Telephone Exchange, PathergattiRoad, Hyderabad, Telangana 500082,India

Charminar in Hyderabad is a monumentsynonymous with the city itself, the fourspires rising in the sky seem to proclaim tothe world of the rich heritage of this ancientcity. The breathtaking structure, which is atthe heart of the city will mesmerize youmore as you come closer. The four storiedminars are ornamented with ringformations in the shape of delicate flowerpetals. Since there are no official documentsor inscriptions about Charminar, not muchis known about the date of its foundation orthe reason behind it. However, there are anumber of theories abound.

An excellent example of Islamicarchitecture, the structure is made up ofpulverized marbles, granites, mortar andlimestone. There are 45 praying spaces butthe best one is the rooftop mosque at thewestern end of the structure. As the soundof the city dwindles down, as serenity startssurrounding you, you will feel like heavenitself is blessing you. There are 149 windingsteps that lead up to the rooftop. Take abreak and stand on the balcony of the firstfloor and feast your eyes on the hustle andbustle of the busy Laad Bazaar down below.

The ancient fortcomplex of Golconda will charm you with itshistory, tinged with legends and anecdotes. The construction of this regal structure isbelieved to have started in 1143 as a mudfort, during the rule of the Kakatiya Dynasty.Today, the granite fort stands on a 400 feethill, and seems to emit a kind of ancientaura from each and every part. The fortcomplex is made up of four separate fortssurrounded by an outer wall whose

perimeter is around 10 km. Apart from that, there are semi-circular bastions, some ofthem still sporting cannons on top, drawbridges, eight gateways, stables, mosques and temples. Golconda Fort stillhave the remnants of the palatial rooms andhalls. Standing inside one of these will giveyou an idea of the kind of grandeur thisplace must have had during its golden days.An ingenious example of acousticalengineering can be experienced at the ironspiked Fateh Darwaza, one of the fortentrances, spiked so as to prevent elephantsfrom breaking open the gates. A hard clapmade under the dome can be heard as faras the highest pavillion (Balsa Hill) almost akilometre away. This arrangement workedas a warning to alert the forces in the fort incase of an incoming attack. With so muchground to cover, exploring every nook andcranny might be tedious.
