Although a combination retractor is alsoinstalled in the front passenger seat position,Hyundai strongly recommends that children al-ways be seated in the rear seat. NEVER placeany infant restraint system in the front seat ofthe vehicle. This type of seat belt combines the features ofboth an emergency locking retractor seat beltand an automatic locking retractor seat belt. Tofasten your seat belt, pull it out of the retractorand insert the metal tab into the buckle. Therewill be an audible "click" when the tab locks into

the buckle. When not securing a child restraint, the seat belt operates in the same way as thedriver's seat belt (Emergency Locking Retrac-tor Type). It automatically adjusts to the properlength only after the lap belt portion of the seatbelt is adjusted manually so that it fits snuglyaround your hips. When the seat belt is fullyextended from the retractor to allow the instal-lation of a child restraint system, the seat beltoperation changes to allow the belt to retract, but not to extend. (Automatic Locking RetractorType). See page 1-19.NOTE:Although the combination retractor providesthe same level of protection for seated pas-sengers in either emergency or automaticlocking modes, it is recommended that seat-ed passengers use the emergency lockingfeature for improved convenience. The au-tomatic locking function is intended to facil-itate child restraint installation. To convertfrom the automatic locking feature to theemergency locking operation mode, allowthe unbuckled seat belt to fully retract.

WARNING:o For maximum restraint system protec-

o Front airbags are not intended to deployin side-impact, rear-impact or rollovercrashes. In addition, airbags will not de-ploy in frontal crashes below the deploy-ment threshold speed.

o The driver should sit back as far as pos-sible while still maintaining control of thevehicle. If you are sitting too close to theairbag, it can cause death or seriousinjury when it inflates.

o No objects should be placed over or nearthe airbag modules on the steering wheel, instrument panel, and the front passen-ger's panel above the glove box,

the systems presence are the letters "SRSAIRBAG" embossed on the airbag pad cover inthe steering wheel and the passengers sidefront panel pad above the glove box.

The Hyundai SRS consists of airbags installedunder the pad covers in the center of thesteering wheel and the passengers side frontpanel above the glove box. The purpose of theSRS is to provide the vehicles driver and thefront passenger with additional protection whenused together with the seat belt, in case of afrontal impact.

NOTE:Be sure to read information about the SRSon the labels provided on the backside ofthe sun visor and in the glove box.

WARNING:o As its name implies, the SRS is designed

to work with, and be supplemental to, thedrivers and the passengers three pointseat belt systems and is not a substitutefor them. Therefore your seat belts mustbe worn at all times while the vehicle is inmotion. In addition, the airbags deployonly in certain frontal impact conditionssevere enough to likely cause significantinjury to the vehicle occupants.

o The SRS is designed to deploy the airbagsonly when an impact is sufficiently se-vere and when the impact angle is lessthan 30 from the forward longitudinal

axis of the vehicle. Additionally, theairbags will only deploy once. Thus, seatbelts must be worn at all times.

o If the airbags deploy, they must be re-placed by an authorized Hyundai dealer.

o Do not tamper with or disconnect SRSwiring, or other components of the SRSsystem. Doing so could result in injury, due to accidental firing of the airbags orby rendering the SRS inoperative.

o Do not install a child restraint system inthe front passenger seat position. Achild restraint system must never beplaced in the front seat. The infant orchild could be severely injured or killedby an airbag deployment in case of anaccident.Do not allow children to ride in the frontpassenger seat. If older children (teenag-ers and older) must ride in the front seat, make sure they are always properly beltedand that the seat is moved back as far aspossible.

o For maximum safety protection in alltypes of crashes, all occupants includingthe driver should always wear their seatbelts whether or not an airbag is alsoprovided at their seating position to min-imize the risk of severe injury or death inthe event of a crash. Do not sit or leanunnecessarily close to the airbag whilethe vehicle is in motion.

    SRS Components and Functions

The SRS consists of the following components:

    - Drivers Airbag Module- Passengers Airbag Module- Knee Bolster- SRS Service Reminder Indicator (SRI)- SRS Control Module (SRSCM)

The SRSCM continually monitors all elementswhile the ignition is ON to determine if a frontalor near-frontal impact is severe enough to re-quire airbag deployment.

The SRS service reminder indicator (SRI) onthe instrument panel will blink for about 6 sec-onds after the ignition key is turned to the ONposition or after the engine is started, afterwhich the SRI should go out.

The airbag modules are located both in thecenter of the steering wheel and in the frontpassengers panel above the glove box. When

Upon deployment, tear seams molded directlyinto the pad covers will separate under pres-sure from the expansion of the airbags. Furtheropening of the covers then allows full inflation ofthe airbags.

A fully inflated airbag in combination with aproperly worn seat belt slows the drivers or thepassengers forward motion, thus reducing therisk of head or chest injury. After complete inflation, the airbag immediatelystarts deflating, enabling the driver to maintainforward visibility.

the SRSCM detects a considerable impact tothe front of the vehicle, it will automaticallydeploy the airbags.

CAUTION:When installing a container of liquid airfreshener inside a vehicle, do not place itnear the instrument cluster nor on the in-strument panel pad surface. If there is anyleakage from the air freshener onto theseareas (Instrument cluster, instrument panelpad or air ventilator), it may damage theseparts. If the liquid from the air freshenerdoes leak onto these areas, wash them withwater immediately.

WARNING:o When the SRS is activated, there may be

a loud noise and fine dust will be re-leased throughout the vehicle. These con-ditions are normal and are not hazard-ous. However, the fine dust generatedduring airbag deployment may cause skinirritation. Be sure to wash your handsand face thoroughly with lukewarm wa-

ter and a mild soap after an accident inwhich the airbags were deployed.

o The SRS can function only when theignition key is in the ON position. If theSRS SRI does not come on, or continu-ously remains on, after flashing for about6 seconds when the ignition key is turnedto the ON position, or after the engineis started, or comes on while driving, theSRS is not working properly. If this oc-curs, have your vehicle immediately in-spected by your Hyundai dealer.

o Before you replace a fuse or disconnecta battery terminal, turn the ignition key tothe LOCK position or remove the igni-tion key. Never remove or replace the airbag related fuse(s) when the ignition keyis in the ON position. Failure to heedthis warning will cause the SRS SRI toilluminate.

NOTE:Luggage or other cargo heavier than 33 lbs(15 kg) should not be placed on the passen-ger front seat. This can allow the deploy-ment of the front passenger and/or side airbag in the case of an accident.

WARNING:The Passenger Presence Detection systemis not intended to prevent airbag deploy-ment while a child is in the front passen-ger's seat. It is intended only as a means toreduce unnecessary collision damage re-pair expense by preventing airbag and seatbelt pretensioner deployment when the rightfront passenger seat is unoccupied. Deploy-ment is still possible if only a few poundsare placed upon the seat. Therefore, chil-dren must not be transported in the frontseat. All children must be seated in the rearseat and properly restrained with the vehi-cle's restraint system or a child restraintsystem appropriate for the child's size andweight.
