THOUSANDS EVACUATED AFTER HURRICANE MARIA STRIKES!

Puerto Rican officials are desperately trying to evacuate thousands of residents as the flood waters from a nearby Puerto Rican dam escape and flood the area downstream. Nearly 40 centimeters of rain has fallen on the mountains surrounding the Guajajara Dam since the Category 4 storm crossed the island, swelling the reservoir behind it. Authorities are now trying to evacuate 70,000 people who live downstream, with buses sent to move people away.

The dam was built in 1928, and currently contains a man-made lake which covers around 5 square miles. A breach was spotted by a engineer around 9:00 am, in which lead to official’s warned about an almost total failure of the dam.

"There's no clue as to how long or how this can evolve," said Anthony Reynes, a meteorologist with the US National Weather Service. "We really don't know how long it would take for this failure to become a full break of the dam." Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rossello told reporters in the capital, "We haven't seen the extent of the damage."

Government spokesman Carlos Bermudez said that officials still had not had communication with 40 of the 78 municipalities on the island, days after Maria toppled power lines and sent floodwaters cascading through city streets.

That is because 1,360 of the island's 1,600 mobile phone towers had been downed, and 85 per cent of above-ground and underground phone and internet cables had been knocked out. Power had also been cut across the territory which has 3.4 million residents. Source: ABC news

NORTH KOREA ACCUSES USA FOR DELCARING WAR!

US President Donald Trump has declared war on North Korea, Pyongyang says, adding that it reserves the right to take countermeasures, including shooting down US bombers even if they are not in its air space. "The whole world should clearly remember it was the US who first declared war on our country," Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho told reporters in New York.

"Since the United States declared war on our country, we will have every right to make countermeasures, including the right to shoot down United States strategic bombers even when they are not inside the airspace border of our country.

"The question of who won't be around much longer will be answered then," Mr Ri added in a direct reference to a tweet by Mr Trump on Saturday. In response, the Pentagon said it would be providing Mr Trump with "options" on how to deal with Pyongyang.

"If North Korea does not stop their provocative actions, you know, we will make sure that we provide options to the President to deal with North Korea," Pentagon spokesman Colonel Robert Manning said.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Saunders later denied the accusation that Mr Trump had declared war on North Korea, and called the suggestion "absurd".

The increasingly heated rhetoric between Mr Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is raising fears of a risk of a miscalculation by one side or the other that could have massive repercussions.

NASA CHIEF ANNOUNCES PLANS ON CRATING AUSTRALIAN SPACE AGENCY

Charles Bolden, the recently retired head of NASA, says he was surprised it took Australia this long to announce a national space agency.

It was during Mr Bolden's first trip to Australia visiting the Deep Space Network tracking station in Canberra that he realized Australia did not have one. "My question at the time was why not?" he said.

Mr Bolden said he believed governments had a critical role to play in "blazing the trail" and laying out the path for private industry and entrepreneurs to follow. While attending the Adelaide conference this week Mr Bolden received the International Astronautical Federation's Award for distinguished service.

As an astronaut with 680 hours in space, Mr Bolden was appointed by former president Barack Obama to lead NASA in 2009. He led the agency in developing the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft — designed to take humans to Mars.

CEO OF EQUIFAX RICHARD SMITH STEPS DOWN AFTER SCANDAL

The CEO of credit reporting agency Equifax has stepped down in the wake of the hacking scandal that has engulfed his company. Three weeks ago, Equifax publicly admitted a disastrous hack to its computer system exposed the sensitive personal information of 143 million Americans. The breach exploited a software flaw which led to the exposure of Social Security numbers, birthdates and other personal data that provide the keys to identify theft.

Richard Smith, who had been Equifax's chief since 2005, has stepped down as CEO and will also leave the chairman post. His departure follows those of two other high-ranking executives since the hack.

Equifax called Mr Smith's move a retirement, but he will not receive his annual bonus and other potential retirement-related benefits until the company's board concludes an independent review of the data breach. Even if the review does find Mr Smith at fault, he could walk away with a retirement package of at least $23.4 million, along with the value of the stock and options he was paid out over his 12-year tenure.

There is a possibility the board could "claw back" any cash or stock bonuses he may have received, but corporations typically set high thresholds for that type of action. The 57-year-old executive, who made almost $19.05 million in salary, bonuses and stock last year, would also be able to stay on the company's health plan for life.

Paulino do Rigo Barros Jr, most recently president of the Asia Pacific region, has been named the interim CEO. Equifax said it will look both inside and outside the company for a permanent CEO.

MIND-READING TECHNOLOGY IS USEFUL — BUT IT SHOULDN'T BE USED TO FIGHT CRIME AND TERRORISM

There is growing interest in the potential for a technology known as brain fingerprinting to be used in the fight against crime and terrorism, but it's far from reliable.

Its use without consent violates human rights. And importantly, the technology (as it currently exists) can be tricked. Brain fingerprinting seeks to detect deception by essentially reading thoughts.

It works by using electroencephalography (EEG) to read the electrical activity of the brain, with the aim of trying to identify a phenomenon known as the P300 response. The P300 response is a noticeable spike in the brain's electrical activity, which usually occurs within one-third of a second of being shown a familiar stimulus.

The idea is that our subconscious brain has an uncontrollable and measurable response to familiar stimuli that the machine can register. Imagine, for example, that a particular knife was used in a murder, and police show an image of it to their lead suspect who denies the crime.

ADELAIDE, RICHMOND TO MAKE AFL GRAND FINAL HISTORY, WITH NO PLAYERS HAVING PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE

When Richmond and Adelaide players run out on the MCG on Saturday afternoon, they will be making history.

For 118 years of VFL/AFL football there has been a constant thread linking each grand finale to the year before. That thread will be broken tomorrow, with not a single player of the 44 who take the field for the Crows and Tigers having played in a grand final previously.

The only other time that has happened was in the first-ever VFL grand finale of 1898, where by definition no-one had previous experience.

The key here is the fact Adelaide is playing in its first grand final in 19 years, while Richmond last made the big game in 1982.In many years during the century-plus history of the league, there were dynasties to be maintained or challenged, like the Collingwood side of the 1920s, the Melbourne side of the 1950s and 1960s, the Hawthorn, Essendon and Carlton sides of the 1980s — not to mention the Tigers' last grand final win in 1980 and last experience in 1982.
