Halal Certificate Body in Korea

• KMF(Korea Muslim Federation) - Cross-accreditation with Malaysia(JAKIM)- Cross-accreditation with Indonesia(MUI), UAE(ESMA), Singapore(MUIS) planned

• KMF certificates issued(as of July 2015) - 155 producers, 524 product items- 6 restaurants

• KMF halal logo

Korea’s Entrance into Halal Market

• 155 food companies(524 products) with the KMF halalcertificate

• 14 companies(264 products) certified by foreign bodies- Number of companies in top 10 country halal certified by MUI: Korea is ranked 5th

• Korea’s total agro-food product exports in halal market: $860 mill. in 2014 - $490 mill. as of July, 2015(0.8% ↑ compared to the same period of 2014)

Korea’s Entrance into Halal Market:Limitation

• Exported items are limited to a few items such as cooking oil, noodle, etc.- need to be expanded to other processed food products, including Korean traditional food products

Challenges

• Investments in R&D - Develop ‘alcohol reduction techniques’ in Korean traditional fermented foods(sauces and pastes)

• Investments in plants- Dedicated lines and equipments etc.

• Limited cross-certification between KMF and other certificate bodies overseas- Cross-certification only with Malaysia’s JAKIM

• Consumer education and communication- halal as safe and clean foods- Non-Muslims are increasingly interested in halal food products
