New Yorkers also faced their second day of gasoline rationing under a system introduced in New Jersey lastweek, in which cars with odd- and even-numbered license plates can fill up only on alternate days.

It's been terrible, Diane Uhlfelder, a former New York City police officer at the protest in Hicksville, told aReuters reporter.

The kids have been out of school for more than a week,' Uhlfelder said. 'All the food is totally ruined, it'sexpensive eating out every day, so most of the time it's McDonald's, but the cold is the worst. It's been hell.

Sandy battered the East Coast on October 29, killing at least 120 people and causing an estimated $50 billionin damage.

The storm destroyed homes around New York City and along along the New Jersey Shore, cut off electricityfor millions of people and knocked out much of the public transportation system.

Newly re-elected President Barack Obama is set to visit some of the hard-hit areas of New York City onThursday. Obama put off an earlier visit at the request of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who feared it could hinderrelief efforts and put an additional strain on resources, such as available police officers.

Word had spread Friday night that a tanker truck carrying 8,000 gallons of free gasoline was to arrive around10am.

The fuel was delivered under the auspices of the Fuel Relief Fund and apparently funded by an anonymousdonor.

The guy didn't want his name used, but he wanted to get gas to these people, said a New York Police

Department captain, who declined to give his name because he was not authorized to speak to the media.Pretty decent thing to do, he said. These people need it bad.

On Saturday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo extended the deadline to February for New Yorkers who losttheir income due to the storm to apply for federal assistance.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who toured the Jersey Shore on Friday, said many popular vacationspots will not be fully rebuilt by next summer.

This is our Katrina, he declared, referring to the hurricane that washed out New Orleans in 2005.

Destruction: Much of the Jersey Shore has been ravaged by the unprecedented storm

Homeowners were able to return to an 18-mile (30-km) barrier island off New Jersey's Atlantic coast onSaturday, giving some of them their first view of the devastation wrought by Sandy.

Long Beach Island, an enclave of mostly affluent vacation homes, took a direct hit, with some homes washedfull of sand and seawater and others destroyed.

The island, with about 10,000 year-round residents and perhaps 10 times that number in the summer, hasbeen closed to residents except for brief visits to retrieve belongings.

There were 289,239 customers without power on Saturday in the states struck by Sandy, a drop of 144,901from Friday, the U.S. Energy Department said. At the peak 8.5 million were without power.

These people had the best in life, and now, they've become a bunch of crybabies. I don't know what the problem is, or who is toblame, but please stop whining, pull up your bootstraps, and behave like civilized people.

Plenty of wood around - light some fire to keep warm and organise yourselves into groups. Get individuals organised and givepeople responsibility for finding food, organising toilet facilities, keeping the fires going etc. Build community spirit. I was without anypower for 8 days when my kids were little - it was tough as the shops had no food but it was a learning curve - it makes you realisehow fragile our modern society is as we are so reliant on technology. I now do survival training as I want to be able to fend for myselfin the event of disaster.

Hard for the utilities ... there's overhead and underground lines etc. But no problem ... remember FEMA will be right on top of that, and Obama will cut through all that red tape ... and not a peep from liberal media who were screaming at Bush after Katrina ... easyto see they are not reporters. Watch CNN, CBS, ABC etc. and you won't hear one word about FEMA, or Obama's lack of response. All you hear about is the bad utility companies. Where's this government we send our taxes to?

I am sorry that the northern east coast is experiencing these hardships. However, it is appropriate that the same people who votedfor the big-government nanny state are now facing the fallacy of their decision. Natural disasters are actually a valid area for

government to flex its muscle, but look at how inept they are. This is the problem. When you give government more and more to doyou end up with a government that can't do much of anything very well. This is a case study in proving that the media in this countryis totally in the bag for the left. Is there anyone out there willing to try to make the case that had this occurred during a Republicanadministration the media would not be screaming from the rooftops 24/7? If they don't get this lined out soon they are going toexperience even greater damage. If it gets really cold the pipes in those highrises and houses will begin to freeze and burst. Theyhad better get their act together fast. Time is running out

Why weren't these people better prepared for the storm? They had a week's notice and still it seems like nobody stocked up on

water, food, etc. The general rule of them is to always have two weeks of supplies on hand when faced with a storm of thismagnitude. I guess The Great Nanny State has turned people into government zombies - no longer able to think or act for do forthemselves. Where is The Communist now? Or Mayor Doomberg? He wouldn't even allow The National Guard in NY because theycarry weapons. Now I'm willing to bet than his multiple bodyguards carry weapons. Liberal elitists once again. You voted for this NY.
