MASS

DENSITY

For test purposes you’ll

need to know:

• The concepts presented in the presentation.

• The vocabulary words in this presentation

• The math formulas in this presentation

Write in the journal section of

your binder:

• What is the difference between

MASS and WEIGHT? Give

examples.

• Can a melted block of ice

measuring

12.5 cm³ X 15.8 cm³ X 13.6 cm³

fit into a 2500 cm³ container?

EXPLAIN.

Can a melted block of ice measuring

12.5 cm³ X 15.8 cm³ X 13.6 cm³

fit into a 2500 cm³ container? EXPLAIN.

• NO

• EXPLAIN: The volume of the melted ice (water) is 2686 cm³. The container is 2500 cm³. 186cm³ will overflow.

What tools will we use to

measure MATTER?

ALL DATA MUST BE:

• NEAT AND ORGANIZED

• ACCURATE

• HAVE THE CORRECT

UNITS OF MEASURE

What is matter?• Has mass

• Takes up space

• Sometimes cannot be seen

• Can be a solid, liquid, gas or plasma

• Doesn’t have to maintain its shape and or size.

What is NOT matter?

• Sound

• Light

• Heat

• Motion

• Electricity

What is WEIGHT?

Weight is the amount of gravitation pull on an object.

The Law of Universal Gravitation

• The Gravitational Force increases as the mass of the object increases.

• The Gravitational force decreases as distance between the objects increase.

What do scientist use to

measure weight?

SPRING SCALE measures weight

NEWTONSSTANDARD

What is MASS?

• Describes the amount of matter in an object

MASS vs. WEIGHT

• While mass is the amount of matter in an object, weight is the gravitational pull on the object.

Why do scientists use MASS instead of WEIGHT performing experiments?

WEIGHT changes MASS does not. MASS will not change

unless the amount of matter changes

The Gravitational Force increases as the mass of the object

increases.

Closer to the center,

the more you will

weigh

Further from the

center, the less you

will weigh

How much

matter is in Bruce?

How much does Bruce

weigh?

Why does Buzz weigh less on the moon than he does on

Earth?

The Moon is 1/6 the size of Earth

Does weight change with location?

If you weighed 100 pounds on earth, you would weigh…

Mercury38 lb.

Moon16.5 lb.

Mars38 lb.

Jupiter236 lb.

Saturn91 lb.

Mars has ⅓ the mass of Earth. If the Phoenix Lander has a weight of 750 pounds and a mass of 330 kg on Earth, what would be its mass and weight on Mars?

How are MASS and WEIGHT measured?

•MASS is measured with a triple beam balance or double pan balance

•WEIGHT is measured with spring scale

DOUBLE PAN BALANCE

How is the amount of space occupied by matter measured?

• VOLUME is the amount of space that an object takes up or occupies.

No, two or more, objects can share the same VOLUME

How can VOLUME be determined in a regular shaped object?

Length X Width X Height = VOLUME

LengthWidth

Height

How can VOLUME be determined in a cylinder shaped object?

Area of a Circle

Height

How can VOLUME be determined in an irregular shaped object?

How do you measure the VOLUME of a regular shaped object?

RULER

How do you measure the VOLUME of a irregular shaped object?

GRADUATED CYLINDER

What is Density?

DENSITY is a property of all

matter.

DENSITY is the ratio of MASS

and VOLUME

• No matter the size or shape of

an object, DENSITY will ALWAYS

remain the same.

• Cannot be measured directly

• Expressed as MASS/VOLUME ³

DENSITY:

3cm

5cm 2cm

30 cm³ Block

DENSITY: What do we want to

know?

How much MASS is in

1 cm of this block

If the entire block has a

mass of 30g, then

30g/30cm³ = 1g/cm³
