What is HVDCtransmission system?
HVDC TransmissionSystem stands forHighVoltageDirectCurrentTransmission
System.HVDC transmissionsystemsare basically
usedtotransmit DC power.
Theyarecapable oftransmitting DC power
athighvoltagesand over longdistances.

LINK
The longest HVDClink in the world is
the Inga-Shaba link.It connects Inga dam
to Shaba copper mine.
It is 1700 km long.
It has a capacity of600MW.

CORONA DISCHARGE IN HVDC
y Corona is the ionization of airsurrounding the conductor by the
presence of a strong electric field.
y Due to this , either the positive ions or
electrons are attracted to the conductor.y This effect causes considerable power
losses.
y Both AC and DC transmission linescan generate corona.
y As corona is initiated, a hissing noise isheard and ozone gas Is formed which can bedetected by its characteristic odour.

FUTURE OF HVDC IN INDIA
HVDC has taken INDIAselectricity industry by storm.
India is one of those few countries
having a large number of HVDCschemes in operation.
The HVDC links which are in
progress include
I. Bishwanath to Agra
II. Madurai,India toAnuradhapura,Sri Lanka
III. Mundra,Gujarat to Haryana.

ADVANTAGES OF HVDC
TRANSMISSION SYSTEMy No limits in transmitted distance.
y Direction of power flow can be changed
quickly.y Lesser corona loss compared to HVAC.
y HVDC transmissions have a highavailability and reliability rate.
y Highly economical since extra
compensating materials are not required.y HVDC can carry more power for given
size of conductor.

DISADVANTAGES OF HVDC
y InHVDC, conversion, switching, control ,availabilityandmaintenancearethemostproblematicareas.
y Expensivestatic invertersarerequired.y Forsmallertransmissiondistances , losses in static inverters may
bebiggerthanACtransmission.
y Circuitbreaking isdifficult.
yVoltagetransformation isdifficult.
