DESCRIPTION

Engineering structure decks are made of carefully formulated concrete but nevertheless require surface waterproofing to protect their reinforcing or prestressing steel from corrosion. Polymer bitumen membranes can be used to ensure durable waterproofing, even when the concrete is cracked. Eurovia’s Hydroplast® sheet is a high-performance solution.

Hydroplast is a prefabricated waterproofing sheet for concrete structures. It is thermally bonded over its entire surface to a substrate where a priming has previously been laid.

Hydroplast is a single-layer waterproofing sheet defined in the French General Technical Specifications, Publication 67 Title 1. It is overlaid directly with one or several asphalt mix layers to support traffic.

Hydroplast is used as adhesive waterproofing on bridge decks and civil engineering structures: bridges, viaducts, overpasses, car parks, shafts, chutes, cut-and-cover trenches, canals, technical ducts, etc. The process can be used to waterproof structures of all dimensions.

Hydroplast sheet is also used in Simplast®, Simplex® and Orthoplast H waterproofing complexes.

> Simplast® is made up of a Hydroplast sheet overlaid with a protective layer of asphaltic concrete in a minimum thickness of 30 mm.

> Simplex® is made up of a Hydroplast sheet covered by a thick 1,800 g/m2 felt. The felt protects against shear failure and ensures drainage at the sheet surface.

> Orthoplast H is a waterproofing process for metal decks. It is made of a Hydroplast sheet and an asphaltic concrete specially formulated with a polymer modified binder.

The Simplast® and Simplex® processes have been approved by the French Railways, Simplast® as waterproofing for road and rail bridges and Simplex® for rail bridges only.

All processes using Hydroplast are laid by experienced Eurovia teams.

Hydroplast is made of a highly modified increased-filler bituminous binder and a non-woven polyester reinforcement. The SBS elastomer modified bitumen provides flexibility, elasticity, adhesion and low thermal sensitivity. The reinforcement provides tensile strength and resistance to shear failure and perforation.

Hydroplast is produced in a factory using an ISO 9001 certified process. The surface of the sheet is protected by light grey aggregates and a meltable plastic film protects its underside. It is supplied in standard 8 metre x 1 metre rolls with a unit weight of 48 kg.

Hydroplast has excellent resistance to substrate cracking. In the Aix en Provence LRPC cracking test at -10°C and 30 mm/hr, no cracking or delamination was observed at 9 mm opening in either the standard test or the fatigue test (200 cycles of 1 mm opening at 20°C and 30 mm/hr).The requirement given by Publication 67 for this test is 2 mm.

The sheet is laid over a substrate that has been cleaned by high-pressure water and/or mechanical means. The substrate macro-texture must have an average texture depth of less than 1.5 mm. If need be, the substrate can be locally or completely reprofiled before the sheet is laid; asphalt mix reprofiling over the sheet is also possible. The equipment used to lay Hydroplast does not require road access.

The concrete is cold primed with a solvented polymer bitumen dressing (250 to 300 g/m2) applied by roller or gun. A precise laying plan is then drawn up and the sheet is unrolled lengthwise along the structure and welded to the dry substrate over its entire surface by melting the bitumen of the underside with a hand-held blowtorch or pipe burner. Laying machinery may also be used.

Adjacent edges and roll ends are lapped by at least 5 cm. Ends are staggered to avoid excessive thickness. Welding is followed by careful taping to ensure that no air remains between the substrate and the sheet.
