THE CHALLENGE The McKenney’s team had to devise innova- tive strategies to perform the HVAC work without compromising the integrity of the museum’s artwork, artifacts and day-to-day operations. Maintaining temperature and humidity control in the museum was critical along with addressing worker comfort in a hot, congested attic—the location designated for the new air handlers. THE SOLUTION The team used small fan coil units to tempo- rarily cool vital areas of the museum and the attic space. To avoid any possible damage to museum displays, the four new air handler units were lifted by crane to the roof where workers brought them into the attic. In addition, the team included variable air volume capabil- ity and robust filtration to the HVAC system. THE RESULTS The museum stayed open during the entire HVAC installation. Museum displays were protected and staff and visitors now enjoy a consistent, comfortable environment.
