In her third attempt to make the Olympics, former Miami Hurricane star and Orlando, Fla., native Brittany Viola won the women’s 10-meter platform in the U.S. Olympic Trials at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center on Sunday.

Viola entered Sunday’s finals in first place after scoring 734.30 points on her two 10-meter lists earlier in the week. In the preliminaries, she scored no lower than 72 points on any dive, including a front 3 ½ pike and an armstand double back somersault with 1 ½ twists that both went for more than 80 points. In semifinals, she opened up with a 10 on her front 3 ½ pike for 82.50 points and followed with 88 points on her armstand.

Viola dominated Sunday’s final round, taking the 10-me-ter by close to 60 points ahead of Katie Bell, who cap-tured the other roster spot for the event. Viola finished with an impressive final score of 1081.50.

Viola scored 86.40 on her second-round dive, an arm-stand back dive from the platform with 2 somersaults and 1 1/2 twists. She scored 80.00 on her final dive, one that clinched the 10-meter title.

After finishing in second place during the 2004 trials and fourth in the 2008 trials, Viola successfully quali-fied for her first-ever Olympics on Sunday. One of the most decorated divers in UM history, she captured two NCAA championships and numerous Atlantic Coast Con-ference championships during a stellar career in orange and green. For her outstanding performance over the past week, she’ll trade in those colors for the chance to don red, white and blue this summer in London.

Junior Samantha Williams of the University of Miami recorded a 13.34 meter mark in her fifth attempt in the triple jump to earn All-America status on Saturday at the NCAA Track & Field Championships on the cam-pus of Drake University. Williams becomes the second Hurricane to earn national honors this weekend, as sophomore Thandi Stewart merited the standing in the 400 meter hurdles on Friday.

“I am very proud of Sam,” said associate head coach Calvin Robinson, who is in his fourth season working as Miami’s jumps and multi-events coach. “After a rough start, she stepped up in a very competitive field and showed that she can compete at this level. She has worked hard throughout the season and deserves this honor very much.”

Williams qualified for the Championships after registering the third-best performance in the triple jump in school history (13.43m) at the NCAA East Region Preliminaries on May 26. She notched a 13.10m in her third attempt on Saturday to make it to the finals, rendering a mark of 13.34m to finish in seventh overall.

The USA Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore., fall next on the Hurricanes’ schedule, ranging from June 22-30. Director of Track & Field and Head Coach Amy Deem will serve as the women’s head coach for Team USA’s track and field squad at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England.

University of Miami alum Lauryn Williams finished sixth in the finals of the women’s 100m dash with a time of 11.18 at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials on the campus of the University of Oregon Saturday. The placing put the sprinter into consideration for the 4x100 relay team at this summer’s Olympic Games in London that will be selected at a later date.

Williams registered a mark of 11.15 in the semifinals earlier in the day, third in heat two, to qualify for the finals in front of a record crowd of 21,795 at Hayward Field. She was the top American performer in this event in the past two Olympics.

“I of course came to make the team but have no regrets on my perfor-mance,” said Williams following the competition. “I have been blessed to do the 100 two times [at the Olympic Games] and maybe this time God has something different in store for me. The 200 is just a few days away so we will see what happens. I am looking forward to my chance at re-demption.”

The preliminaries of the 200m dash will be held on June 28 at 9:45 p.m. (EST).

Four other current and former Hurricanes will compete at the Trials. Rising junior Thandi Stewart and alums Ti’erra Brown and Dominique Darden will run in the 400m hurdles preliminaries on June 28 at 9:45 p.m. (EST). Recent graduate Devon Hill will participate in the 110m hurdles prelimi-naries on June 29 at 7:05 p.m. (EST).

Last week, five University of Miami teams earned NCAA Public Recog-nition Awards for Academic Prog-ress Rate scores that were among the top 10 percent in their sport nationally.

Today the NCAA announced the full APR scores for every institu-tion and the University of Miami was once again among the most accomplished programs across the board.

APR Accomplishments+ UM, Northwestern and Duke are the only three BCS schools to re-cord an APR score of 980 or better in football, men’s basketball and baseball.

+ The men’s basketball team re-corded a score of 980, which is the 15th-best nationally among BCS conference schools and sec-ond to only Duke in the ACC.

+ The baseball program earned a perfect score of 1,000, which is a feat that only nine institutions ac-complished.

+ In football, UM posted a record 980 score and is tied for 10th na-tionally with the Air Force Acad-emy.

+ Since 2004-05, men’s basket-ball, football and baseball have increased their APR scores every year. Men’s basketball began at 929 in 2004-05 and is now at 980. Football began at 956 sev-en years ago and is now at 980. Baseball was at 929 in 2004-05 and had a perfect score of 1,000 this year.

+ Men’s diving, women’s cross country and women’s golf joined the baseball team with perfect scores of 1,000.

+ Ten of Miami’s 18 programs scored 980 or better out of a pos-sible 1,000 points. Thirteen teams beat the national average.

+ Nine UM teams - baseball, men’s basketball, football, men’s diving, men’s tennis, men’s indoor track and field, women’s cross country, women’s golf and volleyball - have

a 70th percentile or higher na-tional rank within their respective sports.

+ In 2014-15, the NCAA will be-gin imposing penalties for teams that score below 930 in APR. All of UM’s teams are already well above that mark.

Five University of Miami teams were publicly hon-ored for being among the top 10 percent in Aca-demic Progress Rates (APR), as announced by the NCAA earlier today.

Football, baseball, women’s cross country, wom-en’s golf and men’s diving were recognized with APR Public Recognition Awards. It marks the third straight year that Miami football has been recog-nized for finishing among the top 10 percent. Base-ball and women’s golf were both honored for the second consecutive season.

“The collective effort of the student-athletes on the baseball, football, women’s cross country, women’s golf and men’s diving teams have raised the bar at the University of Miami,” said Director of Athletics Shawn Eichorst. “We join our coaches and academic support staff in celebrating the aca-

demic achievement of these Miami Hurricanes, which has established a new high of five APR Public Rec-ognition Awards. This success starts with dedication and perseverance by our student-athletes, who are able to balance the many pressures of college and still achieve academic success at a higher rate than the majority of their peers.”

Each year the NCAA honors select Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I APR. This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport. This year’s release will again include recognition in the sport of football by subdivision (i.e., Football Bowl Subdivision and Football Championship Subdivision).

“It is with great appreciation that we accept this honor from the NCAA and we applaud not only our illustri-ous student-athletes, but the faculty, academic advisors and coaching staff for fostering an environment that cultivates personal, academic and athletic excellence,” said David Wyman, Associate AD for Academic Services.

monroe represents miami at usa Junior trials Freshman competes in discus throw at national level

Freshman Amber Monroe of the University of Miami competed at the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday on the campus of Indiana University, making three attempts in the women’s dis-cus throw. The meet brought together some of the best young talent in the country with a berth to the IAAF World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain on the line.

Monroe ended her rookie season with three fouls in the discus throw, but wraps of the year with several highlights. She qualified for the NCAA Championships last week in the event and took home first place at the highly-regarded Penn Relays in April with a career-best mark of 168’ 9”/51.67m.

“It was a great learning experience to be able to compete at a national event today,” said Monroe. “I wish I would have had better aim with my throws, but I feel good about my freshman season as a whole. I just have to continue to improve and work to get better moving forward.”
