• There is no universal solution for electrical storage
• Large scale storage can only be addressed by
pumped hydro, compressed air (CAES) and
chemical storage media like hydrogen and
methane
• The potential to extend pumped hydro capacities
is very limited
• CAES has limitations in operational flexibility and
capacity
Key statements
/ methane
Hydrogen is the only option to implement energy capacities > 10 GWh
Options to address large scale “grid storage” are limited

Siemens PEM water electrolyzer technology
is based on more than 40 years of experience at Siemens
• Siemens started its PEM electrolyzer development
in 1998
• Siemens reference list in electrolyzer technology:
• continuous lab operation > 60.000 h
• 12y field operation (prototype)
• 100 bar prototype
• 45y electrode know-how
• 50+y experience in heavy duty rectifiers
• complete solution in one hand
• heavy duty rectifiers (up to 70.000 A)
• transformers
• control units
• grid connection
• gas turbines

• Siemens has established the business unit “Hydrogen
Solutions” to develop and industrialize PEM electrolyzer
systems.
• Systems in the MW-range will be available starting
2015, demonstrators in the sub-MW-class in 2013.
• Afterward, a 3rd Product line is planned in the range
10 until > 100 MW.
• Siemens supports the roll-out of H2-refuelling
infrastructure as member of the „Clean Energy
Partnership“.
• Siemens will be system provider (electrolyzer systems)
for the future H2-fuel scenario
