WELCOME TO THE NEW GENERATION

HyundaiMotorsportkickedoffthe2016FIAWorldRallyChampionship(WRC)byunveilingitsbrandnewcar,theNewGenerationi20WRC,attheteam'sfactoryinAlzenau,Germanyon9December2015.

The presentation venue was particularly poignant and took placein the heart of what will be Hyundai Motorsport’s customer racingheadquartersasthebirthplaceofthecompany’supcomingR5rallycar,whichisalsobasedontheNewGenerationi20.

Theformalrevealofthefive-doorNewGenerationi20WRCmarkstheopening of an exciting new chapter in the short history of Hyundai Motorsport, building on two successful seasons in the competitiveWRC environment. In that time, the team has undertaken a steeplearningcurvetoestablishitselfasagenuinecompetitoragainsttoughopposition.

Followingitsfoundation-layingyearin2013,theteamquicklydevelopedabrandnewWRCcarfromscratchforitsfirstseasonofcompetition.The car proved to beboth quick and reliable, securing amaidenwininGermany.From there, the teamenjoyedamoreconsistent secondseason,scoringfourpodiumfinishesandfightingforsecondplace intheManufacturers'Championshiprightuptotheseasonfinale.

Inearly2015,theteamcommittedtoayear-longtestanddevelopmentprogramme for a WRC specification of the road-going New Generation i20,withitscompetitivedebutsetforRallyeMonte-Carlo2016.TheNewGeneration i20WRC had already accumulated approximately 8,000kmof testingprior to the launch,andhadproven tobequicker than itspredecessor,withtheteam'sdriversalsopraisingimproveddrivability.

ThenewcaristheresultofHyundaiMotorsport'sevolutionsince2013and,althoughtheteamisstillyoung,itisalreadyestablishedintheWRCcommunity.Thisgrowthisalsoreflectedintheteam'sbolderambitionsforthe2016season,namelytofightatthefrontineverystageandtomountaheightenedChampionshipassault.

allconfirmedforafullseasonofWRC.FromMonte-CarloinJanuarytoanew-lookseasonfinale inAustralia,whilealsotaking inabrandnewevent inChina, thetrioofdriverswillsharethe#3,#4and#20carsduring theseason.Theprecisecar-drivercompositionwilldifferfromeventtoevent,offeringtheteamfullflexibilityinitsChampionshipstrategy.TheteamwillbeginitsthirdseasonwithtwoNewGenerationi20 WRCs and one previous model at Rallye Monte-Carlo beforeincreasingtothreeidenticalcarsfromRallySweden.

All threedriverswerepresentatDecember’s launch,which revealeda revised livery for the five-door New Generation i20 WRC as it was shownoffinpublicforthefirsttime.Theteam'stitlepartners,ShellandMobis,bothstandoutonthenewcar,andwillcontinuetobenamedaspartofthetwoteamentries–HyundaiShellWorldRallyTeamandHyundaiMobisWorldRallyTeam–withtheliveryofthelatterduetoberevealedinearly2016.

The team has also retained the services of rising Dutch star KevinAbbring,whowillremainasHyundaiMotorsportTestDriver.AbbringwillcontestselectedWRCroundsinafourthcaraspartofhisagreement,buthisprimaryfocuswillbeonmanagingdevelopmentoftheteam's2017WRCcarandR5activities.

The R5 project, falling under the banner of Hyundai Motorsport'scustomer racing division, is also due for roll-out. There will be adevelopmentphaseduringthefirsthalfof2016,homologationofthecar inmid-2016,andanopeningtoorders inthesecondpartoftheyear.

A TESTED DEVELOPMENT

HyundaiMotorsporthadcompletedaround8,000kmoftestingwiththeNewGenerationi20WRCaheadofthecar’sunveilinginDecember.

Following the car’s roll-out in autumn 2014, theNewGeneration i20WRC underwent a rigorous test and development programme during the courseof2015.

InordertobestreflectthevarietyofterrainencounteredbyWRCcarsincompetition,theteamensuredtheNewGenerationi20WRCwasputthroughitspacesonbothgravelandtarmacinfourseparatecountries.

The team ramped up the development programme from basic testsheld early in the year to component evaluation, settings and latterlyperformance runs. All of this was run concurrently with HyundaiMotorsport’ssuccessful2015WRCcampaign–nomeanfeatforastill-youngteam.

TherevealoftheNewGenerationi20WRCwasn’ttheendofitspre-seasonprogramme,however,withFIAhomologationandsnowtestinginSwedenallontheagendabeforethecarcompetesinitsmaidenrallyinMonte-CarloinJanuary.

2015wasayearofconsolidationforHyundaiMotorsportwiththeteamstrivingformoreconsistency,increasedperformancelevelsandaboldchallengeforsecondplaceintheChampionship. Top-threestagetimesintheseason-openingMonte-Carloeventweresignsofapositiveseasontocome.NeuvilletookhisfirstpodiumoftheseasoninSweden,whilealsowinningthelegendaryColin’sCrestAwardforthelongestjumpontheVargåsenstage.Theteam’stestdriverKevinAbbringmadeanappearancewithSordooutinjured.

Aseriesof16top-threestagetimeswereclaimedbytheteambetweenMexico and Argentina. One year on from his debut, Paddon claimedsecondplaceandacareer-firstWRCpodiuminSardinia,havingledformuchoftherally.Neuvillebackedhimup, takingthirdforhissecondpodiumof2015.

Rally Finland was the fastest rally ever recorded, to which HyundaiMotorsportcontributedwithatriooftop-threestagetimesbySordoandastrongfourthplaceoverallforNeuville. AustraliawasthenhosttofivestagewinssharedbetweenSordoandPaddon,andareturnbyWRCtohistoricCorsicasawafurthercollectionoftop-threetimesforHyundaiMotorsport.Abbring,aspartofafour-rallyprogramme,displayedhispotentialasheheldsecondoverallattheendofthefirstday. SordoarrivedinSpainasthehometownhero,andliveduptoexpectationsclaimingthirdplaceandtheteam’sfourthpodiumoftheyear.HyundaiMotorsportpushedforsecondplace intheChampionshiprighttothefinalrallybutsettledforaclosethird.
