HVAC Student Handbook 2016-2017
Heating and Air Conditioning Technology (HVAC) is a post-secondary instructional program
that prepares individuals to work in engineering departments or private firms installing,
maintaining, and operating small or medium air conditioning, heating, and refrigeration
systems. Instruction prepares individuals to work in a commercial setting performing special
tasks relating to designing duct work, assembly, installation, servicing, operation, and
maintenance of heating and cooling systems according to the standards of the American Society
of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers, Inc., Air Conditioning Contractors of
American (ACCA), and Air Conditioning Refrigeration Institute (ARI). Included are air
conditioning, heating and refrigeration devices; equipment, techniques, and systems; and
maintenance and operation of these systems.
PURPOSE OF HVAC STUDENT HANDBOOK
J. F. Drake State Community and Technical College HVAC Student Handbook is intended to
provide important information related to the HVAC program. The material included in this
document will assist you in your advancement through the program. A copy of this handbook is
available in the Dean’s Office and in the program area.
ACCREDITATION
J. F. Drake State Community and Technical College is accrediated by the Southern Association

HVAC Student Handbook 2016-2017
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION, MISSION, AND OBJECTIVES
The Heating & Air Conditioning program examines the principles of heating and cooling air in
controlled situations. The knowledge and applications of electricity and refrigerants are taught
through problem-solving techniques to enable students to diagnose malfunctions and
service/repair residential, commercial and industrial systems. The Heating & Air Conditioning
curriculum is designed to help students prepare for employment in the field of heating,
ventilation, and air conditioning.
The mission of the program is to provide accessible, quality education opportunities that will
provide individuals with knowledge, technical skills, and attitudes necessary to obtain entry-level
employment in the HVAC profession.
EMPLOYMENT OUTLOOK AND SALARY INFORMATION
Graduates of the Heating & Air Conditioning program may become employed as a Service
Technician, Facility Maintenance Supervisor, Heating & Air Conditioning Lab Technician or
Heating & Air Conditioning business owner. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics
(BLS), the mean annual wage for heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and
installers was $47,380 as of May 2015. HVAC technicians are most commonly employed as
maintenance and repair representatives for companies that manufacture HVAC equipment. Some
are hired to do installation work, but technicians must also typically be able to maintain and
repair systems. The BLS reported that heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration jobs were
predicted to increase 14% from 2014-2024, which was much faster than average. Additional
information is available from the Department of Labor’s Occupational Outlook Handbook.
SKILLS NEEDED
Successful Heating & Air Conditioning Technicians are in good physical condition; are familiar
with reading blueprints; have knowledge of plumbing and electrical work; possess a basic
understanding of microelectronics.
There are currently two levels of training available at J. F. Drake State Community and
Technical College. They are the Associate of Applied Science Degree and the Short Certificate.
