Welcome
Welcome to the 2016 ASME Internal Combustion Engine Fall Technical Conference in Greenville, S.C., USA. The objective of this conference is to provide a forum for the exchange of information related to the science and application of internal combustion engines for members of the industry, academia, and governments from all over the world. The conference program is distributed into five concurrent sessions, spread over two days covering a wide range of topics including, advanced combustion, fuel technologies, emissions control systems, numerical simulation, and engine design for all applications of internal combustion engines. In addition to high quality technical presentations in these areas, the conference features a plenary keynote talk on Monday, October 10 and an invited talk by an industrial expert on Tuesday, October 11.
The plenary keynote address will be by Professor Zoran Filipi, Timken Endowed Chair in Vehicle System Design, and Chair of the Automotive Engineering Department at Clemson University. He also serves as the Executive Director of the Campbell Graduate Engineering Center, the academic anchor of the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR) in Greenville, SC. His presentation will focus on the interplay between heat transfer and chemical kinetics in Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) combustion. We are also honored to have Mr. Mark Sellnau, Engineering Manager, Advanced Combustion Systems, Delphi Powertrain and Fellow, SAE, deliver our Tuesday morning invited talk. His talk focuses on insights gained from a multi-year program that focused on the development of the 1.8 Liter Gasoline Direct Compression Ignition (GDCI) engine at Delphi.
This is also the sixth year of the undergraduate student presentation competition, which is designed to engage bright minds to help design the next generation of internal combustion engines. The two winners of the competition will receive a cash award of $3000 with subsidized travel and registration to the 2016 ASME ICEF conference, and will present their winning submissions during the Monday luncheon.
We are excited to announce the addition of the First undergraduate research poster and graduate work-in-progress poster sessions to the 2016 technical program. The undergraduate research poster session features subsidized conference registration for undergraduate students whose submissions did not make the winning list. The work-in-progress graduate poster session features on-going graduate thesis and/or doctoral dissertation research by graduate students. These poster sessions a provide an excellent avenue for undergraduate and graduate students to showcase their research to the larger internal combustion engines community and consider future graduate research opportunities and/or careers focused in the development of efficient powertrain technologies.
We are grateful for the participation of the many volunteers whose contributions have made for an exciting and high quality technical program. This meeting would not have been possible without the tireless contributions of our track leaders, session organizers, technical reviewers, and the authors of approximate-ly 100 manuscripts. Abstract: “Interplay Between Heat Transfer and Kinetics-driven Combustion: Lessons Learned and Directions for Future”
Biography: Dr. Zoran Filipi is Professor, Timken Endowed Chair in Vehicle System Design, and Chair of the Automotive Engineering Department at Clemson University. He also serves as the Executive Director of the Campbell Graduate Engineering Center, the academic anchor of the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (ICAR) in Greenville, SC. He was with the University of Michigan between 1994 and 2011, where he rose to the rank of Research Professor and held several leadership positions. His main research interests are advanced IC engine concepts, alternative fuels, hybrid powertrain systems, and energy for transportation. He published over 178 papers in international journals and refereed conference proceedings, and holds three patents. Dr. Filipi is an SAE Fellow, ASME Fellow, former Associate Editor of the ASME Journal of Engineering for Gas Turbines and Power and Editor-in-Chief of the SAE Journal of Alternative Powertrains.
While turbocharging and downsizing dominates the near-term trends, Homogeneous Charge Compression Engine (HCCI) is among the most promising mid-term technologies for achieving the US 2025 CAFE standards and future European vehicle CO2 emission limits. Auto-ignition, combustion, and low-end operating stability in an HCCI engine critically depend on the interplay between the in-cylinder thermal environment and chemical kinetics; therefore, in-depth characterization of this complex interdependence is required to overcome barriers to practical introduction of HCCI. This presentation will synthesize insights gained through multi-year research in this area, and offer a glimpse into the future.
Highlights of the heat transfer research will include characterization of the heat transfer in the HCCI engine using experiments with heat flux probes mounted on both the cylinder head and the piston, development of a heat transfer correlation for the HCCI engine, the effect of the combustion chamber deposits (CCD) on near-wall phenomena and HCCI combustion, including methods for determining thermal properties of CCD, and development of a novel post-processing technique for systematic analysis of in-cylinder thermal stratification.
On-going effort to engineer thermal barrier coatings (TBC) capable of producing most desirable effects on thermal efficiency, combustion efficiency and emissions of UBHC and CO will be included as well.
Fuel effects will be discussed next. In particular, this talk will address the variability in pump gasoline composition as a source of uncertainty, but also an opportunity to enhance the high-efficiency potential of the HCCI technology through matching of fuel properties to engine needs. The final
segment of the presentation will consider fuel economy benefits on the vehicle system level, and a possible synergy between a dual-mode, SI-HCCI engine and powertrain hybridization.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT COMPETITION AWARD PRESENTATION
"Direct Measurements of Ammonia Storage on Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) Systems using Radio Frequency Methods”
Speaker: Jonathan Aguilar, University of Massachu-setts in Lowell
Biography: Jonathan Aguilar is an undergraduate honor's student at the University of Massachusetts in Lowell in conjunction with Northern Essex Community
Colleges. His passion in the Mechanical Engineering field was demonstrat-ed upon completion of the Massachusetts Live Sciences Center’s Internship Challenge at Advanced Research and Development (ARD) in the town of North Andover. Later, Jonathan’s enthusiasm for internal combustion engine related research began at Filter Sensing Technologies (acquired by CTS Corp.) where he worked on multiple projects focused on developing advanced measurement and control technologies. This enabled him to perform independent research and development work at Lantos Technolo-gies and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technologies (MIT).
Abstract: In order to meet the US EPA NOx limit of 0.2 g/bhp-hr for heavy-duty trucks and bus engines, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology became the prevalent strategy to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions. In the SCR process, NOx reacts with ammonia (NH3) formed from urea (diesel exhaust fluid), which is injected into the exhaust gas upstream of the catalyst to convert NOx to N2 and H2O. Maximum NOx conversion efficiency is achieved by optimizing NH3 storage on a catalyst wash-coat, which plays an important role in the overall dominant reaction. However, improvements to NOx and NH3 sensor technology are needed to make such systems possible. As a result, this research study focused on a technique to directly detect and measure NH3 storage in a catalyst by using a radio frequency (RF)-based approach.
Most SCR technology uses a closed-loop system which provides higher NOx conversion efficiency vs. open loop. However, existing NOx sensors are cross-sensitive to ammonia. Thus, at the event of an ammonia slip, the NOx sensor is unable to distinguish between NOx and NH3. Additional ammo-nia sensors only detect slip after the catalyst. By implementing direct NH3 measurements on the catalyst using an RF sensor, ammonia slip may be reduced, potentially eliminating the need for an ammonia slip catalyst (ASC) downstream of the SCR.
Experiments were executed on a laboratory bench reactor using a total gas flow rate of 73 LPM (liter per minute) corresponding to a gas hourly space velocity of 21,000 1/h. All experiments were carried out with 7 vol. % O2 bal-anced with N2. The gas flow for each species of interest was controlled by mass flow controllers (MFCs). The concentration of NH3 upstream and down-

stream of the catalyst was monitored by commercial NOx and NH3 sensors. NH3 storage is temperature dependent, therefore the catalyst was enclosed by multiple heating element controlled by a voltage variable transformers and temperatures were monitored via LabVIEW (data acquisition software).
Radio frequency (RF) signals were applied to directly obtain real time measurements of the SCR NH3 storage state. The metallic catalyst housing served as a partially filled cavity resonator. Thus, electromagnetic waves were excited by a single RF antenna (rod antenna) at the outlet of the cat-alyst. The RF signal was monitored over a wide frequency range (1.0 GHz) through the metallic catalyst housing (reactor cavity). This enables changes in the electrical properties of the zeolite (+cu) catalyst to be measured as a function of stored ammonia. Furthermore, the effect on the RF signal relative to stored ammonia over a range of temperature and exhaust conditions was investigated.
The adsorbed NH3 on the catalyst surface forms NH4+ ions on Bronsted acid sites, which changes the electrical properties of the catalyst. That is, the adsorption of NH3 in the catalyst causes the conductivity of the zeolite (+cu) to increase. The electrical property of the catalyst was monitored by the resonant frequencies determined by local extrema in the frequency spectrum (2.8 – 3.8 GHz) of the resonance signal. By selecting a region of interest within the frequency spectrum, a change in the area is monitored as the ammonia stores in the catalyst.
To validate the microwave-based method, additional experiments were performed at 200, 250, 300 and 350 °C with NH3 feed concentrations of 250 and 500 ppm. At the start of the test, the RF signal remained constant with no ammonia feed (CNH3 = 0 ppm). However, the addition of NH3 caused the RF signal to increase as ammonia was stored. As NH3 feed is increased, NH3 slip occurs and the RF signal saturates. Furthermore, during catalyst regeneration (NH3 desorption) the RF signal decreases back to the initial level (CNH3= 0 ppm). The increased magnitude in the RF signal is a function of stored ammonia on the SCR.
The results of this study were compared to similar investigations by Cav-ataio, et al. and have shown ammonia oxidation as a function of increasing temperature and oxygen levels. The RF response in this study relative to NH3 storage and NH3 oxidation on the SCR is well correlated with experi-mental results reported in the literature. In addition, NH3 storage on the SCR is shown to decrease as a function of increasing temperature. Therefore, a reduction in the catalyst ammonia storage level was measured by the RF system as a function of increasing exhaust temperature. Furthermore, the dielectric properties of the zeolite (+cu) catalyst vary with the SCR ammonia storage state and impact the RF signal resonances. Ammonia desorption from the catalyst was also observed by the RF system during catalyst regen-eration. Overall, the RF signal was well-correlated with ammonia storage in the SCR. Direct measurements from the RF sensor may allow closed-loop urea dosing control technology to provide higher NOx conversion efficiency. However, further investigations are needed to determine the RF behavior in the presence of water (H2O) and nitrogen oxides (NOx).
"Development of a Research Oriented Cylinder Head”
Speaker: Jeff Son, University of British Columbia
Biography: Jeff Son is a recent graduate of Engineer-ing Physics from the University of British Columbia. During his undergraduate studies, he worked at the UBC Clean Energy Research Centre where he
developed a custom research-oriented cylinder head. He was also an active member of UBC Supermileage Team where he designed and fabricated aerodynamic carbon fiber shells to compete at SAE Supermile-age and Shell Eco-Marathon competitions. He will be continuing his studies at UBC for a Master’s in Mechanical Engineering at UBC with a focus in combustion diagnostics.
Abstract: UBC’s Clean Energy Research Centre (CERC) investigates combustion of various fuels (diesel, natural gas, and biofuels) and fueling techniques using conventional and optical engines. The latter allows for high-speed videography of inside the combustion chamber. In order to facilitate their new research on dual fuel, direct injection of diesel and natural gas, CERC required a new, research oriented cylinder head.
The new cylinder head maintained certain features, such as the bolt pattern and the piston placement, to allow mounting to the existing engine block. However, it had to also provide access for three diagnostic probes to the piston bowl. In addition, the a flexible injector mounting system is required to facilitate use of light and heavy duty common rail diesel injectors and direct natural gas injectors, with both internal and external fuel rail. Minimum modifications had to be made to the valvetrain in order to reduce number of custom parts. Also, the injector had to be vertical and centered around the piston bowl. Other requirements included retaining strength and cooling ability while decreasing swirl in the cylinder.
The design of the new cylinder head was based on the existing, produc-tion cylinder head. However, due to the lack of engineering drawings or a 3d model of the existing head, blueprinting and finite element analysis (FEA) were used to develop a benchmark for the new design. The existing head was sliced and laser scanned to create a point cloud and subse-quently a 3D model of the existing head. FEA was performed using Solidworks simulation to apply combustion pressures, clamping forces, and bolt torques. Validation calculations were found to correlate well with simulation results, instilling further confidence in the method of simulation.
The size of the injector quickly became the biggest challenge of the new cylinder head design, and big design changes were made to compensate for the larger injector. The valve sizes were decreased, valve train assembly translated towards the pushrods, intake/exhaust ports were rerouted, an unconventional bridge component were added to raise rocker arms, and other changes were required to allow the injector to align with the centre of the piston bowl without completely blocking bowl access for the diagnostic probes. An injector sleeve was chosen to be used so that different injectors can be mounted to the new cylinder head, eliminating the need of making a new head for every new injector.
The final design was chosen from three different concepts and design iterations were analyzed using FEA and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). CFD allowed for a simulation of coolant flow through the head, and this information was used to ensure uniform and sufficient coolant velocity and heat transfer. In addition, a CFD simulation of airflow into the cylinder

Highlighted Sessions
was performed to evaluate the swirl from the new intake port. Following
the concept model generation, the cylinder head and valvetrain compo-
nents were further refined through additional FEA to reduce stress
concentration and increase overall strength.
Once the concept design was finalized, the design was prepared for
production by working closely with a casting foundry and machine shops.
In this process, manufacturability was improved; valvetrain components
such as valves, guides, springs, and valve seats were specified and
ordered; engineering drawings were prepared and geometric dimension-
ing and tolerancing were applied. After consultation with the casting
foundry during the design phase, ductile iron was chosen as the casting
material for its strength, ease of casting, and reparability. The sand mold
was 3D printed as it was more cost effective for low volume manufacturing
than making a pattern. The cast cylinder head was then machined to and
is machined to the final design. Designing a valve cover for the new
cylinder head was challenging because many large components were
packed in such small space. The solution featured an aluminum base plate
with a complex-shaped 3d printed sidewall.
In conclusion, a custom cylinder head was developed and fabricated to
accommodate a new dual-fuel direct injector. The new cylinder head
features three probe bores for diagnostic tools like pressure transducer
and pyrometer. The new head utilizes an injector sleeve which could be
easily swapped to fit different injectors. Despite its ability to fit large
injector sleeve and diagnostic probes, the new cylinder head is stronger
with reduced intake swirl and the same cooling capability thanks to the
modern manufacturing methods and advanced analytic tools like 3D
printing, CNC machining, FEA and CFD simulations. By allowing for
additional probe accesses and modular injector mounting, this new
cylinder head will open up new possibilities to the combustion researches
at UBC’s Clean Energy Research Centre.

PLENARY PRESENTATION
“Advancement of GDCI Engine Technology for US 2025 CAFE and
Tier3 Emissions”
Speaker: Mark Sellnau, Engineering Manager of
Advanced Combustion Systems, Delphi Powertrain
Mark Sellnau is Engineering Manager of Advanced
Combustion Systems at Delphi Powertrain in Auburn
Hills, Michigan. His responsibilities include develop-
ment of valvetrain, fuel injection, and controls systems for advanced
internal combustion engines, including alternative fuels. Mark is leading
the development of Gasoline Direct Injection Compression Ignition (GDCI)
technology at Delphi.
Prior to joining Delphi in 1999, Mark worked at GM Research Labs for 14
years. He is an SAE Fellow, received the SAE Colwell award in 2001, and
the SAE McFarland award in 2003. He has coauthored over 26 technical
papers and holds 16 US patents. He earned his BSME at the University of
Michigan (Ann Arbor) and MSME at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology. “Advancement of GDCI Engine Technology for US 2025
CAFE and Tier3 Emissions”
The automotive industry is facing tremendous challenges to improve fuel
economy and emissions of the internal combustion engine. In the US,
2025 standards for fuel economy and CO2 emissions are extremely
stringent. Simultaneously, vehicles must comply with new Tier3 emissions
targets. Increasing world demand for diesel, jet fuel, and heavier
distillates means that gasoline-like fuels will have long term cost advan-
tages. In all market segments, there is a need for clean and efficient
engines operating on gasoline-like fuels. A key question is, "what is the
best way to burn gasoline?"
One approach is Gasoline Direct Injection Compression Ignition (GDCI). In
this combustion process, gasoline is injected directly into the cylinder and
partially but not fully premixed prior to the start of heat release. As part of
two US DOE programs, Delphi has developed a 1.8L GDCI engine that
utilizes partially premixed compression ignition "fulltime" without combus-
tion mode switching. Injection parameters are used to control mixture
stratification and combustion phasing using a multiple-late injection
strategy with GDi-like injection pressures. The engine features a shallow
pentroof combustion chamber, 400 bar central-mounted injector, 15:1
compression ratio, and low swirl and squish. There are no spark plugs.
The engine is compatible with less processed, low-octane, gasoline fuels
for significantly lower life cycle CO2 emissions.
Preliminary test results indicated good brake specific fuel consumption
(BSFC), while meeting targets for engine out emissions, combustion noise
and stability. BSFC at the 2000 RPM-2 bar BMEP global test point was
248 g/kWh. At 1500 RPM, low BSFC of 210 to 215 g/kWh was measured
over a wide load range from 6 to 12 bar BMEP. GDCI exhibits very low
indicated specific fuel consumption (ISFC) and good firing FMEP levels.
However, boost parasitics are above target and offer further opportunity
for BSFC improvement.
A simple aftertreatment system without lean NOx reduction was built and
tested. Engine emissions and catalyst performance were characterized
over a range of warm operating conditions. Initial results were encourag-
ing that Tier3-bin 30 targets can be met for HC, CO, and PM. Lean NOx
catalysis will be needed to meet ultra-low Tier3 NOx levels.
The GDCI engine concept is undergoing rapid development with the 3rd
generation GDCI engines being built in fall 2016. Top objectives are
improved fuel spray-piston bowl matching, fast EGR transient response,
fast cold starts, improved robustness, and improved full load output.

ASME INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE AWARDTerrance F. Alger II, Southwest Research Institute
THE INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE AWARD, established in 1966, is given in recognition of eminent achievement or distinguished contribution over a substantial period of time, which may result
from research, innovation or education in advancing the art of engineer-ing in the field of internal combustion engines.
TERRENCE F. ALGER II, Ph.D., director, spark ignited engine research and development department, Engine, Emissions and Vehicle Research Division, Southwest Research Institute, San Antonio, for exceptional technical and business leadership that has led to multiple innovations in internal combustion engine technologies and the transition of these innovations to production engines for significant real-world impact on vehicle fuel economy.
Dr. Alger graduated from the U.S. Military Academy (West Point, N.Y.) as a distinguished cadet with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1992 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. During his five years in the Army, Alger served as a platoon leader and task force engineer for an airborne battalion combat team.
Following his Army service, Alger attended The University of Texas at Austin, where he earned a master’s degree and his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering in 1999 and 2001, respectively. His master’s thesis and doctoral dissertation focused on optical investigations in a gasoline direct injection engine to determine the effect of flow fields and other engine parameters on fuel/air mixing, emissions and performance. Following completion of his Ph.D., Alger worked at Ford Motor Company (Dearborn, Mich.), where he was involved in supporting numerous development projects using optical diagnostics.
Alger joined Southwest Research Institute, San Antonio, in 2003. Since 2014 he has been the director of spark ignited engine research and development in the Engine, Emissions and Vehicle Research Division. His focus is on improving engine efficiency and emissions through in-cylinder combustion processes and advanced engine technologies. He is co-inventor of the dual coil offset (DCO) ignition system and the dedicated exhaust gas recirculation (D-EGR) engine. In addition to developing more efficient gasoline engines, Alger’s current research interests include ignition systems, abnormal combustion in gasoline engines, and boosting systems and fluids (fuels and lubricants) for advanced combustion concepts.
Alger holds 20 patents and has published more than 50 papers on topics covering engine efficiency and emissions.
He is a member of ASME and a Fellow of SAE International.

Scholarly Research Articles of high technical quality related to the development, advancement, and improved understanding of the internal combustion engine are sought for the 2017 Fall Technical Conference of The ASME Internal Combustion Engine Division. The conference will be held October 15-18, 2017 in Seattle, WA. In addition to high quality technical presentations, this conference will include keynote speakers, student presentations, industrial tours, a banquet, many networking opportunities, and an overall collegial atmosphere to advance the state of the art of the internal combustion engine.
All off ers relating to the internal combustion engine, or interfaces with internal combustion engines, are accepted for rigorous review by experts in the fi eld. Accepted papers will be grouped into one of the following technical tracks:
Track 1: Large Bore Engines
Track 2 Fuels
Track 3 Advanced Combustion
Track 4 Emissions Control Systems
Track 5 Instrumentation, Controls, and Hybrids
Track 6 Numerical Simulation
Track 7: Engine Design and Mechanical Development
Accepted papers that are presented at the confer-ence will be archived through the ASME website. Presentation of papers at the conference requires payment of the registration fee (papers not presented at the conference are excluded from the conference proceedings, considered not published, and not archived). Accepted papers must transfer copyright to ASME, with certain exceptions noted in the ASME ICED presentation and copyright policies available below. Please view the ASME ICE Division’s Presentation Policy and ASME copyright policy.
Paper Categories: (1) Scholarly Research Article, (2) Engineering Applications Article
A full-length technical paper may cover either archival research or engineering application. Both types of content are valued and encouraged for ICEF2017. The technical paper is a full-length, peer-reviewed article meant to highlight discovery, substantial advancement, or applica-tion of engineering science relating to internal combustion engines or those components that interface with internal combustion engines. Technical papers with archival research content will undergo reviews based on the article’s probability to make a long-term impact on the technical community. In addition, technical papers with archival research content of the highest quality and with potential for long-lasting technical contribution will be recommended to journal editors for consideration as fast-track publication in either ASME’s Journal of Engineer-ing for Gas Turbines and Power or ASME’s Journal of Engineering Resources Technology. Technical papers with engineering application content will undergo reviews based on technical soundness. Examples of engineering application content include case studies and introduction of new engine technologies. All technical papers require an abstract upon submittal for consideration; if accepted, a full-length draft for peer review; and, if accepted, a fi nal paper is required. The fi nal submitted paper must follow ASME Internal Combustion Engine Division’s paper format, publication policy as defi ned at The Publication Policy Page and copyright transfer policy to be accepted and published in the conference proceedings. Commercialization of any sort is strictly prohibited. The maximum length of the paper shall be no more than 10 pages (fully formatted, two-column, 8.5 x 11 inch).
