STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

“They have quickly turned aside from the way which I commanded them. They have made for themselves a molten calf, and have worshiped it….”

Exodus 32:8 The days of worshiping idols are not as far away as we might think. Today’s idols are houses, cars, clothes, technology, power, and wealth.

GIVE BY TEXT! You can now make a contribution to IHM with a quick text message! Simply send a text to 404-948-4757. In the message just indicate the amount you would like to contribute. For future giving, simply send a text with the amount you wish to give, and it will process automatically!

OUR MINISTRY FAIR IS NEXT WEEKEND! This fair is the annual showcase of all of our parish’s many ministries and organizations. Plan now to stay a few minutes after Mass that weekend to share some food, drink and camaraderie, and begin praying about how you might be called to serve.

STEWARDSHIP IS BASED on the spiritual principles of the Old Testament and on the teachings of Jesus. The traditional biblical concept of tithing is a way of thanking God for all the blessings he has given us by returning to him a portion or our Time, Talent and Treasure. Stewardship changes the spiritual lives of people who practice it and transforms our parish as a whole.

COMMITMENT MATERIALS have been mailed to all registered parishioners from Monsignor Al. If you did not receive materials at home, please come by the church office or visit www.ihmatlanta.org and register in the parish today! Extra commitment materials are available in the church narthex.

COMMITMENT WEEKEND IS OCTOBER 5 & 6, when we will prayerfully return our Time, Talent & Treasure commitments during the offertory of the Mass. Thank you for your good stewardship of IHM!

COME MEET THE FOCOLARE October 1 The Focolare Movement is an approved lay movement in the Catholic Church founded in 1943 by Chiara Lubich in Italy and has since spread to every corner of the globe. We work for unity by living the Gospel, being especially guided by Jesus’ priestly prayer “May they all be one” (Jn 17:21). Please come and join us on Tuesday, October 1, 7-8:30 p.m. in the Lower Level for a brief presentation of the Focolare Movement followed by testimonials and questions and an-swers. Spanish translation will be available. For more infor-mation please go to www.focolare.org/en.

RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS NEEDED Our rectory resident, Father Jean Ikanga, SVD, and other researchers at Emory University, are conducting a study to understand the effects of ethnic background on cognitive test performance in order to design fairer tests for diverse popu-lations. Study participation requires completing cognitive and memory tests for 2 hours; there is monetary compensa-tion available for your time. Eligible participants must be 18-35 and identify as white, Caucasian or European American. (Other ethnic group quotas have already been met.) If you are interested in participating, please call Mary Anne Riley at 404-712-5674 and leave a message for the research team. They will call you back to schedule your participation.

2019 AIDS WALK AND 5K RUN September 29 Team IHM invites you to walk/run with us virtually or in person to demonstrate our parish’s solidarity and that of the universal Church with persons living with HIV/AIDS and those at risk of acquiring this disease. Georgia and the southeast are a major epicenter of the problem. Effective prevention and treatment are possible, but need financial support. Visit the table in the narthex this weekend, or go to www.aidswalkatlanta.com and search for Immaculate Heart of Mary to donate or to register as a walker/runner. For more information, please contact co-captains Bob Briggs at [email protected] or Kathy Parker at [email protected].

ALTAR SERVER TRAINING September 17 or 23 Training sessions for young people in the 4th grade and old-er who would like to serve at God’s altar will be Tuesday, September 17, or Monday, September 23, 6:30-8:30 p.m., beginning in the church narthex. For more information, con-tact Brice Boyle at [email protected]. At least one parent must attend the first 15 minutes of the training.

OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP CANCER HOME Since 1939, the Hawthorne Dominican Sisters have operated the home in downtown Atlanta, dedicated to the care of ter-minally ill cancer patients who cannot afford to pay. The sisters depend on financial support from a generous commu-nity. The Cancer Home Auxiliary has raffle tickets for sale in the narthex this weekend after all masses. Your purchase will help the sisters continue their holy work. Cash or checks made out to O.L.P.H. AUX are welcome.

CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES FAIR TRADE SALE October 5-6

In our world today, handcraft produc-tion is the second largest form of em-ployment behind agriculture. The fair trade mission is dedicated not only to paying artisans fair wages and ensuring

safe working conditions, but to creating opportunity for indi-viduals, communities, and environments to thrive and grow. More than a business philosophy, fair trade is the develop-ment of relationships built on respect, honesty, freedom, and dignity. Shop the annual CRS Fair Trade Sale at IHM on Saturday and Sunday, October 5 and 6 after all the Masses. You will find meaningful and beautiful handcrafted gifts from around the world. www.serrv.org/crs

FIRST EUCHARIST FOR CHILDREN 2019-2020 Mark your calendars! Our first meeting for parents of First Communion candidates will take place on September 30 at 6:30 p.m. in the church. Eligible students will receive their First Eucharist during regular Mass times on the weekend of May 2-3, 2020. Preparation will take place throughout the school year, including the stu-dent’s first celebration of the Sacrament of Penance, which will occur at special penance services in November.

Sundays, 10:15-11:15 a.m. IHM School Library

Regular adult faith formation offerings resumed on September 8. Join us every Sunday for this hour of

prayer and fellowship.

Q Why do people come to inquire about being initiated? What brings them to us?

A The Holy Spirit leads people to us in many ways. Perhaps they wish to worship with their spouse, who is an active Catholic, or they are preparing to marry a Catholic. Perhaps they have been drawn by the Church’s teachings or its service in the world. A Catholic relative or friend may have set an inspiring example. Parents whose children attend Catholic schools and are preparing for sacrament may feel encouraged to participate in Catholic life with them, a crisis or turning point in life (in one’s health, family, or workplace) may prompt at desire to seek God. Significant public events, such as war, disaster, a Church celebration, or the encouraging words of great Church leader like Pope Francis, may kindle a spiritual awakening.

For more information about the process of Christian Initiation at IHM, contact

Drew Denton in the parish office.
