VDOT Notes

15
VDOT Notes (contd) Notes based on quick check on the locations where the 1980s widening of I-
95 was done to the outside, providing a full-depth left/inside shoulder (where the left-hand GP lane had previously been located).
For about of the length of the segment, a full-depth of 12 wide is present and should be available for use as a fourth GP lane.
For the remainder, the width of full-depth on the left shoulder varies from 12 down to 0 (or nearly 0).
Normally, beyond the existing full-depth shoulder (where present), there is 5 1/2 of graded shoulder, then the graded median slope.
The construction of a Standard Shoulder would require approx. 9 of additional width.
The existing median width appears to be a minimum of 88 wide (near the 126 Interchange), so it should be feasible to utilize some of this space for the widened shoulder(s).
All of these measurements should be verified, in the field.
-
16
VDOT Notes (contd) Opening between the piers of the Harrison Rd overpass are 60. The
addition of a 12 lane would not be possible, as minimum shoulder widths could not be achieved. This would likely require the reconstruction of the overpass as part of any widening project.
Pier spacings at the Rte 208 overpass appear to be adequate to allow for an additional lane and shoulder.
