WARNING: ENGINE EXHAUST CAN BE DANGEROUS!

Engine exhaust gases are potentially lethal. If at any time engine exhaust gas is detected within the passengercompartment, move the vehicle to an open area and open all windows.

o Never inhale exhaust gas.Exhaust gases contain Carbon Monoxide which is colourless and odourless. Carbon Monoxide is poisonous andcan cause unconsciousness and death by asphyxiation.

o Exhaust System Maintenance.Ensure that the exhaust system is maintained in good condition and is free from excessive corrosion anddamage which may result in leakage. If the vehicle is driven over an object which strikes the exhaust system, ensure that the exhaust system is inspected at the first available opportunity to ensure that no leakage exists.

o Confined Areas.Do not run the engine in confined spaces, allowing the engine to idle in a garage, even when the doors are openis dangerous practice. Only start the engine immediately prior to moving the vehicle out of the garage.

o Prolonged Idling. If it is necessary to allow the vehicle to idle for prolonged periods, ensure that the heating system air intakecontrol is set to the "Fresh" position, the blower is set to high speed operation and that the vehicle is standingin an open area.

o Load Carrying. If it is necessary to carry long objects which do not permit the hatchback door to be fully closed, the side windowsmust remain closed and the heating air intake control set to the "Fresh" position with the blower running at thehighest speed setting.

To ensure correct operation of the heater system, the air intake grilles at the base of the windscreen must notbe obstructed by snow leaves etc..

STARTING AND STOPPING THEENGINE FOR TURBOCHARGER INTERCOOLER(Diesel Engine)

(1) Do not race or suddenly acceleratethe engine immediately after start-ing it. If the engine is cold, allow theengine to idle for several secondsbefore it is driven to ensure suffi-cient lubrication of the turbo chargerunit.

(2) After high speed driving or prolongedengine loading, the engine shouldbe allowed to idle, as shown in thefollowing chart, before turning it off. This idle time will allow the turbocharger to cool prior to shutting theengine off.

WARNING:Do not turn the engine off immedi-ately after it has been subjected to aheavy load. Doing so may causesevere damage to the engine or turbocharger unit.

FUEL ECONOMY

The following suggestions are made toassist in achieving the greatest degreeof fuel economy.

o Maintaining a constant check onfuel consumption will enable themost economical use pattern anddriving style to be adopted.

o Avoid using the vehicle for veryshort journeys if possible, particu-larly when a cold start is involved.

o Ensure that tyre pressures are main-tained at the correct level.

o Use only the recommended gradeof fuel.

o Avoid carrying unnecessary weight, and if a roof rack is in use, removeit as soon as possible after use.

o Anticipate the road and conditionsahead to enable adjustments inspeed to be made smoothly. Avoidheavy acceleration and sharp brak-ing.

o Avoid cruising at unnecessary highspeeds.

Page 8: Hyundai Terracan - Owner's Manual UK (3/11)

2 DRIVING YOUR HYUNDAI

8

!o Always ensure that the periodic main-

tenance services are performed by aHyundai dealer at the time and/ormileage intervals specified.

o Use the air conditioner only whennecessary.

The five speed fully synchronized trans-mission is controlled by a floor mountedshift lever upon which the shift patternis indicated. It is important that whenchanging gear, the clutch pedal is fullydepressed to avoid transmission dam-age.

CAUTION:o Do not attempt to engage reverse

gear when the car is in motion.o To avoid damaging the selector

mechanism, do not use the gearshift lever as a hand rest. Releasethe lever immediately the shift iscompleted.

o To avoid premature clutch wear,do not use the clutch pedal as afoot rest, and do not hold thevehicle on a gradient using theclutch.

o Ensure that the engine is not over-revved by upshifting before thetachometer needle enters the redzone.

o Do not coast with the shift lever atthe neutral position.

o When descending long gradients, make use of the engine braking toassist the footbrake to avoid brakefade or over-heating.

o When slippery conditions are en-countered, increased cautionshould be exercised when gearchanging, braking or accelerat-ing. Abrupt changes in speed maycause a loss of traction or controlof the vehicle.

o During cold weather, shifting maybe difficult until the transmis-sion lubricant has warmed up.This is normal and not harmful tothe transmission.

o If you've come to a complete stopand it's hard to shift into 1st orR(Reverse), put the shift lever inN(Neutral) position and releasethe clutch. Press the clutch pedalback down, and then shift into1st or R(Reverse) gear position.

o Do not use the shift lever as ahandrest during driving, as thiscan result in premature wear ofthe transmission shift forks.

C070B01A-EAT

Using the Clutch

The clutch should be pressed all theway to the floor before shifting, thenreleased slowly. The clutch pedalshould aways be used after fully re-turning to the original position. Do notrest your foot on the clutch pedal whilstdriving. This can cause unnecessarywear.Do not partially engage the clutch tohold the car on an incline. This causesunnecessary wear. Use the parkingbrake to hold the car on an incline. Donot operate the clutch pedal rapidlyand repeatedly.

! WARNING:o Avoid high cornering speeds.o Do not make quick steering wheel

movements, such as sharp lanechanges or fast, sharp turns.

o Always wear your seat belts. In a collision crash, an unbeltedperson is significantly more likelyto die than a person wearing aseatbelt.

o The risk of rollover is greatly in-creased if you lose control of yourvehicle at highway speeds.

o Loss of control often occurs if twoor more wheels drop off the road-way and the driver oversteers toreenter the roadway.

o In the event your vehicle leavesthe roadway, do not steer sharply.Instead, slow down before pullingback into the travel lanes.

o Never exceed posted speed limits.

General Operating Instructions

o The button in the selector handlemust be depressed before the se-lector can be moved.

o The engine may only be startedwhen the selector is at position "P"or "N".

o Ensure that the footbrake is firmlyapplied when shifting from "P" or"N" to "D", "2" or "L" and vice versa.

o Always engage the parking brakewhen the vehicle is unattended, never use the "P" position in place ofthe parking brake.

o Under normal circumstances, theselector should be placed in the "D"position and the transmission al-lowed to select the most ideal ratiofor the circumstances. In this posi-tion maximum fuel economy will beachieved.

o When descending steep gradientswhere engine braking is required, the selector should be placed at the"2" or "L" position depending uponthe vehicle speed.

o When ascending steep gradientsusing large throttle openings, thetransmission may repeatedly changebetween two adjacent ratios. This isa normal characteristic and may beprevented by cancelling the over-drive facility if the shifting occursbetween third and fourth ratios, se-lecting position "2" if the shiftingoccurs between third and secondratios or selecting position "1" if theshifting occurs between first andsecond ratios.

o Never move the selector to or fromthe "P" or "N" position with the accel-erator depressed.

o Ensure that the overdrive switch is atthe "ON" position for maximumeconomy.

o If rapid acceleration is required, fullydepress the accelerator pedal. Inthis condition, the kickdown mecha-nism will be operated and the trans-mission will automatically downshiftaccording to the vehicle speed.

o The automatic transaxle may be usedto great effect if the vehicle becomesstuck in snow or mud by allowing thevehicle to be rocked to and fro. Theengine speed should be held at ap-

proximately 1,000rpm by means ofthe accelerator pedal and the selec-tor lever moved between the "D" and"R" positions to induce a rockingmotion.

o Do not depress the accelerator pedalwith the brakes applied and the se-lector at the "R", "D", "2" or "L"position.

o Turn the overdrive switch on for goodfuel economy and smooth driving. But if engine braking is needed in the"D" range or if repeated upshiftingand downshifting between the 3rdand 4th gear is needed when climb-ing a gentle slope, it is recommendedthat the overdrive switch be turnedoff. Turn the overdrive switch backon immediately afterward.

!WARNING:

o Avoid high cornering speeds.o Do not make quick steering wheel

movements, such as sharp lanechanges or fast, sharp turns.

o Always wear your seat belts. In a collision crash, an unbeltedperson is significantly more likelyto die than a person wearing aseatbelt.

Driving Four-wheel drive safely

o The driving posture should be moreupright; adjust the seat to a goodposition for easy steering and pedaloperation.

o Be sure to wear the seat belt.o Drive carefully when off the road and

avoid dangerous areas.o 4WD has higher ground clearance

and a narrower track to make themcapable of performing in a wide vari-ety of off road applications. Specificdesign characteristics give them ahigher centre of gravity than ordinarycars. An advantage of the higherground clearance is a better view ofthe road allowing you to anticipateproblems. They are not designed forcornering at the same speeds asconventional 2-wheel drive vehiclesany more than low-slung sports carsare designed to perform satisfacto-rily under off-road conditions. If at allpossible, avoid sharp turns or abruptmaneuvers. As with other vehiclesof this type, failure to operate thisvehicle correctly may result in lossof control or vehicle rollover.

o Do not grip the inside or spokes ofthe steering wheel when driving off-road. The steering wheel could jerkand injure your hands. Always firmlyhold the outer steering wheel whenyou are driving off-road.

o Drive at lower speeds in strong cross-winds. Because of your vehicle’shigh centre of gravity, its stabilitywill be affected in crosswinds. Slowerspeeds ensure better vehicle con-trol.

o Check your brake condition onceyou are out of mud or water. Pressthe brake several times as you moveslowly until your feel normal brakingforces return.

o Four-wheel driving on flat and normalroads can result in a severe bindingcondition when turning the steeringwheel.

3. Turn the transfer shift knob to"AUTO" mode.

Driving 4WD Safely

(1) Be sure to wear the seat belt.(2) Drive at lower speeds in strong

crosswinds. Because of yourvehicle's high centre of gravity, itsstability will be affected in cross-winds. Slower speeds ensure bet-ter vehicle control.

(3) Check the brake condition afterdriving in wet or muddy conditions.Press the brake several times asyou move slowly until you feel nor-mal braking forces return.

(4) Do not drive the vehicle throughwater. (i.e. streams, rivers, lakes, etc.)

(5) The stopping distance of the full-time 4WD vehicle differs very littlefrom that of the 2WD vehicle. When driving on a snow-coveredroad or a slippery, muddy surface, make sure that you keep a suffi-cient distance between your ve-hicle and the one ahead of you.

AUTO ModeFull power delivered to front and rearaxles for increase traction. Use thismode for normal on-road operatingconditions such as dry road surfaces, wet pavement, snow-covered roadsand/or off-road.

LOW ModeFull power to both axles, including alower gear ratio for low-speed applica-tions that require extra power such asdry road surfaces, wet pavement,snow-covered roads and/or off-road.Especially when increased drive poweris required."LOW" mode is not recommended ondry pavement. The 4WD LOW indicator light ( )will be turned on to remind you that youare in the LOW mode.

(6) Since the driving torque is alwaysapplied to the 4 wheels, the perfor-mance of the full-time 4WD vehicleis greatly affected by the conditionof the tyres. Be sure to equip it withall four tyres of the same size andtype.o When replacement of any of the

tyres or disc wheels is neces-sary, replace all of them.

o Rotate the tyres and check thetyre pressure at regular inter-vals.

WARNING:Your vehicle is equipped with tyresdesigned to provide for safe ride andhandling capability.Do not use a size and type of tyre andwheel that is different from the onethat was originally installed on yourvehicle. It can affect the safety andperformance of your vehicle, whichcould lead to handling failure orrollover and serious injury. When replacing the tyres, be sure toequip all four tyres with the tyre andwheel of the same size, type, tread,

brand and load-carrying capacity. Ifyou nevertheless decide to equipyour vehicle with any tyre/wheel com-bination not recommended byHyundai for off-road driving, youshould not use these tyres for high-way driving.

(7) The full-time 4WD vehicle cannotbe towed by an ordinary tow truck.Make sure that the vehicle is towedwith its four wheels raised off theground.o If the vehicle is towed with its

only two wheels raised off theground, the 4WD system couldbe damaged.

o In unavoidable case, if the ve-hicle is being towed with all fourwheels on the ground, it shouldbe towed only forward directionwith rope.

o Whilst towing, check the follow-ing items.1. The ignition switch is in "ACC"

or "ON".2. Place the shift lever in neutral

(For Automatic Transmission,"N" position).

3. Release the parking brake.

NOTE:To avoid serious damage to your4WD vehicle, limit towing to 10 mph(15km/h) and not for more than 1mile (1.5km) at ANY TIME.

(8) For speedometer test or inspection/maintenance (I/M) program of full-time 4WD vehicle, use a four-wheelchassis dynamometer.

CAUTION:Never engage the parking brakewhilst performing these tests.

Water entering the engine air intake willcause severe engine damage.Water can wash the grease from wheelbearings, causing rusting and prema-ture failure, and may also enter theaxles, transmission and transfer case, reducing the gear oil's lubricating quali-ties.

CAUTION:o Whilst the full-time 4WD vehicle is

being raised on a jack, never startthe engine or cause the tyres torotate. There is the danger that rotatingtyres touching the ground couldcause the vehicle to go off the jackand to jump forward.

o If one of the front or rear wheelsbegins to spin in mud, snow, etc.,the vehicle can sometimes bedriven out by depressing the ac-celerator pedal further; however, avoid running the engine continu-ously at high rpm because doingso could damage the 4WD system.

! WARNING:o Avoid high cornering speeds.o Do not make quick steering wheel

movements, such as sharp lanecharges or fast, sharp turns.

o The risk of rollover is greatly in-creased if you lose control of yourvehicle at highway speeds.

o In a collision crash, an unbeltedperson is significantly more likelyto die than a person wearing aseatbelt.

o Loss of control often occurs if twoor more wheels drop off the road-way and the driver oversteers toreenter the roadway.

o In the event your vehicle leavesthe roadway, do not steer sharply.Instead, slow down before pullingback into the travel lanes.

ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM(ABS)

C120A02A-EAT

(Not all models)

The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) isdesigned to prevent wheel lock-upduring sudden braking or on hazard-ous road surfaces. The ABS controlmodule monitors the wheel speed andcontrols the pressure applied to eachbrake. Thus, in emergency situationsor on slick roads, ABS will increasevehicle control during braking.

NOTE:During ABS operation, a slight pul-sation may be felt in the brake pedalwhen the brakes are applied. Also,a noise may be heard in the enginecompartment whilst braking. Theseconditions are normal and indicatethat the anti-lock brake system isfunctioning properly.

WARNING:ABS will not prevent accidents dueto improper or dangerous drivingmanoeuvres. Even though vehiclecontrol is improved during emer-

22 EFFECTIVE BRAKING

HPC140A1-E

Braking system performance and fric-tion material life are greatly affected bythe driving style adopted. The follow-ing suggestions are made to assist inachieving the best results from thebraking system.

o Anticipate the road and conditionsahead in order that heavy brakingmay be avoided.

o When descending long gradients, use the engine to assist in retardingthe vehicle to minimize the possibil-ity of brake fade occurring.

o When trailer towing, ensure that thetrailer brakes function correctly anduse engine braking to assist thevehicle braking system.

o Use only genuine Hyundai replace-ment brake pads and shoes to en-sure consistent friction characteris-tics and wear rates.

o After driving through deep water (e.g.fording), the brakes may becomewet and performance reduced. Al-ways check brake efficiency afteremerging from the water and dry thebrakes by lightly depressing the

LIMITED-SLIP DIFFEREN-TIAL

D190A01HP-EAT

(Not all models)

A limited-slip differential, if equipped,is for the rear wheel differential only. The features of this limited-slip differ-ential are described below:Just as with a conventional differential, the wheel on one side is allowed to turnat a different speed from the wheel onthe other side when the vehicle iscornering. The difference between thelimited-slip differential and a conven-tional differential is that if the wheel onone side of the vehicle loses traction, agreater amount of torque is applied tothe rear wheel on the other side toimprove traction.

gency braking, always maintain asafe distance between you and ob-jects ahead. Vehicle speeds shouldalways be reduced during extremeroad conditions. The braking distance for carsequipped with an anti-lock brakingsystem may be longer than for thosewithout it in the following road con-ditions.

o Driving on rough, gravel or snow-covered roads.

o Driving with tire chains installed.o Driving on roads where the road

surface is pitted or has differentsurface height.

These roads should be driven atreduced speeds. The safety featuresof an ABS equipped vehicle shouldnot be tested by high speed drivingor cornering. This could endangerthe safety of yourself or others.

! CAUTION:o Never start the engine with the

gearshift lever placed in the for-ward or reverse whilst one of therear wheels is jacked up and theother in contact with the ground;doing so may cause the vehicle tojump forward.

o Use only recommended oil forLSD in the rear axle.See page 9-5 for the recommendedoil descriptions.

brake pedal several times whilst driv-ing slowly.

o Apply the parking brake only whenthe vehicle is at rest.

o Since the power assistance pro-vided by the brake servo is derivedfrom the engine, coasting with theengine turned off or towing of thevehicle with the engine turned offwill result in greatly increased pedalpressures being required to stop thevehicle.

o Do not hold the vehicle on the up-grade with the accelerator pedal. This can cause the transmission tooverheat. Always use the brakepedal or parking brake.

DRIVING FOR ECONOMY

C140A01A-EAT

You can save fuel and get more milesfrom your car if you follow these sug-gestions:

o Drive smoothly. Accelerate at amoderate rate. Don't make "jack-rabbit" starts or full-throttle shiftsand maintain a steady cruisingspeed. Don't race between stop-lights. Try to adjust your speed tothat of the other traffic so you don'thave to change speeds unneces-sarily. Avoid heavy traffic wheneverpossible. Always maintain a safedistance from other vehicles so youcan avoid unnecessary braking. Thisalso reduces brake wear.

o Drive at a moderate speed. Thefaster you drive, the more fuel yourcar uses. Driving at a moderatespeed, especially on the highway, isone of the most effective ways toreduce fuel consumption.

o Don't "ride" the brake or clutch pedal. This can increase fuel consumptionand also increase wear on thesecomponents. In addition, driving withyour foot resting on the brake pedalmay cause the brakes to overheat,

which reduces their effectivenessand may lead to more serious conse-quences.

o Take care of your tyres. Keep theminflated to the recommended pres-sure. Incorrect inflation, either toomuch or too little, results in unnec-essary tyre wear. Check the tyrepressures at least once a month.

o Be sure that the wheels are alignedcorrectly. Improper alignment canresult from hitting curbs or drivingtoo fast over irregular surfaces. Pooralignment causes faster tyre wearand may also result in other prob-lems as well as greater fuel con-sumption.

o Keep your car in good condition. Forbetter fuel economy and reducedmaintenance costs, maintain yourcar in accordance with the mainte-nance schedule in Section 5. If youdrive your car in severe conditions, more frequent maintenance is re-quired (see Section 5 for details).

o Keep your car clean. For maximumservice, your Hyundai should bekept clean and free of corrosivematerials. It is especially importantthat mud, dirt, ice, etc. not be al-

Electrical System

Winter conditions impose severe de-mands upon vehicle electrical systems, particularly the charging circuit. Thebattery condition and performancealong with the alternator performanceand drive belt condition should bechecked prior to the onset of winter.

WINTER DRIVING

DC170A1-E

The onset of winter conditions subjectmotor vehicles to greater operatingdemands. Therefore, the followingsuggestions will assist in maintainingpeak performance and reliability dur-ing these periods:

lowed to accumulate on the under-side of the car. This extra weight canresult in increased fuel consumptionand also contribute to corrosion.

o Travel lightly. Don't carry unneces-sary weight in your car. Weight re-duces fuel economy.

o Don't let the engine idle longer thannecessary. If you are waiting (andnot in traffic), turn off your engineand restart only when you're readyto go.

o Remember, your Hyundai does notrequire extended warm-up. As soonas the engine is running smoothly, you can drive away. In very coldweather, however, give your enginea slightly longer warm-up period.

o Don't "labour" or "over-rev" the en-gine. Labouring is driving too slowlyin too high a gear resulting in thevehicle kangarooing. If this happens, shift to a lower gear. Over-revving isracing the engine beyond its safelimit. This can be avoided by shiftingat the recommended speeds.

o Use your air conditioning sparingly. The air conditioning system is oper-ated by engine power so your fueleconomy is reduced when you useit.

SMOOTH CORNERING

C150A01A-EAT

Avoid braking or gear changing in cor-ners, especially when roads are wet.Ideally, corners should always be takenunder gentle acceleration. If you followthese suggestions, tyre wear will beheld to a minimum.

Anti-freeze/Corrosion inhibitor

The cooling system must always con-tain an Ethylene-Glycol based anti-freeze solution. The system is filledduring manufacture with solution ofthe correct strength which should bechecked before the onset of winter andadjusted or changed as required.

NOTE:The anti-freeze solution contains acorrosion inhibitor to prevent deg-radation of the aluminium castingscontained within the engine. There-fore, never, drain the system andrefill with water only.

In addition, anti-freeze solution mustALWAYS be used in vehicles fittedwith air conditioning, to prevent theheater matrix from freezing and sub-sequently bursting with the refrigera-tion system in use.

ZC170D1-E

Door Locks

Should the door lock mechanism be-come frozen, a proprietary lock de-icershould be used. Alternatively, warm-ing the door key may thaw the doorlock. However, the key should behandled carefully to avoid burning thefingers.Never attempt to thaw a frozen doorlock using hot water, since the waterwill eventually freeze and compoundthe problem.

NOTE:The proper temperature for usingthe immobilizer key is from -40°F to176°F (-40°C to 80°C). If you heat theimmobilizer key over 176°F (80°C) toopen the frozen lock, it may causedamage to the transponder in itshead.

ZC170E1-E

Windscreen Washers & Wipers

The windscreen washer bottle shouldbe filled with a solution of water and aproprietary winter screen wash addi-tive. The windscreen wipers shouldnot be used if the blades are frozen tothe windscreen or if they are coveredwith snow, before this is removed.

NOTE:Never allow undiluted screenwasher fluid additive to spill uponthe paintwork or use engine cool-ant anti-freeze since damage to thepaintwork may result.

o When driving in extreme condi-tions, the windscreen wiperblades may fail to clear the screenproperly due to the formation ofice upon the blade edge. It willtherefore be necessary to peri-odically remove such ice to re-store their efficiency.

o If the power operated door mir-rors become frozen, attempts toadjust these may damage themechanism.

Trailer Towbars

Select the correct towbar and ball com-bination, making sure that its locationis compatible with that of the trailer orvehicle being towed.Use a quality non-equalizing towbarwhich distributes the nose weight uni-formly throughout the chassis.

The towbar should be bolted securelyto the car and installed by a qualifiedtechnician.!

o The formation of snow or ice buildup inside the wheel arches mayinterfere with the roadwheels orsteering mechanism. In such in-stances, unusual noises or an in-crease in steering effort may re-sult. Therefore, ensure that thewheelarches are checked peri-odically and any accumulatedsnow or ice removed.

o It is advisable to carry emergencyequipment including, torch, shovel, tow rope, blankets etc., ifa journey is to be undertakeninto areas of severe road condi-tions.

CAUTION:Do not do any towing with your carduring its first 1,000 miles in order toallow the engine to have properlyrun-in. Failure to heed this cautionmay result in serious engine or trans-mission damage.

TRAILER OR VEHICLETOWING

HPC200A2-E

If you are considering towing with yourcar, you should first check with yourLocal Laws to determine their legalrequirements.Since laws vary from county to county, the requirements for towing trailers, cars, or other types of vehicles orapparatus may differ. Ask your Hyundaidealer for further details before towing.

Trailer Brakes

If your trailer is equipped with a brakingsystem, make sure it conforms to fed-eral and/or local regulations and that itis properly installed and operating cor-rectly.

NOTE:If you tow a trailer or vehicle, yourcar will require more frequent main-tenance due to the additional load.See Maintenance Under SevereUsage Conditions" on page 5-6.

CAUTION:o Never connect a trailer brake sys-

tem directly to the vehicle brakesystem.

o When towing a trailer on steepgrades (in excess of 12%) payclose attention to the engine cool-ant temperature gauge to ensurethe engine does not overheat. Ifthe needle of the coolant tem-perature gauge moves across thedial towards "H" (HOT), pull overand stop as soon as it is safe todo so, and allow the engine toidle until it cools down. You mayproceed once the engine hascooled sufficiently.

YC200D2-E

Safety Cables

Should the towbar connection betweenyour car and the trailer or vehicle youare towing fail, the trailer or vehiclecould wander dangerously across otherlanes of traffic and ultimately leave theroadway. To eliminate this potentiallydangerous situation, safety cables, attached between your car and thetrailer or towed vehicle, are required.

15.If you have to stop whilst goinguphill, do not hold the vehicle inplace by pressing on the accelera-tor. This can cause the automatictransmission to overheat. Use theparking brake or footbrake.

NOTE:When towing, check transmissionfluid more frequently.

HPC200E1-E

Trailer or Vehicle Towing Tips

1. Before towing, check towbar andsafety cable connections as well asproper operation of the trailer run-ning lights, brake lights, and turnsignals.

2. Always drive your vehicle at a mod-erate speed (Less than 60 MPH).

3. Trailer towing requires more fuelthan normal conditions.

4. To maintain engine braking effi-ciency and electrical charging per-formance, do not use fifth gear(manual transmission).

5. Always secure items in the trailer toprevent load shift whilst driving.

6. Check the condition and air pres-sure of all tyres on the trailer andyour car. Low tyre pressure canseriously affect the handling. Alsocheck the spare tyre.

7. The vehicle/trailer combination ismore affected by crosswind andbuffeting. When being passed by a large ve-hicle, keep a constant speed andsteer straight ahead. If there is toomuch wind buffeting slow down toget out of the other vehicle's airturbulence.

8. When parking your car and trailer, especially on a hill, be sure to followall the normal precautions. Turnyour front wheel into the curb, setthe parking brake firmly, and putthe transmission in 1st or Reverse(manual) or Park (automatic). Inaddition, place wheel chocks at eachof the trailer's tyres.

9. If the trailer has electric brakes, start your vehicle and trailer mov-ing, and then apply the trailer brakecontroller by hand to be sure thebrakes are working. This lets youcheck your electrical connection atthe same time.

10.During your trip, check occasion-ally to be sure that the load issecure, and that the lights and anytrailer brakes are still working.

11.Avoid jerky starts, sudden accel-eration or sudden stops.

12.Avoid sharp turns and rapid lanechanges.

13.Avoid holding the brake pedal downtoo long or too frequently. This couldcause the brakes to overheat, re-sulting in reduced braking efficiency.
