Sunday, October 28, is Music and Worship Arts Dedication at FUMC, Pensacola. This is a day to celebrate and dedicate all who serve through music and worship arts to help lead the congregation in worship. Most of our choir will be combined at the 8:00 and 11:00am Main Sanctuary services along with the Perdido Brass. This will be the 25th dedication that Heidi and I have had the privilege to share with you. Each year I think it will be impossible to be more appreciative of, or more blessed by, the many volunteers involved in our music program. And yet every year I AM moved “to a more profound Alleluia” in worship because of the members of our congregation who work so hard to lead us in worship.

Did you know that you are a member of a choir at FUMC, Pensacola? The congregation is the primary choir, so it is you who are chiefly responsible for worshipping God through music, or through a joyful noise if you think you can’t sing. I hope you take this responsibility and this gift seriously!

Bach said, “The aim and final reason for all music should be nothing else but the glory of God and the refreshment of the spirit.” Heidi and I cannot thank all of you enough for the hard work and generous spirit that you bring to the work of glorifying God.

Bach also signed his music manuscripts with “Soli Deo gloria” which is Latin for “solely to God’s glory.” I hope you know that we never think of the music that we provide as a performance for our own glory. We try to always be mindful that we are offering our talents to God in hopes that those who are present will be brought closer into the presence of God in worship. That’s why it’s okay to sing out from your pew – you’re not performing, you’re giving your voice to God as an offering. “Let us continually offer a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name.” (Hebrews 13:15)

I hope you will join us on October 28 as we dedicate those involved in worship arts and ourselves to another year of singing God’s praises!

Rev. Dr. Rick Branch

Hurricane Michael has left a wave of devastation across the Panhandle of Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and the Carolinas. Those in our area who stayed through the storm and those now returning to the devastation are in great need. The conference has asked us to help in four ways; they are our "Calls to Action."

CONFERENCE-WIDE CALLS TO ACTION

1) PRAYThe first thing each of us can do is pray for our neighbors in need. If you want to send in a prayer request, email it to [email protected]. Please type “Prayer Request” in the subject line.

2) DONATEThe quickest way you can personally help those in need is through monetary donations. You can write a check out to First United Methodist Church and write Hurricane Michael Relief on the memo line. You can also give online through the link below. Once you are on the donation page, scroll down to the section titled “Other.” Type your gift amount in the first space and make sure you type Hurricane Michael Relief in the second space. Then click “Continue to Secure Payment Form” at the bottom of the page. Gift cards to gas stations and "big box" stores (Target, Wal-Mart, Lowes, Home Depot, etc.) are also accepted. Thank you for your gifts.

3) VOLUNTEERIn the coming days we will be putting together teams to take over to the affected areas to hand out food and water, assist in the cleanup, or do whatever else might be needed. If you would like to be a part of these teams, email the Rev. Brandon Bures at [email protected]. In the email include your name(s), a phone number, and the days that you can be available. Please type “Hurricane Recovery Teams” in the subject line of the email.

4) PUT TOGETHER UMCOR KITSCompleted UMCOR cleaning and hygiene kits will be needed in the coming days. For the items needed in each bucket and instructions on packing the bucket, visit umcor.org/UMCOR/Relief-Supplies. Please only collect the items listed on the card. Please follow the packing directions UMCOR has provided.

ADDITIONAL NEEDSIn addition to the four "Calls to Action" from the conference, First Church has the following needs.

HOUSINGFirst Church is asking those in our congregation who have extra rooms to open up their homes to those in need and host a family or person that has been displaced because of the storm. If you would be interested in participating please contact the Front Office (432.1434).

DONATION ITEMSWe are collecting these items to take over on our trips to the devastated area. If you are able to donate any of these items, please drop them off at the garages between 8:30am and 4:30pm Monday through Thursday. The garages are located on Guillemard St. across from the gym.

MUSIC & WORSHIP ARTSDEDICATION

For over 25 years, we have set aside a Sunday to celebrate all those who participate in the Choir and Worship Arts groups of our church. Music and Worship Arts Dedication Sunday is a time where all the choirs of First Church join together to sing an anthem. The Choirs have a total of over 300 members, and include the Kindergarten & 1st Grade Choir, 2nd – 4th Grade Choir, Club 56 Choir, Mid High Choir, Senior High Choir, and Handbell Choir. The role of the choir is to encourage the congregation to sing out and share scripture or sacred text in a way that the congregation can understand them. While the organized choir’s role is important, the primary choir is always the congregation.

We hope you join us on October 28, at the 8:00am and 11:00am Main Sanctuary Services to support Music and Worship Arts Dedication Sunday!
