identify a prophet without realizing that God is standing before them. Jesus corrects their misinterpretation, saying that the manna received by their ancestors came from God. As God fulfilled their ancestors’ needs in the desert, so God has provided them with food for eternal life. In the bread that they have received from Jesus, they have received physical nourishment and also spiritual nourishment. Jesus wants the crowd to see beyond the surface to the One who provides true nourishment.

The conclusion of the dialogue reveals the crowd’s blindness. They ask for what Jesus has just told them they have found: “Sir, give us this bread always.” Jesus answers plainly that he himself is the Bread of Life they seek. Jesus himself is the Bread of Life who will satisfy every hunger and thirst. This is the first of several such statements found in John’s Gospel. We understand these better when we remember that God revealed his name to the people of Israel as “I am,” as Yahweh. Jesus is now claiming this name for himself. In the weeks ahead, we will see the offense that this gives to the people.

Amor en Acción Amor en Acción is a missionary community of the Archdiocese of Miami, formed in 1976 by a group of young immigrants. They were inspired by the principle of “faith without actions is dead” (James 2, 14), seeking ways to share that love they experienced in Christ with those living in poverty

and suffering oppression. The group was officially established as a lay missionary community, working early in the Dominican Republic with the blessing and sponsorship of then Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy. In 1979 his direction and guidance led Amor en Acción to begin collaborating in Haiti, as the missionary arm of the Archdiocese of Miami in its Sister Diocese relationship with the Diocese of Pot-de-Paix in Haiti. Today with the blessing and guidance of Archbishop Thomas Wenski, that relationship of solidarity with our Sister Diocese continues, and also in other areas in Haiti and in Dominican Republic. It is the personal encounter in Christ experienced by members in short term mission trips and ongoing reflection, which fuels the missionary zeal and also the long term commitment to projects of evangelization, education, nutrition and devel-opment. Amor en Acción continues to be primarily a volunteer missionary effort, enriched by its roots in a migrant story, and called to live mission in ordinary life, in extraordinary ways. They will be visiting St Brendan August 18th & 19th.
