Silicosis
• Inhaling dust from frac sand causes permanent lung damage
• Can lead to permanent disability and death
• Always use proper respiratory protection when handling frac sand
• Ensure respirator filter is NIOSH approved N95 or better
• Inspect and fit test respirator prior to use
Hydraulic Fluid
• Leaking fluid can cause fires
• Skin contact can cause chemical burns
• Ingestion is hazardous
• Perform preventative maintenance and check for leaks
• Consider fire protection requirements and ensure escape routes
• Never reach into blind vehicle cavities
• Add gloves to standard PPE
High Pressure and Flow Rate
• High pressures create possibility for explosive bursts
• Burst lines with high flow rates whip violently
• System contains many elements with different pressure ratings
• Check entire system for sufficient burst pressure ratings
• Stake down lines with dedicated anchors
• Monitor and report for leaks
• Apply electronic shut-down during leaks
Noise
• Impairs communication
• High levels cause permanent hearing loss and tinnitus
• Higher levels need more effective protection than just earplugs
• All visitors must have some hearing protection
• Use both earplugs and earmuffs when noise exceeds 105 decibels
• Remove earplug cords so earmuffs seal properly
• Radio enabled headsets allow workers to communicate
• Take any temporary hearing loss seriously to prevent more damage
Thank you for working safe!
• All accidents are preventable only when everyone does their part
• You are responsible for your own safety
• Doing the job right is faster than doing the job over
• Consider RigPass with Safeland orientation for all frac hands
